To improve PS5 Slim cooling, give it open space, keep the side and rear vents clear, move it off long-fibre carpet, and remove dust safely. Some fan noise is normal: Sony says the fan may temporarily run faster during certain games and applications to cool the console. If the noise remains unusual or disruptive after these steps, contact PlayStation Support.
Give the console room to breathe
Sony recommends leaving at least 10 cm of free space around each side of the PS5 and keeping its side and rear ventilation openings unobstructed. The PS5 Slim CFI-20XX safety guide also says to place the console at least 10 cm from a wall. Avoid narrow shelves, enclosed cabinets, or other cramped locations that restrict airflow.
Do not place the console on long-fibre carpet, where dust can collect around the vents, and do not cover it with cloth. Keep the area around the ventilation openings clear of objects and accumulated dust. These are Sony’s setup and maintenance recommendations, not a promise of a particular temperature or noise level.
Clean dust without risking damage
Clean the exterior vents
- Turn off the PS5 Slim and disconnect its AC power cable.
- Use a low-powered vacuum around the ventilation openings to remove dust. A low-power handheld vacuum is an optional tool for this task; Sony does not specify a brand or suction rating.
- Reconnect the power cable only after cleaning is complete and the area around the vents is clear.
Clean under the covers only when needed
Sony’s CFI-20XX safety guide recommends using a handheld vacuum to remove dust under the covers. Before removing them, turn off the console, disconnect its cables, and wait for it to cool. Remove and refit the covers carefully according to the guide, and never operate the console without its covers installed.

Sony’s cited instructions do not establish opening the power supply, applying thermal paste, replacing the fan, or using compressed air as routine cleaning steps. Do not treat those procedures as ordinary maintenance.
Know what fan noise can mean
Sony says that “During some games and applications, you may find that your PlayStation®5 console’s cooling fan operates louder than usual.” The fan can temporarily run faster to cool the system more effectively. A change in fan speed during demanding use therefore does not by itself establish that the console is faulty.

Sony’s cited guidance gives no universal noise threshold, target temperature, or diagnostic test for deciding when fan noise is abnormal. It also does not show that an aftermarket stand, external fan, dust filter, or cooler will reduce noise or heat. Start with clear vents, adequate space, and safe dust removal rather than assuming an accessory is needed.
