First confirm that your exact Huawei tablet is a cellular model. Wi‑Fi-only (WLAN) tablets do not have usable SIM support, even if another tablet in the same product family does. Check the model printed on the packaging or open Settings > About tablet > Model, then use that model’s Huawei quick-start guide to identify the tray, card size and orientation. Huawei notes that tray positions and layouts vary by product and region.
1. Confirm that your Huawei tablet accepts a SIM
Do not start by searching for a pinhole. Some Huawei tablets are WLAN-only and have no cellular modem or SIM tray. In that case, a SIM cannot be added later; mobile data must come through Wi‑Fi or another supported connection.
Check the exact model name
- Read the model on the retail box or label.
- On the tablet, open Settings > About tablet > Model.
- Search Huawei Support for that complete model and open its quick-start guide or hardware diagram.
A Huawei China support article gives suffix examples for the models covered in that market: AL, AN and L identify cellular versions, while W identifies a WLAN-only version. These are regional examples, not a universal decoding rule for every country or generation. Use the complete model number and its local documentation rather than applying a suffix rule to a different market. See Huawei’s instructions at Huawei Support China.

Use the model guide as the controlling reference
The quick-start illustration for your model determines whether the tablet has a SIM position, an NM memory-card position, or a combined tray. It also determines the required card format and the direction in which the card is loaded. Two tablets with similar names can have different trays, so a general picture is only a starting point.

2. Prepare the tablet and the correct tools
Gather the SIM supplied by your mobile carrier, the eject pin that came with the tablet (if the tray uses a pin), and the model’s quick-start guide. A SIM ejector tool is optional; Huawei’s procedure assumes a card pin, and many tablets include one. Keep the pin away from children.
Powering off is a cautious handling choice, not a universal Huawei requirement. If your model’s guide tells you to shut down before removing or inserting the tray, follow that instruction. Otherwise, avoid changing the card while the tablet is actively using mobile data, and close applications that may be using the cellular connection.
- Work on a clean, well-lit surface so the small card cannot fall into the tablet.
- Keep the SIM dry and handle it by its edges; avoid touching the gold contacts.
- Never use a blade, needle or other improvised object to pry a tray.
- Do not force either the card or the tray. Resistance usually means the card size, slot or orientation is wrong.
3. Find the correct SIM tray and eject hole
Huawei places trays differently across tablet generations. Depending on the model, the tray can be on a side opposite the volume buttons or near the charging port. The exact quick-start diagram is safer than guessing from the tablet’s exterior. Huawei describes these variations in its tablet insertion instructions at Huawei Support China.

Several small openings may look alike. Only the hole shown beside the tray outline in your model diagram is the eject hole. A microphone opening can be deeper and may not release anything; inserting a pin there can damage the device. Align the pin with the tray’s actual eject hole before applying pressure.

Open a pin-eject tray safely
- Hold the tablet securely, with the tray edge visible and supported.
- Insert the supplied eject pin straight, vertically, into the correct eject hole. Do not angle it toward the tablet body.
- Press gently until the tray pops out slightly, then pull it out with your fingers.
- If it does not release with normal pressure, stop. Recheck the model diagram and hole; never twist, pry or increase force.
Huawei warns that incorrect pin use can cause injury or device damage. If the tray remains stuck after the vertical-pin method, use an authorized Huawei service channel rather than inserting a blade or opening the enclosure. For a standard card that still will not fit, Huawei advises backing up your data and taking the tablet, the card and proof of purchase to a nearby Huawei Customer Service Center; the service guidance is at Huawei Support Global.
4. Match the SIM card to the tray
Read the labels and molded outlines on the tray before placing the card. The marked position may say SIM, nano-SIM, or another size designation. On some models, a second position is labeled NM for Huawei’s memory-card format. A SIM placed in an NM position will not register, and a memory card does not become a SIM simply because it fits the opening.
Use the specified physical size
Use the form factor named by the tray and guide. A card cut down from a larger micro-SIM can remain too thick, have uneven edges, or be slightly out of shape. Those defects can prevent seating, damage the contacts or make the tray stick. Huawei specifically warns that mismatched dimensions can damage the slot or prevent recognition. Do not trim the card again; ask your carrier for a correctly sized replacement. See the fit guidance at Huawei Support Global.

The practical choices are therefore:
| Situation | Safe action |
|---|---|
| The tray is marked for a particular SIM size | Use a carrier-issued card in exactly that size. |
| A self-cut or adapter-fitted card is too thick or irregular | Stop inserting it and request a standard replacement from the carrier. |
| The tray has separate SIM and NM positions | Use the position labeled SIM; follow the model diagram for any memory card. |
| The tablet has no SIM position in its guide | Treat it as WLAN-only; do not try to adapt another opening. |
5. Place the SIM in the tray
Most Huawei tablet illustrations show the card’s metal contacts facing upward and the notched corner entering its matching recess first. The SIM notch must align with the tray notch; the card should lie flat inside the molded outline. This is the orientation described in Huawei’s general tablet instructions and fit article, but your model’s illustration overrides it if the layout differs.

