Install a full-motion TV mount through the drywall and into verified wood studs; never rely on drywall alone. A swing arm multiplies the load on the wall when you pull the television forward or turn it, so ordinary drywall anchors are not a structural substitute for lag screws in studs. Before drilling, confirm the television’s weight and VESA pattern, the mount’s rating and stud-spacing limits, the drywall thickness, and the pilot-hole size in that exact model’s manual. Level the plate, mark the centers of two suitable studs, drill the specified pilot holes, fit the supplied lag screws and washers, and tighten them firmly without over-tightening. If the studs do not line up, use a manufacturer-approved adapter or reinforcement fastened to adequate studs, move the mount, or obtain a qualified installer.

What you need to verify before drilling

Every number below is model-specific. Treat the examples as checks to make against your own mount’s manual, not as universal limits.

Check Example in the cited documentation Why it matters
TV weight Secura QLF425-B2 lists a maximum TV weight of 120 lb (54.4 kg). The wall, fasteners and arm must carry the TV and mount together.
Wall capacity Secura requires the wall to support five times the combined TV and mount weight. Full-motion movement creates a larger pull-out and bending load than a fixed plate.
Stud construction Examples specify nominal 2 × 4 wood studs. The supplied lag screws are intended for structural wood, not gypsum board.
Drywall covering Some cited manuals allow up to 5/8 inch (16 mm) of drywall over the stud. Thicker or layered wallboard can leave too little screw engagement or require different hardware.
Stud spacing 16 inches (406 mm) is a representative maximum in cited Secura/SANUS-style instructions. A plate designed for a narrower range may not reach two safe stud centers.
Pilot bit Philips SQM9222 specifies a 3 mm (1/8-inch) wood bit; other cited manuals specify 7/32 inch. An incorrect diameter can split a stud, reduce holding power or make the lag screw impossible to drive correctly.
Arm movement SANUS VLF628 is listed for 46–90-inch TVs, 30° swivel in each direction and 28-inch extension. Extension and swivel determine both clearance and the force transferred to the wall.

Also confirm the screen-size range, VESA hole pattern, included screw lengths, spacers, locking mechanism and whether the plate accepts your measured stud spacing. If any requirement is outside the manual, stop and choose a compatible mount or an approved reinforcement system.

Why drywall alone is unsafe for a full-motion mount

Gypsum drywall is a covering, not a structural member. Its paper and gypsum core can support light accessories with a suitable anchor, but they are not intended to resist the repeated pull-out force of a television arm. Secura’s QLF425-B2 safety instruction states, “DO NOT INSTALL INTO DRYWALL ALONE — DRYWALL ALONE WILL NOT HOLD THE WEIGHT OF YOUR TV.” Philips likewise requires its mount to be secured to a supporting wood stud. Amazon’s installation guidance says that on drywall or plasterboard the mount must be secured into two wall studs or a professional should install it.

With the arm retracted, the load is close to the wall. When you pull it forward or turn the screen, the center of gravity moves outward and the leverage at the wall plate rises. Vogel’s explains that pulling forward or turning a full-motion mount applies extra force to a hollow wall. A mount that appears solid immediately after installation can loosen as those forces are repeated. Do not “upgrade” to generic plastic, self-drilling or toggle anchors unless the mount manufacturer specifically approves that structural method for your exact model and TV.

Preparation and safety checklist

  • Read the exact mount manual from cover to cover. Record the allowable TV weight, screen-size range, VESA pattern, stud-spacing range, drywall-covering limit and every supplied fastener.
  • Measure the television’s actual weight without accessories that will not remain on the mount, then add the mount weight as required by the manual. Do not use a guessed shipping weight.
  • Choose a viewing height based on the seated eye level and confirm that the arm can move without striking adjacent walls, cabinets or the ceiling.
  • Keep the drilling area away from known plumbing and electrical routes. Amazon’s guidance explicitly warns not to drill over wiring or pipes.
  • Gather a stud finder, an awl or small nail for confirmation, tape measure, pencil, level, drill, the model-specified wood bit, a screwdriver or socket wrench and a helper who can lift the TV.
  • Lay a blanket or other clean padded surface nearby for attaching the brackets to the television. Keep the screen face protected.
  • Plan cable slack before hanging the set. A cable that is tight at full extension can pull on a connector or prevent the arm from reaching its rated movement.

