Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To install a USB Wi-Fi adapter, plug it in and let Windows check for a driver. If it does not work automatically, download and install the driver for the adapter’s exact model and hardware revision from the manufacturer’s support page. Then connect to your wireless network and confirm the adapter appears in Device Manager.
Check whether your PC already has Wi-Fi
A wireless adapter is the hardware that connects a PC to a wireless network. Before adding a USB adapter, check whether one is already installed: open Start, search for Device Manager, expand Network adapters, and look for an entry with “Wi-Fi” or “Wireless” in its name. Names vary by manufacturer, so a different label does not necessarily mean Wi-Fi is unavailable. See Microsoft’s wireless network setup guidance.
Install the adapter and driver
1. Plug it in and let Windows check
Insert the adapter into a USB port and give Windows a moment to detect it and look for a driver. Windows may install one automatically, but this depends on the adapter. For example, Plugable documents Windows Update installation for its USB-WIFINT when the PC already has internet access, such as through Ethernet; NETGEAR advises installing its software or standalone driver for the NETGEAR models covered by its instructions. These examples do not establish how another model will install.
2. Get the right driver if needed
Find the adapter’s exact model and hardware revision on its label, packaging, or product listing. On an internet-connected PC, visit the manufacturer’s official support or downloads page and choose a driver that explicitly supports your Windows version and adapter revision. Follow that download’s own instructions; installation steps differ by model. NETGEAR’s procedure, for example, extracts a downloaded ZIP and runs its Windows installer or standalone-driver executable. Plugable’s USB-WIFINT instructions use an extracted setup.exe run as administrator and require a restart. Do not assume those steps apply to a different adapter.

For Windows 11, check the manufacturer’s compatibility information rather than relying on a generic driver rule. TP-Link’s frequently updated list covers its own tested products and says that most of its wireless adapters use Windows 10 x64 drivers on Windows 11; that advice is specific to TP-Link, not a general rule for other brands. See TP-Link’s Windows 11 network adapter driver guidance.
3. Transfer the driver if the PC is offline
Download the correct package on another internet-connected device and copy it to a USB flash drive. At the Windows setup stage, Microsoft’s instructions for an INF-based driver require the .inf file to be at the root of the flash drive rather than in a subfolder. In that setup context, Microsoft describes opening Command Prompt with Shift + F10, using DiskPart’s list volume to identify the USB drive letter, then running pnputil /add-driver D:*.inf with the actual drive letter substituted. A device scan with pnputil /scan-devices may also be needed. If the manufacturer package is an executable, open it as directed by the manufacturer. These Command Prompt steps are for the Windows setup scenario; once you are at the desktop, follow the vendor’s installer instructions. See Microsoft’s Windows setup instructions for offline drivers.

Connect to Wi-Fi and confirm the adapter works
- Open Windows’ Wi-Fi network list and select your wireless network.
- Enter the network password and wait for Windows to connect.
- Return to Device Manager and expand Network adapters. Confirm the USB adapter is listed and is not disabled.
If the adapter is listed but you cannot connect, check that you selected the correct network and entered its password. Also verify that the adapter supports the network band and security mode in use. Microsoft recommends WPA3 security when both the router and PC support it; see Microsoft’s wireless setup guidance.
Troubleshoot an adapter Windows does not recognize
- The adapter is missing from Device Manager: Unplug and reconnect it, then check again. If it remains absent, install the exact manufacturer driver and verify that it supports your Windows version and hardware revision.
- The adapter appears, but no networks do: Check that the device is enabled in Device Manager and review its driver details. Confirm that the driver is for the exact adapter model and consider restarting after installation if the manufacturer instructs you to.
- The driver installed, but the adapter will not connect: Check the network name, password, supported band, and security mode. A listed adapter does not by itself confirm that the wireless connection is configured correctly.
- You are thinking of uninstalling the network driver: Save a copy of the correct manufacturer driver first. Microsoft notes that Windows may find and reinstall a driver after a restart; if it does not, install the saved package. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 compatibility
Use the driver page for the adapter’s exact model, hardware revision, and Windows version. A driver listed for one manufacturer or adapter family is not evidence that it supports another. Microsoft’s wireless setup guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; consult Microsoft’s current Windows guidance for support information.