- Position the tray on a flat surface or hold it level.
- Set the SIM into the slot labeled for SIM, matching the clipped corner to the tray’s clipped corner.
- For the illustrated Huawei layout, keep the contacts facing up and guide the notched corner into the corresponding slot first.
- Press only enough for the card to sit flush and secure. It should not rock, bow or protrude above the tray.
- Inspect the edges. If the card does not settle without pressure, remove it and recheck size and orientation.
Do not rely on the gold contacts alone to determine direction; some trays are reversed or shaped differently. Compare the actual cutout and label with the quick-start image for your model. Huawei’s notch-alignment guidance is available at Huawei Support Global.
6. Reinsert the tray and start the tablet
- Keep the tablet face-up and hold the tray level with the tablet frame.
- Slide the tray in along its rails without tilting or twisting it.
- Push gently until the tray is completely flush with the edge. Do not press on a protruding card to force it home.
- If you powered down according to your model guide, turn the tablet on. Otherwise, wait a moment for the cellular service to reinitialize.
- Unlock the tablet and look for a carrier name, signal bars or a mobile-network indicator.
A newly inserted SIM may still require carrier-side activation, a valid plan or a replacement if the card is defective. Huawei’s tablet instructions do not define carrier activation steps, account changes or plan requirements; contact the mobile carrier for those matters.
7. Fix a SIM that will not fit
Check the notch and slot outline
Remove the tray and compare the card’s clipped corner with the tray’s clipped corner. If the notch is on the wrong side, rotate the card rather than pushing it. Confirm that you are using the SIM position, not an NM memory-card position, and that the card size printed or drawn on the tray matches the card in your hand.

A self-cut nano-SIM can be dimensionally wrong even when its visible contact area looks correct. A micro-SIM cut down may also be too thick for the tray. Do not sand, trim or tape it. Request a factory-sized SIM from the carrier and keep the incompatible card out of the tablet until the replacement arrives.

Stop if insertion needs force
A card that catches, bends or rises above the tray can damage the reader. Remove it, inspect the tray for debris or deformation, and consult the model guide again. If the tray itself will not seat after the card is removed, do not force it; arrange Huawei service.
8. Fix a tray that will not eject
- Confirm that you are using the eject hole shown in the model diagram, not a microphone opening.
- Hold the pin vertically and press straight in with controlled, moderate pressure.
- Try once more only after checking that the pin is fully aligned and not bent.
- If the tray still does not pop out, stop and contact an authorized Huawei service center.
Do not pry around the tray with a knife, paper clip or screwdriver. Huawei’s service guidance recommends backing up data and bringing the tablet and proof of purchase to a Huawei Customer Service Center when a standard card will not fit or the tray remains stuck. Details are provided at Huawei Support Global.

Restart after reseating
Power the tablet off and on, or use its normal restart command, after confirming that the card is flat and the tray is fully closed. A restart can make the system reread a card that was inserted while the tablet was running.
Clean contacts carefully
Inspect the SIM’s metal contacts for fingerprints, dust or residue. Remove the card and gently wipe it with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. Do not apply liquid, scrape the contacts or insert a wet card. Reinstall it using the model’s orientation diagram.
Verify the slot label
On trays with separate SIM and NM positions, make sure the card is in the opening labeled SIM. Huawei identifies incorrect SIM/NM placement as a cause of failed detection. Check the labels every time the tray is removed, because the positions can look similar.
Separate tablet, card and carrier faults
If the same SIM fails in another compatible device, ask the carrier to test or replace it. If a known-good, correctly sized SIM also fails in the Huawei tablet, the tray, reader or cellular hardware may need service. For account activation, plan status, network provisioning or replacement, contact the carrier; Huawei’s cited troubleshooting instructions do not provide carrier-specific activation procedures. Huawei’s detection checklist is at Huawei Support Global.
10. Quick decision guide by symptom
| What you observe | Most useful next check | When to stop |
|---|---|---|
| No SIM tray appears in the model guide | Confirm the complete model and whether it is a WLAN-only version. | Do not insert a card into another opening. |
| Card will not sit flat | Match the required size, notch and SIM slot marking. | Replace a cut or wrong-size card through the carrier. |
| Tray does not release | Use the correct hole and a vertical eject pin. | Seek Huawei service instead of prying. |
| Tray closes but no SIM appears | Enable SIM management, restart, clean contacts and verify SIM versus NM placement. | Have the carrier test the card or arrange device service. |
| Signal bars are absent after detection | Check carrier activation, plan status and local coverage with the carrier. | Do not assume the tray is defective until the account and card are confirmed. |
11. Model and region differences to keep in mind
There is no single Huawei tablet tray design. Cellular and WLAN-only versions can share a product family name; the tray may move from one edge to another; and a model may combine SIM and memory-card positions or omit memory expansion entirely. Card orientation can also differ from the common contacts-up illustration. The complete model number, regional quick-start guide and markings on the physical tray are therefore more reliable than a photograph or procedure for another Huawei tablet.
Huawei’s Chinese support page is useful for identifying the regional suffix examples and the general insertion sequence, while its global fit and detection pages address cut-card dimensions, safe ejection and recognition failures. Read the instructions that match your market before acting, especially when the model number contains a regional variant.
Safety checklist before you finish
- The tablet model is confirmed as cellular, not WLAN-only.
- The hole used for ejection matches the model diagram.
- The SIM size matches the tray marking and the card is not self-cut.
- The notch and contacts match the orientation shown for this model.
- The card lies flat and the tray closes without force.
- The SIM is enabled in SIM management after startup.
- Carrier activation and plan status are confirmed if the tablet still has no service.
Following those checks prevents the most common insertion failures: using a WLAN-only tablet, choosing the wrong hole, putting a SIM in an NM slot, forcing an incorrectly sized card, or diagnosing a carrier problem as a hardware fault.
