Inspect insulated electrician’s pliers before every use, keep them clean and dry, and remove them from service if their insulation is damaged or its condition is uncertain. Routine cleaning and care can preserve a tool, but cannot repair damaged insulation or make energized work safe.

Inspect pliers before each use

KNIPEX advises users to visually inspect insulated and insulating tools before every use; Klein Tools likewise says to inspect before use. Examine the full length of each insulated handle in good light, including the areas around guards and where the handle meets the metal.

  • Look for cracks, breaks, cuts, nicks, burns, separation, or any other damage to the insulation.
  • Check that the jaws, cutting edges, and joint appear intact and move normally. This is a general condition check, not a substitute for the manufacturer’s insulation inspection criteria.
  • Make sure the tool is clean and dry. Moisture, films, and contaminants can be conductive.

If you find damage, do not use the tool. Klein says to destroy an insulated tool if its insulation is damaged in any way. KNIPEX says visibly damaged tools must be disposed of immediately; if the condition is questionable, have the tool examined by a competent person and retested if needed. Follow the instructions for your specific tool. Klein Tools’ 2139NERINS care and safety guidance and KNIPEX’s insulated-tool instructions describe these precautions.

Clean and protect the metal surfaces

Clean insulated pliers when needed, following the tool maker’s directions. KNIPEX recommends mild detergent, such as dishwashing soap, then careful drying with a suitable cloth or paper towel. It recommends multifunctional oil, such as WD-40 or similar, on metallic surfaces to help prevent rust. Apply oil to metal only; do not oil the insulation. KNIPEX’s care guidance gives these examples, but the plier manufacturer’s instructions take precedence.

Do not try to restore insulation with solvents, abrasive scraping, sanding, heat, paint, or tape. If contamination cannot be safely removed, or you cannot tell whether the insulation remains sound, take the tool out of use and follow the manufacturer’s disposition guidance.

Store and transport insulated pliers carefully

Protect the handles from knocks, cuts, and abrasion in a tool bag, drawer, or holder. KNIPEX recommends storing insulated tools separately from other tools and protecting them from excessive heat and ultraviolet radiation. Check the handles again after transport or an incident that could have damaged them. KNIPEX’s instructions provide its storage recommendations.

Know what the voltage marking does—and does not—mean

IEC 60900:2018 covers insulated, insulating, and hybrid hand tools for work live or close to live parts up to 1,000 V AC and 1,500 V DC. The IEC says these tools contribute to user safety when used by skilled people following safe work methods and applicable instructions; a voltage rating is not permission to work energized. The IEC 60900:2018 publication page identifies the standard’s scope. The IEC lists this as its fourth edition, published 2018-06-20, replacing the 2012 third edition, with a stability date of 2028. The IEC publication record provides the edition information.

KNIPEX instructs users to de-energize equipment and lines before working on or around them, then verify that they are dead with an approved voltage detector. Klein similarly advises de-energizing whenever possible and says tools that may contact an energized source should carry the official international 1,000-volt rating symbol. KNIPEX’s safety instructions and Klein’s product guidance set out those cautions. Use the tool only within its marked rating and the applicable safe-work procedures.

How often should insulated pliers be retested?

There is no single retest interval established for every user, jurisdiction, or workplace by the cited guidance. KNIPEX says relevant standards recommend an annual visual examination by a suitably trained person. Electrical retesting applies when regulations or customer specifications require it, or when doubt remains after visual examination. Check local rules and employer requirements.

KNIPEX’s document gives 10 kV for 10 seconds as an example dielectric test routine, while directing readers to the applicable standards for details. This is not a do-it-yourself test procedure: retesting should be handled by an appropriate qualified service under the rules that apply. KNIPEX’s testing and inspection guidance describes the distinction between visual examination and conditional electrical retesting.

Use color-layer clues only when the maker specifies them

Some insulated pliers have two-color handles. Honeywell Salisbury says that on its tools, visible yellow underlayer can mean the tool may no longer be properly insulated and should be considered for electrical retesting. That is manufacturer-specific guidance, not a universal test for every handle design. It does not override a stricter stop-use instruction: Klein says to destroy its tool if insulation is damaged in any way. Honeywell Salisbury’s pliers guidance describes its two-color insulation note.

When choosing a replacement

When damaged pliers need replacing, match the jaw type and task, and check the voltage marking, stated standard, insulation and guards, and the maker’s inspection and care instructions. IEC 60900 establishes scope and use context; it does not identify a best plier for every job.
