Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For the best starting point, leave the SHIELD TV Pro’s resolution and refresh rate at their defaults, then check that the entire HDMI chain supports the video format you want. Adjust upscaling and audio only after confirming the TV, receiver, and connection path; changing a picture setting cannot fix an unsupported signal path or every playback-motion problem.
Check the HDMI chain before changing picture settings
For 4K output, NVIDIA specifies a 4K Ultra HD display (3840 × 2160), HDMI 2.0, and HDCP 2.2 support. Connect the SHIELD to a TV input that supports HDCP 2.2. Some televisions also require UHD or enhanced HDMI mode to be enabled for that input in the TV’s settings. If the signal passes through an AVR, it must support the video signal too, and NVIDIA specifies HDMI 2.0-compatible cables for both links in a 4K or HDR chain. A cable is a compatibility requirement where needed, not an image-quality upgrade by itself. See NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV Pro User Guide.
HDR10 and Dolby Vision
NVIDIA says HDR10 is selected automatically when detected. Dolby Vision modes may need to be enabled or selected under Display & Sound settings. If Dolby Vision is unavailable, check the TV input’s UHD/enhanced mode and every device in the HDMI chain before treating it as a SHIELD fault. Some Dolby Vision display modes use a lower refresh rate, which NVIDIA warns can make home-screen and app navigation feel slow.
Choose upscaling by comparing eligible content
Enhanced upscaling is enabled by default. NVIDIA’s guide places the AI option at Settings > AI upscaling; AI-Enhanced detail can be adjusted, and the built-in side-by-side demo compares Basic and AI upscaling. Try the demo and your own eligible content rather than assuming one mode always looks better.

According to NVIDIA, AI upscaling is unavailable with source video below 480p, above 30 Hz, or using RGB video; in those cases the device falls back to Enhanced. These are the guide’s stated operating conditions, not a guarantee that every streaming service or title will show a visible improvement.
Keep the default resolution and refresh rate unless troubleshooting
NVIDIA recommends the default resolution/refresh setting for the best overall experience. A manually selected non-60 Hz mode can make apps designed for 60 Hz—including Android TV navigation, games, and 60 Hz video—behave slowly. Treat custom modes as a targeted compatibility or troubleshooting change, not a general picture-quality improvement. The exact menu wording can differ with installed software; see NVIDIA’s resolution and refresh-rate guide.

When to try Match frame rate
NVIDIA labels Match frame rate (beta) experimental. Support varies by app and TV; the guide says to activate it during playback, and the setting returns to the original mode when playback stops. It is not a universal fix for motion issues, and a TV that struggles to switch refresh rates may make the experience worse. Confirm the current app behavior on your setup rather than expecting it to work across services.
Fix cropped or cut-off picture only if necessary
If the TV has an overscan or screen-fit control, use that first. For displays without their own control, NVIDIA documents Settings > Device Preferences > Display & Sound > Advanced Settings > Adjust for overscan. This changes how the image fits the screen; it does not raise the source resolution.

Choose the audio route that matches your equipment
SHIELD through an AVR for surround sound
NVIDIA’s documented surround setup is SHIELD → AVR → TV. Over HDMI, the guide lists Dolby Digital (AC3), Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC3), Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, DTS:X, and DTS Core. It says Dolby audio can be decoded or converted to the best available format, while DTS is passed through. The receiver and/or display must support the stream; unsupported decoding can result in no audio. For 4K or HDR through the AVR, confirm that it supports the required video signal and that both HDMI links meet the requirements above.
SHIELD through the TV to an older soundbar or receiver
NVIDIA documents a TV-first route—SHIELD → TV → soundbar or legacy AVR, using optical or HDMI ARC—when the audio device does not support 4K, HDR, or Dolby Vision passthrough. In this arrangement, the guide says to select Manual under Available formats and disable Dolby formats except AC3. This is a compatibility workaround with a format limitation, not the highest-fidelity choice for every setup. Check the TV and audio device manuals for ARC/eARC, optical, and supported-format behavior before changing connections.

Correct lip-sync delay in the right place
- Adjust the AVR first. Use its AV-sync or audio-delay control to correct a mismatch between sound and picture.
- If needed, use SHIELD’s sync control for an HDMI-connected receiver. NVIDIA documents the Audio video sync slider in advanced sound settings. It can advance audio by up to one second in 10 ms increments.
- Do not use that SHIELD slider for Bluetooth or headset audio. NVIDIA says it is not intended for a headset connected to the controller/remote or a Bluetooth audio device. If audio is already ahead of video, use receiver controls to delay the audio.
Tell judder from random pauses
NVIDIA describes periodic jumps or hops during a pan as judder, often associated with a mismatch between the content’s frame rate and the display refresh rate. Random pauses are stutter, a different symptom. Its troubleshooting advice is to try Ethernet or 802.11ac Wi-Fi and test the TV’s motion-processing (MEMC) setting both enabled and disabled. These are vendor recommendations; network conditions, television processing, and current app behavior vary. See NVIDIA’s video and internet performance guide.
What to verify when a component is incompatible
- Display: Confirm 4K, HDR10 or Dolby Vision support as needed, supported refresh modes, and the correct UHD/enhanced HDMI input.
- AVR: Confirm HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 compatibility for the intended video modes and decoding or passthrough for the desired audio formats.
- Soundbar: Check supported formats and ARC or optical behavior, plus whether the bar passes the required video formats.
- HDMI cable: Replace a link that does not meet the signal-path requirements; a more expensive cable is not, by itself, a promise of a better picture.
NVIDIA’s guide and menu labels may change, and app support for beta frame-rate matching can vary. Check the current SHIELD software and the manuals for the connected TV and audio equipment when a label or behavior differs.
