The most effective way to improve PS5 Remote Play is to remove wireless instability from the network path: connect the PS5 to your router with Ethernet when possible. If the console or Remote Play device must use Wi‑Fi, put the client on the 5 GHz band, pause competing traffic, and measure the connection at both ends. PlayStation specifies at least 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download, and recommends 15 Mbps in each direction for best performance. If the stream still stutters, reduce Remote Play resolution and frame rate before investigating NAT or router-port problems.
What determines PS5 Remote Play quality
Remote Play is a live video-and-control stream. The PS5 captures gameplay, sends compressed video and audio through your home network (and, when applicable, the internet), while your controller input travels back to the console. A connection can therefore look fast in an internet-plan advertisement yet perform poorly for Remote Play if Wi‑Fi interference, congestion, weak signal, or packet loss causes data to arrive late or out of order.
Two separate links matter:
- PS5 to router: this is the most important local link. Ethernet is generally the most predictable; Wi‑Fi is vulnerable to interference, distance, walls, and other devices.
- Remote Play device to its network: a phone, tablet, PC, or Mac also needs a stable path. Putting only the PS5 on a fast connection does not fix a weak client-side signal.
The symptoms usually point to a different constraint:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Symptom | Likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Controls feel delayed while the picture remains clear | High latency, queueing, or competing uploads | Pause uploads/downloads and test both devices |
| Picture becomes blocky or blurry | Insufficient sustained throughput or packet loss | Move the client to 5 GHz, reduce traffic, then lower resolution |
| Video freezes briefly and catches up | Wireless interference or unstable signal | Use Ethernet for the PS5 or client; improve 5 GHz placement |
| Remote Play disconnects or cannot find the console | NAT restrictions, blocked traffic, or an interrupted connection | Check NAT type and the connection prerequisites |
These remedies are troubleshooting recommendations, not guaranteed percentage improvements. PlayStation’s public guidance gives speed thresholds and procedures, but does not publish a dated controlled test showing how much each intervention changes latency, bitrate, or image quality.

Check the connection before changing settings
Use PlayStation’s actual thresholds
PlayStation’s official Remote Play troubleshooting guidance sets a minimum of 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download. For best performance, Sony recommends at least 15 Mbps upload and 15 Mbps download. These are requirements for each direction, not a combined total. A connection that downloads at 20 Mbps but uploads at 2 Mbps does not meet the minimum.
| Measured result in each direction | What it means for Remote Play |
|---|---|
| Below 5 Mbps upload or download | Below PlayStation’s stated minimum; expect instability until the bottleneck is corrected or stream quality is reduced. |
| 5 to under 15 Mbps | Meets the minimum but leaves less headroom for other traffic and quality changes. |
| 15 Mbps or higher | Meets PlayStation’s recommendation for best performance, provided latency, signal quality, and congestion are also acceptable. |
An internet plan’s advertised maximum is not a Remote Play test. Run a speed test from the PS5 and from the device running Remote Play, preferably while the household is using the network normally. Note upload and download results separately. If either endpoint falls below the threshold, fix that endpoint rather than assuming the other one represents the whole path.
Run the PS5 test
- On the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Network.
- Open Connection Status.
- Choose Test Internet Connection.
- Record the reported upload and download speeds, NAT type, and whether the test completes without an error.
Run an equivalent test on the client device. A phone or tablet may show a different result from the PS5 even in the same room because its antenna, band selection, and signal strength differ.
Follow this repair order
1. Update both sides and verify the account
Install any available PS5 system-software update and update the Remote Play application on the client. Confirm that both ends are signed in to the same PlayStation account. An outdated app or account mismatch can look like a network failure and should be eliminated before changing router settings.
2. Stop traffic that competes with the stream
Pause game downloads, system updates, cloud backups, video uploads, torrent transfers, and high-resolution video streams on other devices. If possible, temporarily disconnect heavy Wi‑Fi users while testing. Upload saturation is particularly disruptive because a full upstream queue can delay controller traffic even when download speed appears healthy.

