Focus on sleep duration, bedtime and wake-time consistency, and awakenings—not a single night’s score or estimated sleep stages. A wearable can help you describe your sleep, but it cannot diagnose or treat a sleep disorder.
What sleep tracking data should you pay attention to?
Start with a few basic measures that can inform a routine: when you go to bed, when you wake up, how long you appear to sleep, and whether you wake during the night. Compare these across ordinary days rather than judging one unusually good or bad night. Sleep needs vary with age, so do not use one target for everyone. CDC guidance recommends at least 7 hours for adults ages 18–60, 7–9 hours for adults ages 61–64, and 7–8 hours for adults 65 and older. CDC: About Sleep.
Include context that a device may not capture. CDC’s sleep-diary guidance includes bedtime, night awakenings, morning wake time, naps, exercise, alcohol or caffeinated drinks, and medications. A paper diary can record these alongside estimates from an app or wearable. CDC sleep guidance.
- Bedtime and wake time: Look for day-to-day variation and whether your schedule is regular.
- Sleep duration: Consider the pattern in light of your age and how you feel during the day.
- Awakenings: Record repeated waking, but do not assume a device’s count explains why it happens.
- Daytime context: Note naps, exercise, caffeine, alcohol, and medications so you can compare sleep with relevant habits.
Sleep-stage estimates and composite scores may look precise, but they are not clinical tests. Prioritize the schedule and duration patterns you can use to guide a practical routine change.

How to use a tracker to adjust your schedule
- Choose a recording method. Use a wearable or app if you can record consistently, or a paper diary if it captures your routine better or feels less distracting. NHLBI offers a printable sleep diary; buying a logbook is not necessary.
- Build a baseline across ordinary days. Record bedtime, estimated sleep onset if available, awakenings, final wake time, and naps. Add the daytime context listed above. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) recommends consistent use to establish a baseline, but does not prescribe a specific number of days. AASM, January 26, 2026.
- Review the pattern in the morning. Compare bedtime, wake time, duration, and awakenings across days. Avoid checking scores at night or trying to optimize every metric; the AASM cautions that tracking can itself become a source of worry.
- Choose one manageable change. For example, work toward a more regular wake time, then observe how the pattern changes. Keep changes small and repeatable rather than reacting to each night’s score.
- Reassess the trend. Continue recording consistently and consider whether the schedule and daytime experience are improving. If the data make you anxious or keep you awake, take a break from tracking and discuss the concern with a healthcare professional.
How can you tell if your bedtime is too late?
A tracker cannot determine a universally correct bedtime from a score. Look instead at your usual wake time, how much sleep you get across multiple days, and whether you feel tired despite what seems like enough sleep. A bedtime that varies substantially may also make it harder to maintain a regular sleep-wake schedule. CDC recommends going to bed and getting up at the same time every day as a general sleep habit. CDC: About Sleep.
Other general CDC sleep habits include keeping the bedroom quiet, relaxing, and cool; turning off electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bed; avoiding large meals and alcohol before bed; and avoiding caffeine in the afternoon or evening. These are general habits, not a personalized treatment plan.
When a schedule problem may involve circadian timing
The sleep-wake cycle follows a roughly 24-hour circadian rhythm. Light reaching the eyes helps the brain recognize daytime. A schedule that is out of sync can occur with circumstances such as jet lag or shift work disorder, so a tracker’s low score alone cannot explain the cause. Treatment for circadian rhythm disorders depends on the type and severity and may include lifestyle changes, bright light therapy, melatonin, or a combination recommended by a doctor. Do not use consumer tracking data to choose a melatonin dose or light-therapy protocol yourself. NHLBI: Circadian Rhythm Disorders—Treatment.

No. AASM’s 2018 position statement says consumer sleep technologies lack adequate validation against polysomnography and cannot be used to diagnose or treat sleep disorders. It notes that such tools may support a patient-clinician conversation when considered as part of an appropriate clinical evaluation. The statement’s FDA-related wording reflects its 2018 context and should not be read as a current regulatory assessment of any particular device. AASM position statement on consumer sleep technology.
Bring a diary or tracker history as supporting context, not as proof of a diagnosis. CDC advises talking with a healthcare provider about regular sleep problems or symptoms of common sleep disorders. Trouble falling asleep, repeated night waking, or feeling tired despite enough sleep are signs of poor sleep quality worth raising with a provider. CDC: About Sleep.

Wearable or paper diary: which should you use?
| Method | Consistency and ease | Context recorded | Cost | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wearable or app | Can record estimates consistently if you use it regularly; capabilities vary by device. | May not include daytime habits such as caffeine, alcohol, exercise, and medications, so add them separately if relevant. | Varies by device and app; not stated in the cited guidance. | Choose it if it is convenient and its estimates do not increase worry. Do not treat its scores as a diagnosis. |
| Paper or printable diary | Requires manual entries, but lets you record the same fields each day. | Can include bedtime, awakenings, wake time, naps, exercise, alcohol or caffeinated drinks, and medications. | NHLBI provides a free printable diary. | Choose it if manual recording helps you capture context or feels less distracting than device scores. |
Neither method is established here as clinically more accurate. AASM cautions against using consumer sleep technology to diagnose or treat sleep disorders; a diary is a record of your observations, not a diagnostic test.
When to step back from tracking
Sleep data are useful only if they help you notice patterns without making sleep more stressful. AASM spokesperson Dr. Shalini Paruthi said: “If you find yourself lying awake worrying about your sleep duration or quality, it may be time to step back and consult with a health care professional about your concerns.”

Interest in tracking is widespread in the United States, but survey figures describe reported behavior, not health outcomes: in an AASM online survey of 2,007 U.S. adults fielded June 5–13, 2025, 48% said they had used a sleep-tracking device and 55% said they were acting on what they learned from one. The release reported an overall margin of error within ±2 percentage points at 95% confidence. For comparison, AASM reported that 35% said they had used a device in its 2023 survey. AASM survey release, January 26, 2026.
