Install a fan translation by applying the project’s patch to an exact, clean copy of the required game release—not to a random ROM or a pre-patched download. Confirm the region, revision, header state, file size and checksum first; use a patcher that supports the supplied format; write a new output file; and test that copy while preserving the original and its saves.
This workflow works for cartridge files and disc images on desktop, in a privacy-conscious browser tool, or on Android. It also avoids the most common causes of checksum errors, crashes, wrong-language screens and damaged saves.
What a fan-translation patch actually is
A translation patch is a difference file. It contains instructions for changing a particular release of a game into a modified version; it is not the game itself. The patch therefore depends on the bytes in the source file that its author used. Two files with the same title can differ by region, revision, dump method, header state or even a single bad byte, and a patch made for one may fail on the other.

The patch normally contains translated text, edited graphics or code changes, while the source file supplies the rest of the game. Renaming an extension, changing a file name or downloading a pre-patched image does not make an incompatible source compatible.

Why “the same game” may still be the wrong source
- Region: Japanese, North American, European and other releases can have different code and text layouts.
- Revision: A later revision may fix bugs or move data even when the title and region are identical.
- Header state: Some cartridge dumps include a header and others remove it. Adding or removing one changes the file’s hash.
- Container and extension: A disc image, compressed archive and extracted image are different inputs. The patch instructions usually identify the expected form.
- Integrity: A damaged or incomplete dump will not match the expected checksum.
Read the translation team’s release notes before touching the file. Record the required platform, region, revision, header requirement, patch format, expected checksum, emulator or hardware notes and save compatibility.
Check the project documentation first
Download the patch and its readme from the translation team’s official release page, site or repository. The readme is the authority for the exact source file; a forum post or a filename found through a search may describe an older release.
Make a requirements note
Write down these items before patching:
- Game platform and whether the target is a cartridge file or disc image.
- Region and revision, including any version number printed by the project.
- Whether the source must be headered or headerless.
- Required extension and uncompressed or compressed state.
- Patch format, such as IPS, BPS, UPS, PPF, xdelta/VCDIFF or BSDiff.
- Source and, if supplied, target checksum.
- Supported emulator, console or hardware and any special settings.
- Whether old save files are compatible.
Projects sometimes publish the exact command they expect users to run. The rom-weaver documentation summarizes the rule as: “Apply whatever format you were handed.” It also advises publishers to “Publish the checksums and the exact command you expect users to run.” Treat both pieces of information as part of the installation instructions, not as optional background.
Preserve the clean file and your saves
Never patch the only copy of a dump. Create a working copy and keep the original read-only or in a separate backup location. Put the files in clearly named folders so you can tell which one is untouched.

Game-translation.patch
Game-working-copy.gba
Game-English-output.gbaThe names are examples; use the extension and naming convention required by your project. Back up emulator save files separately, because a patched game may use different offsets, checksums or data structures. If a patch changes the save format, an old save can appear corrupt even when the patch itself is fine.
A safe folder arrangement
- Original: the untouched, verified dump.
- Patch: the downloaded patch and its readme.
- Work: a copy used as the patcher’s input.
- Output: the newly created translated file.
- Saves-backup: copies of existing save files, kept outside the emulator’s active folder.
If a patcher offers “backup original,” enable it, but do not rely on that option as your only backup. A tool error, an accidental overwrite or a failed storage device can otherwise remove your recovery path.

Verify the base file before patching
A checksum is the quickest way to determine whether your source is the release the author expects. Compare the hash from the project readme with a hash calculated locally. Also confirm the region, revision, extension and header state; a matching filename is not evidence of a matching dump.

Calculate a hash locally
Use a local hashing utility rather than uploading the game file to an untrusted site. For SHA-256, common built-in commands are:
# macOS or Linux
shasum -a 256 "Game-working-copy.gba"
# Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt
certutil -hashfile "Game-working-copy.gba" SHA256Use the algorithm named by the project. If the readme gives CRC32, MD5 or another digest, select that algorithm instead of substituting SHA-256. Copy the resulting string exactly and compare every character, ignoring only formatting such as spaces or line breaks.
Interpret a mismatch
- Recheck the region and revision against the readme.
- Confirm whether the project requires a headered or headerless file.
- Make sure you hashed the extracted file, not an archive or a different copy.
- Check the file extension and size; an apparently harmless conversion can alter the bytes.
- Redump or reacquire the lawful source if the values still differ.
Do not disable checksum checks merely to force a patch. IPS commonly does not validate the source at all, so an IPS operation can appear successful on the wrong file. BPS and UPS include stronger source and target checks. xdelta validation depends on how the patch was produced and which metadata the author included. A successful operation is not proof that an incompatible source became correct.
Choose a patcher that matches the format
Use the format supplied by the project and a tool that explicitly lists support for that format. The following comparison describes the practical differences that matter during installation; a project’s own instructions take precedence.

Do not rename .ips to .xdelta, convert a patch merely because a preferred application lacks support, or mix a patcher’s “generic” mode with a different format. The extension identifies the data structure; changing its spelling does not change that structure.

