To improve Fortnite connection quality, first identify whether you have high ping, packet loss, or lag that appears only when your home network is busy. Then test the game’s route, try Ethernet or reduce competing traffic, and compare results. A faster download speed alone does not guarantee lower or steadier in-game ping.
Identify the connection problem before changing settings
Ping, or latency, is the time data takes to travel from your device to a Fortnite server and back, measured in milliseconds. Lower ping is generally preferable, but a test to a different server—or at a different time—may not match your actual match. Lag can come from Wi-Fi or router conditions at home, congestion or routing at your ISP, or the matchmaking subregion used for a match.
Separate high ping, packet loss, and lag spikes
- Consistently high ping: Check the route and the Fortnite subregion your matches are using. Epic says a match may be placed within the selected region in a subregion that balances ping, queue times, and fairness.
- Packet loss: Some data is not reaching its destination. Epic Games Support’s troubleshooting guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, says packet loss should be 0% and that levels consistently above about 1% can cause in-game problems even when average ping changes little. Treat this as Epic’s guidance, not a universal threshold.
- Intermittent spikes: Compare results when the connection is idle and when the same downloads, streams, or uploads that coincide with lag are active. An idle test can miss congestion caused by household traffic.
Review average ping alongside packet loss and jitter. Jitter is variation in latency; Epic advises keeping it low and comparing minimum and maximum latency values. A sudden ping increase may involve ISP routing: Epic says it is usually caused by how an ISP routes traffic, but that is a common cause, not a diagnosis for every player.
Test an Epic endpoint, not an unrelated speed-test server
Epic lists diagnostic endpoints for Fortnite subregions on its support page. Choose the endpoint for the region you are investigating; the Virginia host below is only an example, not a universal target. Epic’s example sends 50 packets and reports average latency.

Run the test more than once, including during the kind of network load that triggers the problem, and note the endpoint, average latency, packet loss, and minimum and maximum values. These commands use ICMP, while Fortnite gameplay uses UDP. Epic notes that some networks deprioritize ICMP, so a normal ping test does not conclusively clear the game route.

Make one change at a time and compare the same measurements under similar conditions. That makes it easier to tell whether a step helped rather than merely coinciding with a quieter network.

Restart equipment and reduce competing traffic
- Restart your modem and router, then reconnect the gaming device and check Fortnite again.
- Pause large downloads, uploads, and video streams while playing. Uploads are worth checking in particular: Epic notes that many home connections have less upload capacity than download capacity, so uploads can disrupt gameplay.
- If the lag occurs mainly when the network is busy, check whether the router offers QoS, Smart Queue, or Gaming Mode. Consult its manual and test the feature; implementation varies, and it may not help when the connection is otherwise quiet.
Compare Ethernet and Wi-Fi
If you play over Wi-Fi and your device supports a wired connection, test Ethernet. A cable avoids wireless signal loss and interference as variables, but it cannot fix a problem with ISP routing or a Fortnite server. The useful first step is to borrow or use a compatible cable to compare results before buying anything.
On a Windows PC whose Ethernet connection fails, Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that the cable is seated and connected to the correct router port, trying another cable, restarting the modem and router, and testing another device. These checks can help isolate whether the issue is the PC, cable, adapter, router, or ISP. Microsoft also notes that a USB-to-Ethernet adapter may be an option if a PC lacks an Ethernet port; check compatibility before choosing one.

If Ethernet is impractical, compare 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi from the room where you play. Epic describes 2.4 GHz as longer range but potentially more crowded, and 5 GHz as faster but shorter range. The better choice depends on signal and interference in that room, so test both rather than assuming one will perform best.
Check router placement and software
- Place the router in an open, less obstructed area rather than a closet, basement, or blocked space.
- Check the router maker’s instructions for an available firmware update and install it if appropriate for your model.
- Consider a replacement router only if your checks point to a faulty router. A new router is not a general fix for ISP congestion or a poor route to the game.
Adjust Fortnite’s subregion preference carefully
In Fortnite, open Settings > Game > Language and Region and select a preferred subregion under Subregion Preference. Epic recommends this to make it more likely that you are placed in the preferred subregion. It is a preference, not a guarantee that every match will use one fixed data center; Epic warns that it can increase queue times and reduce match quality.

If high ping or packet loss persists after home-network checks, give your ISP the exact Epic endpoint tested, the command and result, and the ping shown in Fortnite. Explain that the command tests ICMP while gameplay uses UDP. Because ICMP may be deprioritized, neither a poor nor a normal command-line result alone proves exactly how the gameplay route is behaving.
