Equip the largest backpack you have unlocked in the Backpack Extension slot on the Character screen, then use a repeatable loop: farm Scavengers near Rookmore or collect destroyed metal and world pickups, return to your base before the bag fills, and unload the scrap into storage chests. Backpacks are progression upgrades rather than stackable bonuses, so only your highest equipped tier contributes extra slots.
How inventory expansion works
Enshrouded gives your character a personal inventory and a separate equipment slot for a backpack extension. The backpack is an equipable item: open the Character screen, place one backpack in the Backpack Extension slot, and its bonus is added to the inventory you can carry. You cannot equip several backpacks at the same time or add the bonuses together. The Official Enshrouded Wiki lists 24 default inventory slots and a maximum of 56 slots with a Large Backpack (accessed 2026).

These figures describe slots, not a guaranteed amount of Metal Scraps. The number of physical scrap items you can carry also depends on how the game groups items into stacks and on what else is occupying your inventory. Keep unrelated loot, tools and quest items out of the farming bag when you want the full practical benefit of the upgrade.

How to get the Large Backpack
The Large Backpack is crafted by the Bard or Bard Assistant once the Leather requirement has been unlocked. The listed recipe is:
- 5 Leather
- 5 Linen
The Official Enshrouded Wiki identifies Leather as an unlock requirement for the recipe (accessed 2026). If Leather is not yet available in your progression, you cannot bypass that requirement by carrying a second smaller bag. Equip the highest tier you have and upgrade when the recipe becomes available.

Check the unlock before gathering materials
Open the crafting interface associated with the Bard or Bard Assistant and verify that the Large Backpack recipe is visible. If it is locked, the missing condition is progression, not a shortage of Leather or Linen. Gather the materials while you advance, then craft the bag as soon as the recipe is unlocked. This avoids making a long scrap run with a goal that your current character cannot yet complete.
Replace the old tier rather than trying to stack it
After crafting the Large Backpack, put it in the Backpack Extension slot and remove the older backpack from that slot. The tier bonuses are not cumulative; equipping Tiny, Small, Medium and Large together is not possible. Keep an older bag only as an item in storage if you want it for later use, not as an additional capacity upgrade.
Equip the upgrade correctly
- Open the Character screen.
- Locate the Backpack Extension slot.
- Drag or select your best available backpack for that slot.
- Close the screen and open the inventory to confirm that the expanded grid is present.
- Before leaving for a scrap run, move nonessential items to your base storage so the new slots are available for Metal Scraps and other materials.
If the inventory size does not change, the usual cause is that the backpack is still in a normal inventory square instead of the Backpack Extension slot. Another possibility is that a lower tier is equipped while the higher tier remains in a chest; only the item in the extension slot affects your carried capacity.

Best early source: Scavengers around Rookmore
For an early-game Metal Scrap route, target Scavengers around Rookmore. The Official Enshrouded Wiki describes these Scavengers as a good early-game source (accessed 2026). Rookmore is therefore a practical starting route when you need scrap before you have a large stockpile or a fully developed base.
How to run the Rookmore loop
- Start at the base that gives you the shortest safe trip to the Rookmore area.
- Leave with the largest equipped backpack and enough combat equipment to defeat the Scavengers you encounter.
- Collect Metal Scraps from defeated Scavengers and pick up any nearby physical scrap drops.
- Keep the route focused on scrap instead of filling slots with unrelated materials.
- Turn back when the inventory is nearing its practical limit, then deposit the haul at your base.
The available material and enemy placement can vary as you explore and as the game changes. No published scraps-per-minute measurement is established for Rookmore, so treat it as a recommended early source rather than a guaranteed numerical efficiency benchmark.
Other ways to collect Metal Scraps
Destroy metal objects
Destroyed metal objects are another listed source of Metal Scraps. When travelling through an area, break eligible metal objects instead of passing them by, particularly if your route already takes you away from Rookmore. This turns exploration and clearing into part of the farming loop without requiring a separate detour.
Collect physical world pickups
Metal Scrap also appears as physical pickups in the world. Sweep the ground and nearby structures after combat or destruction, because a route that only counts enemy drops can leave loose material behind. Pickups are especially useful when you are already moving between objectives and want to fill the unused space in your backpack.
Choose a route based on your base location