Apply the patch to a new output file
The labels vary by application, but the sequence is consistent. The clean working copy is the original or input; the translation file is the patch; and the output is a new filename.
- Open the patcher. Confirm that its format list includes the extension supplied by the project.
- Select the input. Choose the verified working copy, not the untouched backup and not an old translated file.
- Select the patch. Browse to the exact patch version described in the readme.
- Choose a new output. Use a clear name such as
Game [English].gbaorGame [Translation].iso. Do not point the output at the input unless the project explicitly requires in-place operation. - Run the operation. Read any source-mismatch or target-size warning instead of dismissing it.
- Record the result. Keep the output beside the readme and note the patch version and date so you can reproduce the installation later.
A normal completion message only means that the tool wrote an output file. It does not guarantee that the language, menus, saves or emulator compatibility are correct, especially with formats that do not validate the source.
Desktop, browser and Android workflows
Desktop patching
Desktop tools are usually the easiest choice for repeatable work because they can read local files, expose detailed errors and preserve a predictable folder structure. For xdelta workflows, a desktop application such as Delta Patcher is appropriate when the project lists xdelta/VCDIFF support. Select the input, patch and a separate output as described above, then verify the output’s file size and launch it with the documented emulator or hardware.

Browser patching without uploading the game
A browser patcher can be useful when you cannot install software, but “in the browser” does not automatically mean private. Use one only when its documentation clearly states that processing occurs locally in the browser and that the ROM or disc image is not uploaded. A local page should still allow you to select a file from your device and save a new output; it should not require a server upload for the operation you intend to perform.
- Check the listed patch formats before selecting a file.
- Read the privacy statement and confirm local processing.
- Do not paste a cloud-storage link or upload a lawful dump merely because the page offers that option.
- Save the output under a new name and keep the original offline or in your backup folder.
- Close the page when finished if the computer is shared.
Browser tools may have limits on very large disc images, mobile storage permissions or less common formats. If the page reports an unsupported format, use a desktop or Android tool rather than renaming the patch.

Android patching
Android patchers such as UniPatcher can apply supported formats on a phone or tablet. First copy the clean source and patch into a folder you control, grant only the storage access the application requires, and verify that the app lists your format. Select the original/input, patch and a new output path. Do not overwrite the only clean copy stored on the device.

Android file managers often create duplicate folders, so check the complete path if the language does not change.
Test the translated output safely
Test the output with the emulator, console or other hardware documented by the translation project. Begin with checks that quickly reveal a wrong source or wrong file:
- Open the title screen and confirm that the expected language or translated title appears.
- Open the main menus and inspect text that should be visibly changed.
- Start a new game and play far enough to reach an early save point.
- Save, close the emulator or device, reload and confirm that the save opens normally.
- Continue until you have exercised any feature the readme identifies as special, such as a required emulator option.
Use a new save for the patched game when the project warns that save structures changed. Keep the old save paired with the unpatched original; do not move it back and forth between versions while troubleshooting.

“Checksum mismatch” or “source mismatch”
The input does not match what the patch expects. Reacquire or redump the exact region and revision, check the header state, verify the extension and compare the hash again. For IPS, which may not perform source validation, calculate the hash yourself even if the patcher reports success.

A wrong source can produce a damaged-looking output when validation is weak. Recheck the project’s compatibility notes and test with the documented emulator or hardware. The emulator may lack a required feature, or the patch may target a particular revision rather than the one you used. Return to the clean copy, verify it, and create a fresh output instead of repeatedly patching the failed file.

The game is unchanged or in the wrong language
Verify that the output file is the one being launched. Emulators often remember an older copy in another directory, and a desktop shortcut may point to the unpatched source. Close the emulator, inspect the full path, rename the output clearly and open it directly once.
The save is missing or corrupt
Start a new save for the translated version and restore the original save only with the unpatched original. If the readme states that saves are incompatible, do not attempt to convert them by renaming files or changing extensions. Keep both versions and their saves in separate folders.
“Unsupported format” or an extension error
Obtain a patcher for the actual extension and confirm that the file is not still inside an archive. Renaming a patch cannot convert its internal format, and forcing an operation can create an unusable output.
The output is created but cannot be opened
Check that the output has a plausible file size, that the destination has enough free space and that the emulator supports the target platform. Reapply the patch from the untouched working copy. If the project supplies a target checksum, compare it; otherwise, report the exact source hash, patch version and error message to the project maintainers rather than distributing the failed file.
Download and privacy hygiene
Use official project release pages or repositories for patches and readmes. Scan archives before opening them, keep the operating system and antivirus software current and avoid installers that bundle unrelated programs. A patch file is still software input: inspect its extension and do not run an executable simply because its filename resembles the translation.
Do not download a “pre-patched ROM” when you can create the output from a lawful dump. Besides the legal and privacy risks of an unknown download, a pre-patched file hides which source, revision and patch version were used, making checksum and crash problems harder to diagnose.
Copyright and anti-circumvention boundaries
Use game files obtained lawfully, check the game’s license and do not redistribute copyrighted game data or a pre-patched image. A translation patch can be a separate set of modifications, but distributing it or applying it may still raise copyright, license or anti-circumvention questions depending on the country and the particular game.
In the United States, 17 U.S.C. §117 permits an owner, under specified conditions, to make another copy or adaptation when it is an essential step in using the program or for archival purposes. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that an archival copy is for a lawful owner and must be destroyed or transferred with the original when ownership ends. Separate anti-circumvention rules under §1201 can apply to technological protection measures, and exemptions are limited and fact-specific. These provisions are not blanket authorization for every fan translation, ROM download or circumvention method. Laws elsewhere differ; obtain local legal advice for a situation involving circumvention, distribution or commercial use.
Make the installation reproducible
Once the translation works, preserve the information needed to recreate it without guessing. Store the readme with the patch, record the source filename and hash, note the patcher and version, and retain the clean original separately. If you update the translation, create a new output rather than patching an already translated file.
