The reliable way to install satellite internet is to identify the exact terminal and provider rules first, test the proposed location for a complete line of sight, then fasten the dish to a rigid, weatherproof mount and finish alignment with the provider’s app or signal meter. A convenient spot that lets trees, roof edges, poles or chimneys enter the satellite’s view will produce interruptions no matter how carefully the hardware is tightened.

Starlink terminals are designed for app-led self-installation. HughesNet and Viasat generally use fixed geostationary dishes and professional installation. The procedures overlap—clear sky, a plumb and rigid mast, protected cabling and a final service test—but their sky geometry, alignment controls and installation rules are not interchangeable.

Start by identifying the terminal and installation rules

Before choosing a ladder, drill bit or mount, record the provider, terminal generation, supplied stand or bracket, cable length and whether the service permits customer installation. A motorized, electronically aligned terminal has different limits from a traditional dish that must be pointed at a geostationary satellite. Do not apply one provider’s cable, alignment or mounting instructions to another provider’s equipment.

Service type Typical alignment method What the provider guidance emphasizes Who normally installs it
Starlink Use the Starlink app’s obstruction scan and alignment prompt; the terminal may rotate itself. A complete sky view is essential. The Standard Install Guide illustrates about a 110° sky window beginning around 20° above the horizon; the Performance guidance describes visibility from roughly 20° elevation through 360° of azimuth. Customer self-installation is the normal design, with additional mounts available when the supplied stand cannot clear obstructions.
HughesNet Set a plumb mast, then use the installer’s documented azimuth, elevation, skew and signal diagnostics. Use a clear southern-sky line of sight, keep the outdoor antenna at least four feet off the ground, and stay away from power and other utility lines. Professional installation is required.
Viasat A certified technician sets the dish’s pointing angles and verifies the signal during activation. The dish must be on a secure roof, wall or pole location with an unobstructed path to the assigned satellite. Certified technician installation is the normal process.

These are planning distinctions, not substitutes for the instructions supplied with your particular hardware. Model revisions can change connectors, cable limits, grounding requirements and the way alignment is reported.

Survey the sky before drilling or clamping

Line of sight is the first reliability decision. Survey every candidate location with the terminal’s obstruction tool or the provider’s site-survey procedure before making a permanent hole. Check the entire required viewing envelope, not merely the direction in which the dish appears to point.

Starlink’s required clearance

Place the Starlink terminal temporarily at each possible location and open the Starlink app’s obstruction tool. The app shows whether trees, branches, roof ridges, chimneys, poles, tanks or neighboring buildings intrude into the view. Starlink’s documentation warns that “Objects that obstruct the connection between your Starlink and the satellite, such as a tree branch, pole, or roof, will cause service interruptions.” The illustrated planning envelope is approximately 110° of sky with the lower boundary about 20° above the horizon. Performance guidance describes a clear view from roughly 20° elevation through all azimuth directions and notes that objects above 20° can still cause occasional interruptions.

Treat those angles as the terminal’s documented planning envelope, not as a guarantee for every property. The app’s scan is the final check for your terminal, latitude and surroundings. If the scan shows obstructions, move the terminal or raise it with an approved roof, wall or pole mount; do not assume a stronger Wi-Fi signal or a faster plan will compensate for blocked sky.

Traditional geostationary dishes

HughesNet, Viasat and similar fixed systems are assigned a particular geostationary satellite. Their dishes normally need an unobstructed southern-sky path in the Northern Hemisphere, but the exact azimuth, elevation and polarization (skew) depend on the service, satellite assignment and installation address. A compass heading by itself is not enough: magnetic declination, local terrain and the mount’s position can put the dish off target.

Use the provider’s installer documentation or service diagnostics for the site-specific angles. A tree that is harmless at one elevation can block a lower satellite path at another, so inspect the whole line between the dish and the sky. If the site cannot provide that path without a tall mast or risky roof work, select another location or arrange a professional survey.

Choose a mount that will not move

Signal alignment is measured in small angular changes. A mast that flexes in wind or twists when the cable is pulled can turn a correctly peaked dish into an intermittent one. Select a mount that matches the terminal’s mast diameter, the roof or wall structure, local wind exposure and applicable building rules.

Ground or supplied stand

Use the supplied stand on level, stable ground only when it remains upright, cannot be tipped by wind or animals and still clears the required sky. A temporary placement is useful for the obstruction scan, but it is not automatically suitable for permanent service. Keep the stand away from locations where snow, runoff, vehicles or landscaping can bury or strike it.

Roof, wall and pole mounts

When ground level is obstructed, use the provider’s approved accessory or a compatible universal satellite-dish J-mount or galvanized mounting pole. Verify all of the following before purchase:

  • The mount accepts the terminal’s mast diameter and clamp style.
  • The roof, fascia, masonry or framing can carry the static and wind loads.
  • Fasteners are appropriate for the substrate and long enough to engage sound structure.
  • The pole and brackets have a wind rating suitable for the exposed location.
  • The mount leaves room to route the cable without a sharp bend or pinch.
  • Local rules permit the installation and require any particular grounding or penetration treatment.

