Before assembling anything, confirm that your exact Threadripper CPU appears on your TRX50 motherboard’s CPU support list and note the minimum BIOS version it requires. TRX50 uses the sTR5 socket, but a platform-level match does not guarantee that every CPU works with every board or BIOS revision. For socket retention, follow the instructions and use the tool supplied with the processor alongside the manual for your exact motherboard; do not guess at a screw sequence or torque value.

Check CPU, motherboard, BIOS, and memory compatibility

Write down the processor model, motherboard model and revision, and the installed BIOS version. Then check the manufacturer’s CPU support list for that exact combination and its minimum BIOS requirement. AMD lists Threadripper 7000 and 9000 series CPUs for TRX50, as well as Threadripper PRO 9000 WX, but each board maker maintains its own model-specific support list. See AMD’s Threadripper platform information and the support page for your particular board.

TRX50 uses the sTR5 socket. Do not apply installation instructions for AM4, AM5, or another Threadripper socket to this platform. Check the motherboard manual and memory QVL for supported module type, capacity, population, and speeds before buying or installing memory.

Confirm the RAM type and population plan

TRX50 is a four-channel memory platform. For example, AMD specifies the Ryzen Threadripper 7960X for DDR5 RDIMM, four memory channels, and up to 5200 MT/s; the processor’s actual operating memory speed depends on configuration. ASRock’s TRX50 WS specifications also list DDR5 ECC Registered memory. These are vendor specifications, not independent performance measurements. Use your board’s own memory QVL and slot-population diagram: there is no safe universal DIMM order for all TRX50 boards, and WRX90’s eight-channel population guidance does not apply.

AMD lists up to 80 PCIe 5.0 lanes and four-channel memory for TRX50. WRX90 is a different workstation platform, specified by AMD for eight memory channels and up to 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes, with additional PRO manageability and security features. Choose and configure the platform against your exact CPU support, memory, expansion, and workload requirements rather than assuming one is universally better. See AMD’s STR5 platform specifications.

Prepare a safe work area

  • Shut down the system and switch off and disconnect the PSU before opening the case. AMD warns that installing internal components while powered can damage hardware.
  • Use an ESD mat or a properly fitted, grounded wrist strap connected to a genuine grounded, unpainted metal point. Remove jewelry and loose items. Electrostatic discharge can cause permanent damage.
  • Set out the processor’s supplied socket tool, the motherboard manual, the cooler and its mounting instructions, and the memory modules. Do not proceed with socket retention if the required tool or exact procedure is missing.

AMD’s handling guidance is direct: “The processor should never be forced into the socket.” Read AMD Processor Handling Guidance (CPU-100) before handling the CPU.

Install the CPU using the supplied tool and exact instructions

  1. Consult the Threadripper processor’s included installation instructions and your motherboard’s manual for the socket-specific procedure. Identify the keyed socket pattern and the CPU carrier’s alignment features before placing the processor.
  2. Use the supplied Threadripper socket tool as directed by those instructions. Keep the processor aligned with the keys and carrier as you lower it into place; it should fit without force. If it does not, stop and check orientation and alignment.
  3. Complete socket retention only in the order and manner documented for your exact CPU and motherboard. AMD’s accessible dedicated Threadripper installation page does not provide a universal torque value or a procedure that can safely be generalized across boards. Do not substitute a remembered value or a sequence from a different socket generation.

If the supplied instructions or motherboard manual are unavailable, pause and obtain them from AMD or the board manufacturer before closing the socket. This is not a step to improvise.

Install a compatible cooler before powering on

A correctly installed thermal solution is required before the processor is powered on. Verify that the cooler is explicitly compatible with your exact sTR5 processor and board, that its mounting system follows the cooler maker’s instructions, and that its heat-dissipation capability meets or exceeds the processor’s power consumption. Apply thermal interface material uniformly as directed, and check that the cooler sits level with proper contact.

  • AMD socket sTR5 supports up to 96-core CPUs: Ready for AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7000 WX-Series Processors and AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series Processors.
  • CPU and memory overclocking: Support for up to 1TB ECC R-DIMM DDR5 memory modules (1DPC)
  • Robust power and thermal design: 36 power stages with two 8-pin power connectors for the CPU, massive VRM cooling, chipset and M.2 heatsinks, and M.2 thermal pad.
  • Ultrafast connectivity: three PCIe 5.0 x16 slots, WiFi 7, 10 Gb & 2.5 Gb LAN ports, three M.2 slots, front and rear USB 20Gbps Type-C and SlimSAS NVMe support.
  • Server-grade IPMI remote management: hardware and software support for ASUS IPMI expansion cards, plus ASUS Control Center Express software for real-time monitoring and management

As a model-specific example, AMD specifies the Ryzen Threadripper 7960X at 350 W default TDP and lists its boxed thermal solution as “Not Included.” That figure and cooler status apply to the 7960X; do not assume they describe every Threadripper CPU. AMD’s cooling information lists solutions for Threadripper 7000 and 9000 and says those generations use the Asetek-compatible bracket included with the processor. Check AMD’s current Threadripper cooling compatibility information and the cooler maker’s mounting details. Bracket compatibility alone does not establish that every cooler covers the full heat spreader or supports overclocking; cooling performance and compatibility depend on the configuration and cooler model. See also AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper 7960X specifications and AMD’s thermal-interface guidance.

Install memory in the slots specified by your board

Install modules only in the slots and order shown in your motherboard’s manual, and use modules validated by its memory QVL. Confirm that the module type, capacity, and intended configuration are supported for your CPU and board. TRX50’s four-channel design is not a reason to copy a generic slot order: follow the board-specific diagram. AMD’s CPU-level figures for the 7960X—four memory channels and up to 5200 MT/s—are specifications for that model, and the operating speed depends on configuration.

First boot and conservative BIOS setup

  1. Power on and enter UEFI using the key documented for your motherboard. On the ASRock TRX50 BIOS guide referenced here, press F2 or Delete immediately after power-on; other manufacturers and models may use different keys.
  2. Confirm that the UEFI detects the processor and installed memory. Begin with default settings rather than changing multiple options at once.
  3. After confirming basic detection and stability, consult the manual and BIOS guide for any optional memory profile or tuning setting you want to use. ASRock describes Auto memory frequency as automatic detection and EXPO/XMP profiles as operation beyond standard specifications. Treat these profiles as optional overclocking, not as necessary installation steps.
  4. If the system fails to POST after a BIOS change, use the exact motherboard manual’s CMOS-clear instructions to restore defaults. Do not assume a universal key, menu label, or reset procedure applies to every board.

ASRock cautions that settings vary by board, CPU, and BIOS version, and that inadequate settings can cause instability or boot failure. Its guidance recommends keeping defaults unless changes are made with appropriate expertise. Read the ASRock BIOS setup guide for the referenced vendor-specific guidance, and use your own board’s documentation for its menus and recovery procedure.
