To install an Android update on a Google Pixel, open Settings > System > Software update, check for an update, and follow the on-screen instructions. Some versions of Android label the page or control System update. A downloaded update installs in the background and takes effect after the phone restarts.
Update your Pixel from Settings
- Prepare the phone. Connect to Wi-Fi and charge the battery to at least 75%. Google recommends these steps because updates can be large and may take time. Google Android Help
- Open the update page. Go to Settings > System > Software update. Depending on your Android version, the page or control may instead say System update.
- Check the status. If an update is available, follow the instructions shown on the phone. You can also open an Android update notification and tap its update action.
- Let installation finish. Pixel phones install downloaded Android updates in the background. The update becomes active the next time the phone restarts, so accept a restart prompt if one appears and allow the phone to complete the process. Google Android Help
Why your Pixel may not show an update
A missing update does not necessarily mean something is wrong. Google releases Pixel updates gradually, and availability depends on the device and carrier; it can take a few weeks for an update to reach a particular phone. Check the update page again later. Google Pixel Phone Help
Check that your model is eligible
Not every Pixel can install every newer Android version. Google’s current support information says Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of OS and security updates, while Pixel 6 and 7 families and Pixel Fold receive five years. These periods are counted from when each device first became available on the Google Store in the US. Google lists Pixel 5a and earlier Pixel devices as no longer receiving Android version or security updates. If the download does not complete
Google says a Pixel that fails to finish downloading an update will try again over the next few days and notify you when the update is available again. Follow the status and instructions shown on the phone; the official guidance does not specify one universal download time or fix for every error message. Google Android Help
