To install a Samsung One UI update, open Settings > Software update, choose the update check or download option shown on your Galaxy phone, and follow the prompts. If a download fails, first check the error message, available storage, and connection; if Settings still will not update the phone, try Samsung’s Smart Switch on a computer.
Before you install the update
- Connect to a reliable network. Some carriers require Wi-Fi for updates.
- Make sure the phone has enough available storage. If an error reports insufficient space, free at least the amount it identifies.
- Follow the battery guidance shown on your phone or in current Samsung support instructions for your model and region. Samsung’s Malaysia page recommends at least 20% charge, while separate Samsung troubleshooting guidance recommends 50% in its update-preparation context; neither figure is a universal requirement. Install the update from Settings
- Open Settings > Software update.
- Tap the update option available on your phone. It may say Download and install, Check for updates, or similar. Samsung’s U.S. guidance lists Download and install for devices with One UI 8.0 or earlier and Check for updates for devices with One UI 8.5 or later; labels and paths can also vary by model and region. - If an update is offered, follow the on-screen prompts to download and install it.
- Let the process finish without interrupting it. The phone may restart more than once as part of installation; a restart alone does not mean the update is stuck.
Settings is the simplest route because it needs no computer or cable, but the update must be available for that specific device.
If the update is missing or stuck
No update appears
A missing update does not necessarily mean anything is wrong with the phone. Samsung says releases can arrive in waves, so check again later if an update was just announced. Availability can depend on the original carrier; an unlocked phone originally sold for a carrier may need that carrier’s SIM to receive the update. The download stops or shows an error
- Read the error message and act on it first. For insufficient storage, free the amount of space indicated.
- If the download stopped before finishing, check its notification: Samsung says the download may be resumed from there.
- Check the network and switch to Wi-Fi if your carrier requires it.
For recurring trouble through Settings, try Samsung Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac. It is an alternative update route, not a way around carrier or regional release timing. Samsung Smart Switch update guidance

Update with Samsung Smart Switch
- Install or open Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac, then connect the phone with a USB cable.
- If Smart Switch detects an update, select Update and follow its prompts.
- Keep the cable connected and do not use the phone until the update is complete. Samsung Smart Switch instructions
Smart Switch requires a compatible computer and USB connection. If it cannot connect or update the phone, try these steps:
- Restart and update the computer, then reopen Smart Switch.
- Reinstall Smart Switch if necessary.
- Set the phone’s USB connection to file transfer.
- Try another USB port or compatible data cable, or use a different computer.
- If you use Verizon, note that its USB system-update mode is incompatible with Smart Switch and is intended for Verizon’s own update assistant. Samsung Smart Switch troubleshooting
If the phone will not start after a failed update
If the phone cannot boot normally after an update fails, Samsung says service is required to reflash the device. Contact Samsung Support or arrange Samsung service. Do not attempt unofficial firmware-flashing steps.
