Faster satellite internet usually comes from fixing the part of the connection that is actually slow: your Wi‑Fi, a crowded household network, the satellite link, weather or obstructions, or an exhausted high-speed allowance. Test the service with every other device quiet, compare Wi‑Fi with a near-router or Ethernet test, then change video quality, background syncing and download schedules before buying equipment. A better router can improve coverage inside your home, but it cannot remove satellite latency, provider congestion or a depleted data allowance.

Why satellite internet feels slow

“Slow internet” can describe several different failures. A weak signal in a bedroom is a Wi‑Fi problem; a connection that slows every evening may be provider congestion; a sudden drop after heavy streaming may mean your priority or high-speed data is used; and a storm or blocked antenna path can interrupt the satellite link. Separating these causes prevents you from spending money on a router when the limitation is outside your home.

Likely cause Typical clue Best first action
Wi‑Fi coverage or interference Speed is good beside the gateway but poor in another room. Move the router centrally, test both Wi‑Fi bands, and consider a newer router or mesh coverage.
Too many active devices Performance falls while several people stream, game, download or back up files. Pause heavy jobs and retest with one device. All connected devices share the service speed.
Provider congestion Tests are slower at busy times even when your home network is idle. Check the provider status page and test at different times; a local router change will not remove congestion.
Weather or obstructions Rain, snow, wind or a newly grown tree coincides with dropouts. Inspect the antenna’s line of sight, weather alerts and cabling.
Exhausted priority/high-speed data The modem remains connected but slows, especially during busy periods. Check the account portal for allowance status, tokens or add-ons, and the next reset date.
Device, malware or software issue Only one computer or phone is slow, or upload activity is unexpectedly high. Update and scan that device, stop unknown processes and test another client.

Run a clean speed diagnosis

Record download, upload, latency, time, weather and whether each test used Ethernet or Wi‑Fi. Viasat specifically advises stopping all other usage for an accurate test; multiple users, router placement, peak congestion, malware and outdated devices can all change the result.

  1. Quiet the household. Pause streaming on televisions and sticks, cloud backups, game downloads, cameras and automatic updates. Disconnect or pause devices you cannot monitor.
  2. Run a baseline test. Use one current computer or phone near the gateway. Record the result rather than relying on a single number.
  3. Repeat over Ethernet if possible. A wired test bypasses most Wi‑Fi interference. If wired speed is normal but Wi‑Fi is poor, work on the home network rather than the satellite service.
  4. Compare near and far. Test beside the router and then in the room where the problem occurs. A large difference indicates coverage, walls, interference or band selection.
  5. Check the provider portal or app. Look for remaining priority/high-speed data, a deprioritization notice, outage alerts and per-device usage. HughesNet says exceeding plan data can slow service during high-traffic periods; Viasat describes slower standard data after high-speed data is consumed.
  6. Inspect the outdoor path. Look for trees, new construction or other obstructions between the antenna and sky. HughesNet identifies trees and weather disturbances as causes of interruptions, while Starlink’s troubleshooting guidance includes obstructions, weather, alerts and cable checks.
  7. Restart and inspect. Reboot the modem or gateway and the test device. Keep the gateway ventilated, reseat power and network cables, and verify that Wi‑Fi is enabled and connected to the intended network.
  8. Test at another time. A clean test early and late in the day can expose peak-time congestion. “Up to” plan speeds are not guarantees and vary with conditions.

Improve in-home speed without using more data

Put the router in the center of the usable home

Place the gateway as centrally and openly as practical, elevated and away from thick masonry, metal cabinets, appliances and other radio sources. Do not hide it in a closet or at the far edge of the house. This changes the Wi‑Fi segment only; it cannot increase the satellite plan’s capacity.

  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Separate the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks

If your gateway supports separate network names, enable both bands. Put high-bandwidth, nearby devices such as 4K televisions, consoles and computers on 5 GHz. Use 2.4 GHz for devices that are farther away or need better wall penetration, and distribute clients so one band is not overloaded. Starlink recommends assigning high-bandwidth devices to 5 GHz.

Reduce simultaneous heavy use

Every active device shares the available service speed. A 4K stream, a console download, a video call and a camera upload can make ordinary browsing appear broken even when the satellite link is healthy. Pause or schedule one of the large transfers, and retest before changing hardware.