Find and verify the wood studs

Scan for likely stud locations

Run the stud finder across the intended area and mark each edge indicated by the tool. Detection can be affected by seams, pipes, wiring and dense patches of wallboard, so do not treat one beep or one center mark as proof.

Confirm each center mechanically

Philips instructs installers to mark both edges of a stud and drill at its center. Use an awl or a very small nail at several points along the marked line. Resistance that remains consistent through the drywall and then becomes firm wood indicates the stud; a hollow feel or a sudden void means you have not verified a structural center. Mark the centerline clearly for every hole the plate will use.

Check spacing and alignment

Measure from center to center, not from the visible edges of the wallboard. Compare the result with the plate’s permitted spacing. A nominal 16-inch (406 mm) layout is common, but older construction and some manufactured walls differ. The plate must bear flat against the wall while its structural holes land in the approved portions of two studs.

Install the wall plate into wood studs

  1. Set the height. Hold the supplied template or wall plate at the intended position. Use a level on the plate and adjust until it is square. Account for the television’s bracket location and the arm’s vertical travel before marking.
  2. Mark structural holes. With the plate still level, mark the holes that align with the verified centers of the two studs. Do not move a mark toward an edge merely to make the plate fit.
  3. Inspect the drilling path. Recheck for known plumbing and electrical routes. If the proposed hole conflicts with a service, select another location or have the area assessed by a qualified professional.
  4. Drill pilot holes. Use a sharp wood bit at the diameter and depth specified by the manual. Philips SQM9222 calls for a 3 mm (1/8-inch) bit; other cited instructions call for 7/32 inch. Keep the drill perpendicular to the wall and drill into the stud, not just through the drywall. Do not generalize one model’s bit size to another.
  5. Fit the plate. Place the wall plate over the pilot holes. Insert the supplied lag screws with their washers through the plate and into the studs. Use only the hardware approved for that mount and wall construction; screw length must leave the manufacturer-required wood engagement after passing through the plate and drywall.
  6. Tighten by hand-controlled force. Use a socket wrench or the specified hand tool. Bring each screw up evenly until the washer is seated and the plate is firmly against the wall. The manuals warn that over-tightening can damage the wall or reduce holding power, so do not use an impact driver or continue tightening after the plate is secure.
  7. Recheck level. Confirm the plate has not shifted while the screws were tightened. Correct a level error now, before the arm and television add weight.

Attach the television brackets and hang the TV

Choose the correct VESA hardware

Match the vertical and horizontal hole pattern on the television to the mount’s VESA range. Use the screw diameter and length specified for that television and add the supplied washers or spacers when the manual calls for them. A screw that bottoms out inside the TV or one that engages too few threads can damage the set or fail to retain it. Do not force a screw that does not turn smoothly.

Fasten brackets without power tools

Keep the television face-down only on a padded, stable surface. Align both brackets, keep them parallel and tighten the TV fasteners with a hand screwdriver. The installation sequence supplied for the cited mounts specifically says not to use power tools on the TV fasteners; hand tightening lets you feel when the screw is seated without crushing the rear shell.

Lock the set to the arm

With a helper supporting the screen, lift it onto the arm’s hooks or rails and engage the safety tab or locking mechanism. Verify the lock visually and by a gentle upward check before releasing the television. Never attempt this lift alone with a large or heavy screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test the full range slowly

Move the arm a small distance at a time. Check swivel, tilt and extension while watching the plate, lag-screw heads and bracket connection for movement. Keep HDMI, power and antenna cables loose enough to follow the entire movement, but secure them so they cannot enter a hinge or pinch point. Stop if the plate flexes, a fastener turns without tightening, the safety lock does not engage or the cables become taut.

What to do when studs do not line up

Do not substitute ordinary drywall anchors

If the plate’s holes miss the studs, do not fill the gap with plastic expansion anchors, self-drilling drywall anchors or a single toggle and assume the result is equivalent. Those devices transfer the full moving load to the wallboard unless the mount’s manufacturer explicitly rates them for that exact installation.

