For smoother Steam Link streaming on Android, connect the host PC to your router with Ethernet, put your phone on 5 GHz Wi-Fi when the signal is strong, and reduce competing network traffic. Then use Steam Link’s performance overlay to see whether stutter comes from the network or from the host PC, and lower stream quality, bandwidth, or resolution as needed.
Check the connection before changing stream settings
Steam Link streams from a PC running Steam to your Android device over your local network. Valve’s Android help page says the app supports Android 5.0 and newer, recommends a 5 GHz wireless router, and instructs you to keep the phone and host PC on the same network. Wire the host PC to the router
Where possible, connect the PC running the game to the router by Ethernet and use Wi-Fi only for the phone. Valve recommends a wired host: when both PC and phone use Wi-Fi, their traffic can compete on the wireless link. If both ends are currently wireless and the stream stutters, test a wired host connection first. Valve recommends routers supporting 802.11ac; its next-best wireless choice is 802.11n on 5 GHz. Use 5 GHz if the signal reaches the phone reliably
Five-gigahertz Wi-Fi generally faces less interference from neighbors and other devices than 2.4 GHz, but its range is shorter. Use 5 GHz when your phone gets a strong, steady signal; if the phone is too far away or separated by walls, moving closer to the router may help more than selecting a band that barely reaches.

Improve the Wi-Fi path and reduce network contention
A fast internet plan does not guarantee a smooth local stream. The phone’s connection to the router, wireless interference, obstructions, and traffic from other devices can all affect Steam Link. Try these adjustments before buying new equipment:
- Move nearer to the router and reduce the number of walls or other obstructions between it and the phone.
- Place the router in an open location rather than inside a cabinet or behind large objects.
- Pause large downloads, file transfers, or other high-bandwidth activity while playing.
- If nearby Wi-Fi networks are congesting your connection, try a less congested channel. Valve also suggests testing channel width and checking for router firmware updates.
- If your router offers Quality of Service (QoS), try prioritizing the host PC or client. Steam’s network-priority setting may also help.
These are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes; the useful channel, channel width, or priority setting depends on the router and the surrounding wireless environment. Valve’s Steam Link network and connectivity guidance covers network contention and connection adjustments.

Use the performance overlay to identify the bottleneck
Before changing several settings at once, enable Steam’s streaming performance graph in the advanced streaming settings and watch it while the problem occurs. Valve identifies large, highly variable spikes in the cyan network-time line as a sign of network trouble; those spikes commonly coincide with stutter or freezing. Compare the graph before and after each change rather than relying on a single impression. Instructions are in Valve’s suggested network settings.
If the network-time line varies sharply when the picture stutters, focus first on Wi-Fi signal, interference, and competing traffic. If network timing looks stable but the stream still has a low frame rate, check the game’s frame rate and the host PC’s encoding options.

Lower stream demands until the connection is stable
In Steam Link’s streaming settings, choose Balanced or Fast if the network cannot sustain the current quality. In advanced options, lower the bandwidth limit or streaming resolution, then raise one setting at a time until stutter returns. Step back to the last stable setting. There is no single bitrate or resolution that suits every home network and device.
Reducing resolution can also help when the host struggles to encode the stream. Valve suggests trying a lower streaming resolution, such as 720p, when frame rate is low. This is a troubleshooting test, not a universal recommended setting: image detail will be lower, and the best result depends on the PC, game, phone, and network. If frame rate stays low, investigate the host PC
Valve says low streaming frame rate is usually caused by either a low frame rate in the game itself or slow encoding on the host. Check whether the game is already running at a low frame rate on the PC. Then compare the available hardware-encoding options for the PC’s installed graphics card; encoding results vary by GPU. Lowering streaming resolution is another way to test whether the host can encode more smoothly.

If network and host adjustments do not resolve the issue, temporarily close suspected monitoring, security, capture, sync, or media applications. Valve’s troubleshooting pages list some applications in these categories as potential conflicts or sources of network contention. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether closing an application actually affects the stream. Consult Valve’s network troubleshooting and low-framerate troubleshooting pages for the relevant checks.

Choose accessories only for a confirmed connection need
An Ethernet cable can connect the host PC directly to the router, which is Valve’s preferred network improvement. A USB-C Ethernet adapter may help only if the specific Android device supports wired Ethernet over USB-C; check the device maker’s compatibility information before buying one. Valve’s controller support information concerns input, not stream quality, so changing controllers is not a streaming fix.
