To improve VALORANT performance on a low-end PC, first check whether your issue is low client FPS, uneven frame delivery, or network instability; then lower graphics quality, disable selected visual effects, and reduce background load. These steps may help, but no setting guarantees a particular FPS. Input lag is related to performance but is a separate delay through your controls, game, and display, so an FPS tweak alone may not solve it.
Identify what is actually lagging
Before changing settings, note your CPU, graphics processor (GPU), RAM, Windows version, and monitor refresh rate. In a match, distinguish between a low or fluctuating client FPS reading and networking indicators such as packet loss or high ping. Riot’s instability guide treats client FPS and network problems as different symptoms; a network issue will not be fixed by lowering graphics quality.
- Low FPS: the game is rendering fewer frames than you want.
- Uneven frame pacing: frames arrive inconsistently, which can feel like stutter even when the average FPS seems acceptable.
- Network instability: delayed or missing network updates can make play feel unresponsive, even if client FPS is steady.
- Input latency: there is a delay between an input and its visible response. The delay can involve the game and display path, not just rendering throughput.
Check your PC against Riot’s requirements
Compare your CPU, GPU, and Windows version with Riot’s published VALORANT PC specifications. Riot associates its minimum, recommended, and high-end tiers with 30 FPS, 60 FPS, and 144 FPS, respectively. These are reference tiers, not a promise that every machine at that tier will deliver the listed result in every match or configuration.
If your PC is below the listed specifications, that helps frame expectations and can inform upgrade research. It does not identify which component is limiting your particular system: that depends on your hardware and what the game is doing. If you already meet the requirements, try reversible settings changes before assuming that a hardware purchase is necessary.

Lower graphics quality and test visual effects
In VALORANT’s video or graphics settings, reduce graphics quality and test selected visual effects with them turned off. Riot lists Improve Clarity, Experimental Sharpening, Bloom, Distortion, and Cast Shadows as options to try when troubleshooting instability in its game and network instability guidance. These are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes.
- Record your current settings and note the FPS or stutter you see in a repeatable situation.
- Lower graphics quality, then test the same situation again.
- If performance is still inconsistent, turn off one or more of the named effects and compare again.
- Keep changes that improve consistency without making the game harder for you to read; restore settings that do not help.
Changing a few options at a time makes it easier to tell what affected the result. Riot also notes that lowering graphics can help older machines, while changing settings may have little effect on FPS on newer ones; the outcome depends on the system. Its explanation of VALORANT shaders and gameplay clarity is useful context for that trade-off.

Reduce background load
Close unnecessary background applications and disable recording or overlay features you do not need while playing. Riot’s optimization guidance recommends reducing unnecessary background activity and recording or overlay use. The guide is older, so treat that as a general principle rather than relying on a particular vendor control-panel recipe or menu path, which may change with software updates.
Reduce input lag separately from FPS
FPS measures how quickly the PC renders frames; input latency is the delay from an input through the game and display path. A higher frame rate can improve how often the display receives a new frame, but it does not by itself establish that every source of input delay has been addressed.

If you use supported NVIDIA hardware and VALORANT offers NVIDIA Reflex in its settings, you can test it as a latency-focused option. NVIDIA describes Reflex as coordinating game-engine work to reduce queued rendering work in supported games, including VALORANT, in its Reflex overview. Reflex is a latency feature, not an FPS booster, and availability depends on game and hardware support.