A repeatable farming workflow
Use the following loop whenever you need a predictable supply of scrap. It is designed to prevent a full inventory from wasting drops and to make each trip easy to repeat.
- Prepare the bag. Equip your highest backpack tier in the Backpack Extension slot. Empty unrelated items into base storage.
- Confirm your progression. If the Bard or Bard Assistant offers the Large Backpack and you have Leather and Linen, craft it before farming. Otherwise use Tiny, Small or Medium, whichever is the highest tier available.
- Pick a target. Use Scavengers around Rookmore for an early dedicated route, or select a travel area containing destroyed metal objects and physical pickups.
- Collect deliberately. Defeat Scavengers, break eligible metal objects and pick up loose scrap. Avoid filling slots with materials that are not part of this run unless you have spare capacity.
- Watch capacity. Do not wait for the final slot if the return trip is long. Turning around while you still have room prevents a valuable drop from being left on the ground.
- Return to base. Bring the scrap to your storage area rather than starting another activity with a nearly full inventory.
- Deposit and reset. Move the scrap stacks into a chest, check that the backpack is empty enough for the next loop, and repeat.
This loop separates carrying capacity from long-term storage. The backpack determines how much reaches home in one trip; chests determine how much you can retain after unloading.
Store the haul in chests
Storage chests let you offload Metal Scraps at your base so the personal inventory is available for the next run. The storage reference lists capacities from 16 slots for a Tiny Chest to 72 slots for an Enormous Magic Chest. Those figures are not equally reliable across versions: the storage page carries a “This Page Needs Attention” warning and says magic-chest ranges have been reported to have changed and require testing after updates (Official Enshrouded Wiki, accessed 2026).

- After an update, open the chest and check its actual slot count instead of relying on an older magic-chest listing.
The published chest capacities are reference values, not a promise that every current game build displays exactly the same range. Your in-game chest is the authority for the version you are playing.

Before any backpack recipe is available
Use the default inventory and plan short trips. Prioritize nearby destroyed metal objects and world pickups, because a short return distance reduces the impact of the smaller bag. Deposit after each loop instead of carrying unrelated loot while farming.

With a Tiny or Small Backpack
Equip the available tier immediately. The extra slots are most useful when you reserve them for scrap and keep tools or exploration loot under control. Rookmore can still serve as an early source, but use a conservative turn-around point if your base is far away.
With a Medium Backpack
The Medium tier provides the largest listed upgrade before the Large recipe, so it is suitable for longer Rookmore loops or for combining combat with collection of nearby metal objects. Continue depositing frequently; a bigger bag reduces trips but does not remove the need for storage.
After unlocking Leather and the Bard recipe
Craft the Large Backpack with 5 Leather and 5 Linen, equip it in the extension slot, and make the next run with the full available capacity. The upgrade is most valuable when your route has a long round trip or many scrap sources close together, because more of each excursion can arrive at the base before unloading.
Capacity planning for scrap runs
Think of each trip as two limits: the number of personal inventory slots and the number of slots remaining in your base chest. A Large Backpack solves only the first limit. If the chest is full, you still have to stop and sort before farming again; if the backpack is full, you cannot collect additional material until you return.
- Short route: A smaller backpack can be adequate when Rookmore or a metal-object cluster is close to your base.
- Long route: The highest tier reduces the chance that the return trip begins before you have collected all nearby scrap.
- Mixed objective: Reserve slots for quest or exploration items first, then estimate how much space remains for scrap.
- Base preparation: Empty the scrap chest before leaving so every available slot can receive the next haul.
Because no source establishes a fixed stack size or a measured collection rate, do not convert the slot totals into a promised number of scraps per hour. Use the slot count as a planning ceiling and adjust the turn-around point to what you observe in your current game version.

Common problems and fixes
The backpack gives no extra slots
Open the Character screen and inspect the Backpack Extension slot. A backpack sitting in a regular inventory square is not equipped. Move the best tier into the extension slot, then reopen the inventory grid.

You crafted a new tier but capacity did not increase
Check whether the older tier is still equipped. Backpack bonuses do not stack, so crafting alone does not change capacity; the new item must replace the equipped one.
The Large Backpack recipe is missing
Verify that you have reached the Bard or Bard Assistant and unlocked Leather. The listed recipe requires both the progression unlock and 5 Leather plus 5 Linen. Until those conditions are met, continue with your highest available smaller tier.
The bag fills before you reach home
Start the trip with unrelated items removed, choose a closer return point, and turn back before the final slot is consumed. If you are exploring, collect scrap on the way rather than adding a separate long detour to the run.
The chest does not match an online capacity list
Use the slot count shown by the chest in your game. The storage reference itself warns that magic-chest ranges may have changed and need testing after updates, so older published values should not override the current in-game result.
You cannot find enough scrap at one location
Combine the available sources: target Scavengers around Rookmore, destroy eligible metal objects along the route and collect physical world pickups. The source material does not establish a guaranteed spawn count or route yield, so adapt the loop to what is present in your current area and version.
