If your portable internet radio has a weak Wi-Fi signal, first test it where you use it, then try moving the radio or router and reducing obstacles. Adjust an antenna only if your radio’s manual says it is user-adjustable. If those free steps do not help, a range extender may improve coverage when it is placed where it can still receive a strong signal from the router.
Check whether the problem is Wi-Fi coverage
Test the radio in the spot where it usually sits. If other devices also have weak Wi-Fi there, the issue is more likely to be coverage or interference. If they connect normally, check the radio’s setup and instructions instead. The WR-18 user manual recommends comparing the radio’s signal indicator with another Wi-Fi device in the same location; that advice is specific to the WR-18.
Temporarily move the radio closer to the router. If its connection improves, distance or obstacles are likely contributing. A weak signal is not the only possible cause of a failed connection or interrupted stream: confirm that the router and internet connection work, and check the radio’s Wi-Fi password and network settings.
Improve reception without buying anything
Move the radio or router
Where practical, move the radio closer to the router, or place the router nearer the area where you listen. Try an open position rather than a spot behind furniture or other barriers. ASUS recommends placing a router in an open area and closer to the wireless device where practical.

Reduce obstacles and interference
Walls and other barriers, metal objects, and some appliances can affect reception. ASUS lists microwaves and refrigerators as possible interference sources. Try moving the radio or router away from such obstructions and sources, then check whether the radio holds its connection more reliably.
Adjust antennas only as the manual directs
Some radios have a user-adjustable Wi-Fi antenna; others may use a different design or have no adjustable antenna. Philips advises adjusting the Wi-Fi antenna on its radio, while VOXX provides an antenna-orientation suggestion for the ARIR205 setup. Follow the instructions for your exact radio and router rather than assuming that one position suits every model.

Check the radio’s network setup
If other devices work well at the radio’s location, verify that the radio has the correct Wi-Fi password and network configuration. Use the manufacturer’s instructions to reconnect or reconfigure the radio. The steps and supported network options vary by model, so do not assume that every portable internet radio supports the same Wi-Fi bands or security settings.
When a Wi-Fi range extender may help
If the router’s coverage remains weak where you need to use the radio, a range extender may help relay the signal. It will not fix a failed internet connection or a router that has lost service, and compatibility with a particular radio is not established for all extenders.

Placement matters: put the extender between the router and the radio, but in a spot where it still receives a good signal from the router. An extender placed in the dead zone may have too weak a connection to relay reliably. TP-Link describes placement as a major factor in extender performance and recommends positioning its extender between the router and weak-signal area while maintaining a strong router signal there. Verizon gives similar guidance for its own extender. Follow the placement instructions for the extender you use.

These options have not been compared in controlled tests for portable internet radios, so no universal improvement or signal threshold can be promised. The WR-18 manual’s recommendation to maintain at least two signal bars applies to that model only.
