Start with your phone’s battery-usage screen rather than changing settings blindly; the best adjustments depend on your apps, device and software version.
1. Find what is using your battery
Open Settings > Battery and review recent battery use. On iPhone, the battery screen shows the share of battery used by each app; see Apple’s guidance for diagnosing battery drain. Galaxy phones also provide battery and background-usage controls, though the labels and paths can vary by software version; see Samsung’s Galaxy battery optimisation guidance.
Look for apps or activity that coincide with the drain you notice—for example, an app with substantial background use or a period of heavy screen use. A high-use app is not automatically a problem: navigation, messaging or health features may be doing work you rely on. Focus on activity you can reduce without losing a function you need.
2. Reduce screen power use
High brightness and a long screen timeout can contribute to battery use. Set brightness to a comfortable level, use adaptive brightness if it suits you, and choose a shorter delay before the screen turns off. The precise controls differ between phone makers and software versions. Google and Samsung both include screen brightness or timeout among practical battery adjustments: Google’s Android battery guidance and Samsung’s Galaxy instructions.

3. Restrict background activity selectively
Apps that refresh or perform work when you are not using them can contribute to drain. On iPhone, review Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn it off for apps that do not need to update in the background. Apple describes this control in its battery performance guidance.
On Galaxy phones, use the battery settings’ background-usage limits to restrict apps that do not need ongoing activity; Samsung’s instructions describe these controls. Android settings are not identical across manufacturers, so look under Battery for options with names such as background usage or app battery use. Keep background access for apps whose timely operation matters to you, such as messaging or navigation.

4. Use a power-saving mode when the tradeoff is worthwhile
When you need to stretch the current charge, turn on Low Power Mode on iPhone or Battery Saver on Android. Galaxy phones also offer a power-saving mode. These modes reduce some power-consuming activity, but the exact limits vary by device. Google warns that Android Battery Saver can restrict or turn off background activity and may delay apps, network connections and features; see Google’s explanation.
Use the mode when longer runtime matters more than immediate background updates. If delayed notifications or app activity would cause a problem, leave the mode off or adjust which apps and features are restricted where your phone allows it.

5. Account for demanding use and recent updates
High-resolution streaming, location services and demanding apps can use more power, according to Samsung. Reduce the quality or duration of streaming, or limit location access for apps that do not need it. There is no need to disable location or connectivity across the board: change only what you do not rely on.
If battery use increased just after a software update, give the phone time to finish update-related background work before treating the change as a persistent fault. Apple notes that update activity can affect battery use and thermal performance in its iPhone and iPad troubleshooting guidance.

6. Check battery health if the drain continues
If the phone still loses charge unusually quickly after you have checked its usage and adjusted avoidable activity, check battery health where your model provides that information. On supported iPhone models, Apple points users to Settings > Battery > Battery Health; refer to Apple’s battery-drain guidance for model-specific details.
A health status is useful context, not a setting that restores the capacity of a worn battery. If the phone reports a battery concern, follow the manufacturer’s service guidance for that model. Android battery-health information and service options depend on the device maker, so consult the maker’s official support instructions rather than assuming every Android phone has the same screen.

These settings are not universal across all Android phones, and even a Galaxy menu can change with software version. Google notes that options depend on the device maker; Samsung likewise qualifies its controls by software version.