Replace an aging router only when Wi‑Fi is the limit

HughesNet says a router older than three years may merit replacement when coverage or signal strength is poor. Choose a current dual-band router with enough coverage for your floor plan, but keep expectations realistic: it will not cure provider congestion, rain fade, an obstructed antenna or an exhausted allowance. If one gateway cannot cover the home, a properly placed mesh node or wired access point can improve room-to-room coverage.

Use Ethernet for fixed, demanding devices

Connect a desktop, work computer, television or console by Ethernet when practical. Wired links remove local radio interference and make diagnosis easier. They do not increase the satellite plan’s advertised speed, but they can deliver more of that speed consistently to the device.

Treat VPN performance as a separate case

Encryption, server distance and protocol overhead add delay and reduce throughput. HughesNet states that “VPN usage will reduce the speed of your internet service by up to 70%.” Test with the VPN off only when your security policy permits, and compare a nearby VPN endpoint with a distant one. A VPN result should not be used to judge the raw satellite connection.

Reduce the data your household consumes

Video is usually the largest controllable expense. Viasat publishes these approximate per-hour figures: 480p standard definition uses about 0.7 GB, 1080p high definition about 2.7 GB, and 4K can use up to 9 GB. Actual use varies by service, codec, scene complexity and device, but the order of magnitude explains why one television can exhaust an allowance.

Activity Practical setting Why it helps
Streaming television and movies Choose 480p or the service’s “Data Saver” setting when HD is unnecessary. Reduces each viewing hour from the multi-gigabyte HD range to roughly 0.7 GB at 480p, according to Viasat’s estimate.
Autoplay and previews Turn off autoplay, next-episode playback and video previews. Stops unplanned clips from consuming data while browsing.
Phones and tablets Disable background refresh and automatic media downloads for nonessential apps. Prevents social, photo and news apps from transferring content you did not request.
Operating-system and game updates Schedule them for a provider bonus or free window, or approve them manually. Large downloads occur when they are least likely to compete with daytime use.
Cloud storage and photos Pause continuous sync and camera uploads; run them on a schedule. Limits repeated uploads, especially when several phones share an account.
Idle televisions and streaming sticks Power down Roku, Chromecast, Fire Stick, smart TVs and similar devices when not in use. Stops idle apps, previews and updates from using the connection.

Set every streaming service deliberately

Open each service’s playback or account settings and select a lower fixed quality or data-saving mode rather than “Auto,” which can raise resolution when conditions improve. Disable autoplay on the service and in the browser or mobile app. Apply the setting to every profile and television; changing one phone does not change a family member’s television.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Download instead of repeatedly streaming

When an app supports offline viewing or music downloads, fetch content once and reuse it. Do this over a trusted connection or during your provider’s designated free period. Avoid downloading an entire season if you will watch only one episode, and delete unused offline files so automatic refreshes do not create another large transfer.

Control background traffic

Review operating-system update settings, game launchers, cloud-drive clients and photo libraries on every computer. Disable peer-to-peer update delivery where available, set metered or limited-connection modes, and schedule backups. On phones, turn off background refresh for apps that do not need real-time updates. Check upload as well as download: a camera or backup job can make interactive use slow even when download data remains.

Configure security cameras conservatively

Continuous, high-resolution camera uploads can consume substantial upstream data. HughesNet recommends limiting recording or using motion-triggered recording and warns that continuous home-security uploads are a poor fit for its service. Lower frame rate and resolution, shorten retention, and record locally when your security requirements allow it. Verify that a firmware update has not silently restored continuous cloud recording.

Use provider bonus windows and monitor allowances

Sign in to the provider app or portal at least weekly, and more often if several people stream. Identify which device or service is consuming data, note the allowance reset date and watch for a switch from priority to standard service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • HughesNet: its Bonus Zone is identified as 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. local time. Schedule operating-system updates, game downloads and backups inside that window when your plan includes it.
  • Viasat: some plans describe Free Zones. The hours and eligibility are plan-specific, so verify the current terms in your account before scheduling a large transfer.
  • Other providers: use only the hours and allowances shown for your address and plan. A “night” period is not universal, and local time matters.

Schedule jobs with a download manager, operating-system scheduler or backup application. Start a small test first and confirm that the portal classifies the transfer as bonus or free data before moving a multi-gigabyte archive.

