Install a window air conditioner only as directed in the manual for its exact model: window dimensions, fasteners, electrical requirements and drainage design vary. Check the window and sill before lifting, use the specified support and hardware, and seal the AC-to-window and sash gaps with compatible weatherstripping.
Before you install: confirm fit, support and power
Find the installation instructions for the exact model before buying extra hardware or raising the unit. GE Appliances notes that window dimensions differ by model; check the manual for the permitted opening width and height, window type and any special requirements. A typical double-hung-window setup is not automatically suitable for a casement, sliding or unusually deep window.
Inspect the sash, sill and surrounding frame for damage, and confirm they can support the appliance. Check that the required outlet is within reach. If the frame is weak, the outlet or circuit is unsuitable or uncertain, or the installation would require reaching outside, stop and get qualified help. Local rules, rental agreements and building requirements may also affect exterior brackets or installation.
Whirlpool’s cited instructions call for two or more people to move and install the unit, and for a grounded outlet within reach; they explicitly warn against using an extension cord. Follow your own manual and applicable electrical requirements. Do not alter the plug or improvise an electrical connection. Install the unit securely
Prepare seals and hardware on the floor
Assemble the top rail, side curtains, seals and specified fasteners before lifting if the manual directs. Keep braces and other structural parts in place. A DOE Building America fact sheet cautions against removing top and bottom braces that hold a unit in the window; the appliance manual takes precedence for the model you own. Lift, position and fasten with help
Use the number of people specified in the manual; Whirlpool’s cited instructions say two or more are needed for moving and installation. Keep the unit supported as it is positioned, then fasten it with the supplied hardware, sash lock and any compatible support required or specified for that installation. Do not rely on a precarious balance or reach out of the window to steady it.

Support-bracket requirements depend on the appliance, window and applicable rules. GE describes side brackets and a window-lock bracket for its installation, while LG advises firmly fixing the unit so it cannot fall outward. A separate bracket is not automatically necessary or compatible with every window AC. Check the manual, building rules and local requirements; if you cannot keep the unit supported while working safely from inside, use a qualified installer. Follow the model’s drainage and electrical directions
Do not assume every unit should tilt outward by the same amount. ENERGY STAR advises that a room AC be level; LG’s guidance for the models it covers calls for rearward drainage tilt and warns that an incorrect position can cause water to overflow indoors. Follow the instructions for your exact model so water drains as designed, and keep drainage openings unobstructed. ENERGY STAR room air conditioner guidance.

Connect the appliance only as its manual directs, using a suitable grounded outlet. The cited Whirlpool instructions prohibit extension cords; do not change the plug or make electrical alterations to accommodate the unit.
Seal the gaps around the AC
After the unit is fastened, extend the side curtains and fit the seals where the manual specifies. Pay attention to the gaps between the AC or curtain assemblies and the window, and to the opening where the raised sash meets the lower sash. ENERGY STAR’s Version 5.0 room air conditioner specification describes sealing between the AC and window opening, at the sash and sill or window head, and between fixed and movable sashes.

Use the supplied seals when they suit the gap and follow their placement instructions. ENERGY STAR Version 5.0 lists vinyl-clad foam, EPDM cellular rubber, silicone rubber or comparable materials resistant to air and water infiltration and UV degradation. Make sure seals do not block drainage, ventilation or necessary access. An improperly installed room AC can leak as much air as a 6-square-inch hole, according to ENERGY STAR’s room AC guidance, which also recommends using the included insulation materials.
For larger gaps behind surrounding trim, ENERGY STAR separately discusses low-expansion window-and-door foam. That is a trim-sealing task, not a replacement for removable AC weatherstripping; do not use foam to glue the unit into place. ENERGY STAR guidance on sealing windows and doors. Recheck before operating
- Confirm the required brackets, fasteners and sash lock are installed as directed and the unit does not move.
- Check that side panels are extended and sealed, including the sash gap.
- Verify the drainage route is clear and the unit is positioned as its manual specifies.
- Do not operate the AC if the window is damaged, water enters indoors, the unit shifts, the outlet is unsuitable or you are unsure the installation is supported. Resolve the issue or contact a qualified installer first.
Reduce leakage when cooling season ends
If practical and safe, remove the room AC at the end of the cooling season and follow its storage instructions. If it stays installed, ENERGY STAR recommends an appropriately sized cover during winter, provided the appliance instructions allow it.