Keep the mast perfectly plumb for a traditional dish. A leaning mast changes the relationship between the elevation scale and the actual sky angle, making the installer’s numbers unreliable. On a motorized terminal, follow the hardware instructions rather than forcing the mechanism to compensate for a crooked or unstable support.

Prepare tools and observe the safety boundary

Have the mount instructions, drill and bits suited to the structure, appropriate fasteners, a level, wrench set, cable clips, compatible exterior sealant, a grounding arrangement specified for the model, and a phone or tablet with the provider app. For fixed dishes, the provider’s signal meter or installer diagnostic is more useful than a generic compass.

  • Do not work near overhead power lines or other utility service lines. HughesNet specifically directs installers to keep the dish away from them.
  • Do not drill where hidden electrical, gas, water or communications services may run. Confirm their location before drilling.
  • Do not climb a wet, steep or fragile roof without proper fall protection and training.
  • Use a qualified installer when the mount needs structural reinforcement, a tall mast, difficult flashing or weatherproofing, or a provider-certified alignment.
  • Keep people below clear of tools and hardware, and follow the terminal’s electrical, grounding and surge-protection instructions.

If any step would put you within reach of a utility line or require unsafe roof access, stop. The cost of a professional installation is preferable to an electrical injury, a fall or a leaking structure.

Install the dish step by step

1. Test the exact location

  1. Place the terminal or temporary stand at the proposed position.
  2. Connect only the components required by the provider’s setup instructions.
  3. Run the Starlink obstruction and alignment tools, or complete the fixed-dish site survey using the provider’s documented satellite angles.
  4. Walk around the site and look for seasonal or moving obstructions: branches, leaves, flagpoles, cranes, vehicles and construction equipment.
  5. Mark the location that provides the clearest view with the least difficult and safest cable route.

Do this before drilling or clamping. Moving a mount after sealing a roof penetration creates more opportunities for leaks and structural damage.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

2. Secure the mount to sound structure

  1. Position the bracket or pole so the fasteners enter framing, a rated fascia or sound masonry—not just siding, thin sheathing or loose trim.
  2. Use the level to make the mast plumb. Check it in two perpendicular directions.
  3. Tighten fasteners evenly and confirm that the mount does not rock or rotate when moderate hand force is applied.
  4. For a roof installation, use the specified flashing or penetration method and seal compatible exterior surfaces without blocking designed drainage paths.
  5. Re-run the obstruction check after the terminal is on the final mount; the roof edge or bracket can block more sky than the temporary test position.

3. Install the terminal without stressing the cable

Seat the terminal fully in its mast or bracket and follow the orientation shown in the model’s instructions. Keep power-supply connectors downward or to the side so water cannot collect at the joint. Make a downward drip loop before the cable reaches the wall entry point, then secure the loop so wind cannot pull on the connector.

Starlink’s current support guidance says not to extend the dish cable beyond 25 m and specifies a minimum bend radius of 10 cm (4 in). Do not coil excess cable into a tight loop, crush it under a door or staple through its jacket. Keep connectors clean, fully seated and protected from standing water. Seal the building penetration with a compatible exterior sealant and maintain the enclosure’s specified drainage and grounding arrangements.

4. Power up and allow the equipment to initialize

Connect the dish, router and power supply in the order shown by the provider. Give the terminal time to boot, acquire satellites and report status; repeatedly unplugging it during startup can make diagnosis harder. Keep the router where its ventilation and weather limits are respected, and use a wired connection for the first service test when practical so Wi-Fi performance does not hide a dish problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Align a Starlink terminal

  1. Open the Starlink app while your phone is connected to the system’s local Wi-Fi.
  2. Follow the setup prompt until the app displays the alignment screen.
  3. If the app requests rotation, let the motorized terminal move itself. Do not force a motorized dish by hand.
  4. Use the app’s obstruction result to decide whether the current mount is high and clear enough. Occasional alerts mean the placement still needs improvement; do not dismiss them as a router fault.
  5. When the app reports a clear or acceptable view, leave the terminal operating and observe its connection status before closing the setup.

If a self-aligning terminal cannot complete setup, recheck the cable seating, power supply, mount stability and obstruction scan before changing its position. A roof edge or branch that appears outside the dish’s immediate direction can still enter the wide viewing envelope.

Align a HughesNet, Viasat or other fixed dish

Fixed geostationary systems require a more exact mechanical setup. The installation address determines the satellite assignment and the azimuth, elevation and skew values. Obtain those values from the provider’s service documentation or installer diagnostics rather than estimating them from a phone compass.

  1. Confirm that the mast is plumb in two directions.
  2. Set the documented elevation on the dish bracket and the specified polarization or skew.
  3. Point the dish near the documented azimuth while keeping the mounting hardware just loose enough for controlled adjustment.
  4. Use the provider’s signal meter or installer diagnostic to make small azimuth changes, pausing after each change for the meter to respond.
  5. Make small elevation changes and continue alternating between azimuth and elevation until the signal peaks.
  6. Tighten the hardware in stages while holding the dish so it cannot move.
  7. Recheck the signal after tightening. A bracket can shift as its bolts are torqued.

