For a more stable Meta Quest 2 Air Link connection, connect your Windows gaming PC to the router with Ethernet, keep the headset on 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and improve the router’s position near your play area. Air Link streams PC VR over your local network, so a faster internet plan by itself is unlikely to fix a weak or congested connection between the PC, router, and headset.
How Air Link uses your local network
Air Link sends PC VR content from a Windows gaming PC to Quest 2 over your home wireless network. The relevant path is PC-to-router and router-to-headset, not simply the speed of your internet connection. Meta’s Air Link guidance describes the wireless streaming setup.
When both the PC and headset use Wi-Fi, packets have to cross the wireless channel for both legs of that path. Meta’s setup material explains why wiring the PC can reduce the wireless work the network must do: Meta Quest Link setup PDF.
Set up the PC and headset on the recommended connections
Connect the gaming PC to Ethernet
Run an Ethernet cable from the PC to a LAN port on the router or access point. Meta Store Support’s forum recommendation is: “Have the PC connected to Router/Access Point via Ethernet cable and not Wi-Fi”. This is setup guidance, not a controlled performance test. After connecting the cable, confirm Windows is using the wired network rather than continuing to use Wi-Fi.

Keep Quest 2 on 5 GHz Wi-Fi
Meta recommends connecting the headset on the 5 GHz band using AC or AX Wi-Fi. If your router uses one network name for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, band steering may move the headset to 2.4 GHz. If the router allows it, give the bands separate network names and connect Quest 2 to the 5 GHz network. Meta Store Support states: “Headset should be connected to Wi-Fi via 5GHz band (AC or AX)”.
Improve the signal where you play
Before replacing hardware, put the router or access point in the same room as the headset, ideally with a clear line of sight. Raise it at least 1 m (3.3 ft) above the floor, and reduce distance and obstacles between it and the play area. Walls, distance, and other wireless activity can make an otherwise capable router less reliable in the spot where you use Quest 2.

Test one change at a time. For example, first move closer to the router, then test a different 5 GHz channel if your connection is still unstable. This makes it easier to tell which adjustment helped rather than changing several variables at once.
Troubleshoot mesh systems and channel congestion
Meta’s best-practice guidance favors a non-mesh configuration, but mesh is not an automatic disqualifier: another Meta support response says mesh can work. For diagnosis, connect the headset near the main mesh node or temporarily try a simple non-mesh access point. If the router offers channel selection, try another 5 GHz channel when congestion or instability is suspected. Avoid letting the headset roam between nodes or bands during a test if you can configure that behavior.

Step-by-step Air Link troubleshooting
- Check the bands: In your router settings, make sure 5 GHz is enabled. If the headset may be switching to 2.4 GHz, separate the network names if possible, then connect Quest 2 to 5 GHz.
- Wire the PC: Connect the gaming PC to a LAN port on the router or access point with Ethernet. Verify the PC is using that connection.
- Reposition the router: Move it into the play room or into line of sight, and raise it at least 1 m above the floor.
- Isolate mesh or channel issues: Test near the main mesh node or with a non-mesh setup, and adjust the 5 GHz channel if needed. Change one setting at a time.
- Refresh Air Link pairing: Disable Air Link in Quest settings, restart the router, PC, and headset in that order, then enable and re-pair Air Link through Meta’s setup instructions. Also check for software and driver updates and close programs that may conflict with the connection.
When to upgrade equipment—or use a cable
Consider a router or access point upgrade only if your existing equipment cannot provide a stable 5 GHz AC- or AX-capable connection where you play, or cannot be placed near the play area. When comparing options, check for 5 GHz support, AC or AX capability, Ethernet ports for the PC, the ability to use a dedicated 5 GHz network, and whether the headset can avoid mesh roaming. Meta’s guidance does not establish a minimum advertised throughput, a required router model, or a guarantee that Wi-Fi 6 alone will reduce latency or solve Air Link problems.
If the PC currently relies on Wi-Fi, an Ethernet cable of suitable length is the most direct hardware change supported by Meta’s recommendations. If local wireless changes still do not provide a reliable connection, wired Meta Quest Link is an alternative, with the trade-off that the headset is no longer wireless. The available guidance does not compare wired Link performance with Air Link.

What the published guidance does—and does not—establish
Meta’s guidance supports a practical connection setup, but it does not provide an official minimum Mbps target, latency threshold, or measured Air Link performance figure.