Use an approved adapter or reinforcement

Vogel’s describes a TVA 6950 stud adapter for hollow walls and lists compatibility with 16-, 20- and 24-inch and 450- and 600-mm stud distances. An adapter or reinforcement board must itself be fastened into adequate studs, cover the required plate area and be approved for the combined TV and mount load. A heavy screen can require a structural assessment rather than a generic piece of plywood behind the plate.

Relocate or hire a professional

Moving the mount to a location where two permitted stud centers align is often the simplest safe solution. Amazon recommends professional installation when standard stud spacing is unavailable. Choose a qualified installer when the wall is nonstandard, the TV approaches the mount’s weight limit, the studs are damaged, or you cannot confidently rule out hidden services.

Special case: 24-inch stud spacing

Measure first; do not assume that a wall described as “24-inch on center” will work with every plate. The plate must list that spacing or provide an approved adapter. Vogel’s TVA 6950 documentation lists 24-inch spacing among its compatible distances, while many individual plates are limited to narrower ranges. If your mount does not explicitly accept 24-inch centers, use a compatible adapter, select a different mount, relocate the installation or obtain professional advice. Never angle lag screws toward the nearest stud or mount one side into drywall simply to reach the desired viewing position.

Drywall over masonry is a different installation

This procedure is for drywall over wood studs. Solid concrete and concrete block require the masonry section of the exact mount manual, a masonry bit and anchors rated for that substrate. The cited manuals require the wall plate to bear on the concrete surface rather than on a weak covering. Do not reuse the wood-stud pilot-hole size, lag screws or assumptions about stud centers on masonry. If a hollow block, furring strip or thick decorative covering is present, the manufacturer or a qualified installer must determine the correct anchor system.

How to compare full-motion mounts before buying

Use the following criteria rather than choosing by screen size alone:

Comparison point Questions to answer
Rated capacity What is the maximum TV weight, and does the rating include the mount’s own weight? Does the wall need to support a stated multiple, such as five times the combined load?
VESA compatibility Does the bracket cover the television’s measured horizontal and vertical hole spacing, with the required screw sizes and spacers?
Stud and wall limits What stud construction, center-to-center spacing and maximum drywall thickness does the manual permit?
Movement How far does the arm extend, and how many degrees can it swivel and tilt? More extension generally means more leverage on the wall.
Retention Does the arm have a positive safety tab, locking rail or other mechanism that can be checked after hanging?
Hardware Are lag screws, washers, VESA screws and spacers included, and are their sizes clearly identified for wood and masonry?
Nonstandard spacing Is a manufacturer-approved stud adapter or reinforcement option available for 20-, 24-inch or metric spacing?

Troubleshooting after installation

The plate is not level

Remove the TV with a helper and loosen, rather than force, the plate. Confirm that the pilot holes are truly in the stud centers and that the plate is not resting on a wall joint or uneven covering. Re-level and retighten evenly. If a hole has become enlarged or a lag screw spins, do not simply use a thicker screw; move to sound wood or have the repair evaluated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The TV tilts or will not hold its angle

Check that both VESA brackets use the specified holes, spacers and screw lengths. Tighten the mount’s tilt-adjustment hardware according to its instructions, while keeping the TV supported. A persistent tilt can indicate an uneven plate, uneven wall surface or an overloaded arm.

The arm feels loose when extended

Retract and support the TV immediately. Inspect the lag-screw heads, plate-to-wall gap and stud locations. A gap, cracked drywall, crushed wallboard or movement at a screw means the load path is compromised. Do not continue operating the mount; remove the TV with assistance and correct the structural installation or call a professional.

Cables restrict movement

Power the TV off, create a controlled service loop and secure cables away from pivots. Test the complete rated movement again. Never use a taut cable as a makeshift restraint for the arm.

Final safety check

  • The plate is level and sits flat against the wall.
  • Every structural lag screw is in a verified stud center and is firmly seated without over-tightening.
  • The TV weight, VESA pattern, arm range and wall construction are within the exact manual’s limits.
  • The TV brackets use the specified screws, washers and spacers, tightened by hand.
  • The safety tab or locking mechanism is engaged and verified.
  • No cable, pipe or electrical concern was ignored, and cables remain slack through the full movement.
  • The mount is tested gradually in retracted, extended, swivelled and tilted positions before normal use.