Do not treat a low or absent signal as proof that the dish needs a random large rotation. Reconfirm the assigned satellite, angle values, mast plumb, cable connections and clear southern-sky path. If the dish will not peak, request the provider’s technician rather than guessing.

Weatherproof the route and protect long-term reliability

Most installation failures occur at the support, cable or building entry rather than in the satellite network. Keep every connector fully seated and follow the terminal’s specified sealing method; adding incompatible tape or sealant can trap water or prevent service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use a downward drip loop before the cable enters a wall so rain follows the outside of the loop instead of the connector or penetration.
  • Support the cable with clips that do not crush the jacket, leaving enough slack for service without allowing wind movement.
  • Respect the model’s minimum bend radius; for Starlink’s cited guidance, that is 10 cm (4 in).
  • Keep cable runs within the model’s maximum distance; Starlink’s cited limit is 25 m.
  • Inspect roof flashing, sealant and cable jackets after severe weather and after any work near the mount.
  • Follow the exact grounding and surge-protection instructions for the terminal and electrical system.

Rain can reduce available signal margin, and wet foliage can become a temporary obstruction. A connection that works in dry weather but fails whenever rain begins deserves an inspection of dish angle, drainage, seals and cable damage—not simply a router restart.

Verify the connection under real conditions

  1. Confirm that the provider app or modem reports an active connection rather than only local Wi-Fi.
  2. Open several normal websites and run a speed test over a wired connection if possible.
  3. Place a sustained load on the service, such as a large download or video stream, while watching for disconnections.
  4. Check the app or modem logs for obstruction, thermal, cable or intermittent-service alerts.
  5. Repeat the check at another time of day. Moving foliage, changing satellite geometry and different weather can expose marginal clearance.
  6. Reinspect the mount after the first strong wind and verify that the mast has not rotated or loosened.

Viasat’s certified technicians perform connection testing and activation as part of the appointment. For a self-installed system, perform the equivalent checks yourself before relying on it for work, emergency communications or a fixed wireless backup.

Troubleshoot interruptions and failed alignment

Symptom Likely causes What to check next
Frequent short outages A branch, roof edge, pole or other object is entering the required view. Run the obstruction scan again from the final mounted position. Raise or relocate the terminal if the same object appears repeatedly.
No signal after a roof or wall installation The mast moved, is not plumb, a connector is loose, or the cable exceeds the model’s limits. Check rigidity and plumb, reseat connectors, inspect for jacket damage and confirm cable length and bend radius.
Service becomes unstable during rain Marginal pointing, water pooling, damaged seals or wet cable; heavy rain can also reduce signal margin. Inspect the dish angle, drainage, connectors and entry seal. Follow the model’s weather guidance and arrange service if damage is present.
Traditional dish will not peak Incorrect satellite assignment, azimuth, elevation or skew; a non-plumb mast; or an obstruction. Verify the site-specific values and use the provider’s signal meter. Request a technician instead of sweeping blindly with a compass.
Connection works at ground level but not on the permanent mount The new position changed the sky view, cable route or power path. Repeat the obstruction scan, inspect the complete cable run and confirm that the power supply and connectors are within their specified limits.

When professional installation is the right choice

Choose a qualified installer when the work involves utility-line proximity, an exposed or steep roof, a tall mast, uncertain structural capacity, difficult flashing, a long cable route, or a provider-required certification. HughesNet explicitly requires professional installation and instructs technicians to avoid power and other utility service lines while selecting a clear southern-sky location. Viasat describes certified technicians selecting a secure roof, wall or pole location, connecting and testing the service, and completing activation.

Professional help is also appropriate when a fixed dish will not peak after the mast, angle settings and cable have been verified. A technician can confirm the assigned satellite, use the provider’s diagnostic equipment and correct a mount that shifts under load. Stopping before an unsafe climb or uncertain structural modification is part of a reliable installation—not a failure to complete the job.

Final installation checklist

  • Provider, terminal generation, supplied mount and self-install rules are confirmed.
  • The exact final location passed the provider’s obstruction or site-survey check before drilling.
  • The mount is rated for the structure and weather exposure, and the mast is rigid and plumb.
  • The dish has the documented sky view: Starlink’s app-verified envelope or the fixed dish’s assigned southern-sky path.
  • Connectors are fully seated, protected from water and routed with the required drip loop.
  • Cable length and bend limits are respected; Starlink’s cited limits are 25 m and a 10 cm (4 in) minimum bend radius.
  • Alignment was completed in the app or with the provider’s signal meter, then rechecked after tightening.
  • The connection was tested under browsing or sustained load and monitored for obstruction alerts.
  • Any roof, structural, utility-line or provider-certification issue was handed to a qualified professional.