What happens after priority or high-speed data runs out

Satellite plans can remain connected after an allowance is exhausted while applying lower priority during congestion. That is why a modem may show an internet connection even though speed has dropped sharply. HughesNet says exceeding plan data can slow service during high-traffic periods. Viasat describes slower standard data after high-speed data is used. The exact threshold, policy and restoration method depend on the plan and address.

  1. Confirm the allowance status and the time of the next billing reset in the provider portal.
  2. Stop nonessential video, updates, backups and camera uploads until the reset if possible.
  3. Compare the price of a provider data add-on or token with the cost of waiting. Viasat calls its add-on data Data Boost; HughesNet uses Tokens, but availability and current pricing are plan- and geography-specific.
  4. After an add-on is applied or the allowance resets, repeat the clean wired or near-router test. Do not judge the result while household traffic is still running.

Buying a faster router cannot restore provider priority. Likewise, lowering video quality saves future data but does not reverse an allowance already consumed.

Weather, obstructions and satellite limits

Satellite signals travel a long distance between your antenna and the spacecraft, so heavy rain, snow or other weather can weaken or interrupt service. Trees and structures that enter the line of sight can produce recurring dropouts, especially as vegetation grows. Check the antenna view, outdoor connectors and provider alerts before changing indoor equipment. If an obstruction is permanent, ask the installer or provider whether relocation is possible; do not remove vegetation or climb onto a roof without appropriate safety measures.

Latency cannot be tuned away

Latency is the time data takes to travel between you and the destination. Viasat explains that the satellite path creates higher latency than cable or DSL. The difference is most noticeable in fast-paced multiplayer games, rapid turn-based interactions and some VPN connections. A new router, Ethernet cable or lower video resolution can improve local responsiveness and throughput, but none can remove the propagation delay. Choose game modes that tolerate latency, use a nearby service region when available and avoid judging a plan solely by its advertised download figure.

How to compare satellite plans or providers

When a move or plan change is possible, compare the limits that affect your use rather than only the headline “up to” speed.

Comparison point Questions to ask
Priority or high-speed allowance How much is included, what happens after it is consumed, and when does it reset?
Congestion policy Are speeds reduced at busy times or after a threshold? Is the reduction temporary or until reset?
Latency and interactive use Will your games, VPN, voice calls and remote-work tools tolerate the provider’s typical path delay?
Weather and obstruction sensitivity Can the proposed installation location maintain a clear view, and what outage support is provided?
Upload performance Is upstream capacity sufficient for cameras, cloud backups and video calls?
Availability Is the plan offered at your exact address, and are installation constraints different there?
Add-on economics What does extra priority data cost compared with waiting for the next reset?

Exact terms, prices and availability change by address and date. Treat advertised speeds as ceilings, not guarantees; Viasat states, “Speeds are ‘up to’, not guaranteed and will vary.”

Match the symptom to the fix

Good speed beside the router, poor speed elsewhere

Keep the satellite service unchanged. Move the router centrally, use the less-congested band, add wired access coverage or replace an aging router. Retest in the problem room after each change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Every device is slow only in the evening

Run a quiet test at the same time and compare it with an off-peak result. If the wired result also falls, congestion or exhausted priority data is more likely than Wi‑Fi. Check the portal and provider alerts.

Speed dropped after a weekend of streaming

Check the allowance before buying hardware. Lower resolution, disable autoplay and pause background jobs while waiting for reset; use a token or add-on only after comparing its current cost with waiting.

Service fails during storms or when foliage is wet

Inspect the antenna path, cables and weather conditions. Repeated obstruction or weather outages require an installation or provider solution, not a faster indoor router.

Only one computer is slow

Test another device, check for malware or unwanted upload processes, install pending security updates and inspect browser extensions. If the clean device is normal, troubleshoot the affected computer rather than the satellite plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical maintenance routine

  • Run a quiet wired or near-router test whenever performance changes and keep a dated log.
  • Check the allowance dashboard weekly and identify the largest consumers.
  • Review streaming quality, autoplay, camera recording and cloud-sync settings after adding a device.
  • Keep the gateway ventilated and firmware current; inspect cables and the antenna view after severe weather.
  • Reassess the router when it is about three years old or when coverage, not satellite speed, is demonstrably limiting.