After pausing traffic, repeat the PS5 and client tests. If performance improves only when another device is idle, the issue is local contention rather than the advertised speed of your internet plan.
3. Wire the PS5 to the router
PlayStation recommends a wired connection for the PS5, PS4, Windows PC, or Mac when Remote Play is unavailable or unreliable. Ethernet avoids the radio interference and variable signal strength that affect Wi‑Fi. Connect the console directly to a LAN port on the router with a suitable Ethernet cable, then retest Remote Play.

A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is a practical, low-cost search term for this setup. The cable improves the local link; it cannot compensate for an inadequate ISP connection or congestion outside your home. If routing a cable is impossible, keep the console on the strongest available 5 GHz signal and continue with the wireless steps below.
4. Put the wireless client on 5 GHz
PlayStation specifically advises using 5 GHz Wi‑Fi for the Remote Play device. In the device’s Wi‑Fi settings, select the router’s 5 GHz network (often shown as a separate SSID). The band usually offers more capacity and less interference than 2.4 GHz, but its signal weakens more quickly through walls and distance.
Keep the client in a location where the 5 GHz signal is strong. If it repeatedly falls back to 2.4 GHz, separate the network names in the router settings or move closer to the router; the exact menu names vary by router. Do not assume that a newer Wi‑Fi standard alone fixes a poor signal.

5. Improve placement and reduce radio interference
- Place the router in an open, elevated location rather than inside a cabinet.
- Keep the PS5 and client away from thick walls, large appliances, and dense metal objects where practical.
- Avoid testing while the client is at the edge of 5 GHz coverage; a slightly closer position can be more stable than a nominally faster setting with a weak signal.
- Use one consistent location while comparing changes so that distance does not vary between tests.
These changes target local signal quality. They do not increase the speed purchased from an ISP, and PlayStation does not provide a universal improvement figure for any particular placement.
6. Lower Remote Play’s video demand
If the connection remains unstable after traffic and band changes, open the Remote Play app’s video-quality settings. Sony documents two fallback resolutions: Standard (540p) and Low (360p). Use Standard frame rate while troubleshooting. Start with Standard resolution; if blockiness, freezing, or disconnects continue, try Low.
A lower resolution reduces the amount of video data that must be delivered continuously. It cannot repair a missing route or a blocked connection, but it can make a marginal link usable. Change one setting at a time and play for several minutes before judging the result.
7. Check NAT when the app cannot connect
On the PS5, review the NAT type in Settings → Network → Connection Status → Test Internet Connection. NAT Type 3 can prevent Remote Play or make connections unreliable. A more restrictive NAT may be caused by the router, an upstream gateway, or the ISP’s network rather than by the PS5 itself.
PlayStation identifies UDP port 8572 for Remote Play connections. Do not change port forwarding blindly: router interfaces and network topologies differ, and an incorrect rule can create new problems. Make router changes only if you understand the equipment, or ask the router manufacturer or ISP for help. Re-run the connection test after any change and remove an experimental rule that does not solve the problem.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
8. Retest in the same order
After each change, test the PS5, test the client, launch Remote Play, and observe the same game or menu for several minutes. Keep notes of the band, whether Ethernet was used, measured speeds, resolution, frame rate, and NAT type. This prevents two simultaneous changes from hiding which one mattered.
Ethernet versus 5 GHz Wi‑Fi
| Option | Reliability | Installation effort | Coverage considerations | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ethernet to the PS5 | Generally highest because it avoids wireless interference | Requires a cable route and an available router port | Not affected by Wi‑Fi dead zones along the cable path | A permanent console setup where a cable is practical |
| 5 GHz Wi‑Fi | Good when signal is strong and the channel is not congested | Immediate; no cable installation | Shorter effective range and greater wall attenuation than 2.4 GHz | A wireless console or client close enough to the router |
| 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi | More susceptible to congestion for this use | Immediate | Often reaches farther, but distance does not guarantee a stable stream | A fallback only when 5 GHz coverage is inadequate |
Throughput and latency are separate. A more expensive internet plan cannot remove interference between your device and router. Conversely, a strong local Ethernet link cannot raise an ISP connection that remains below PlayStation’s thresholds.
When a router upgrade is justified
Consider a dual-band Wi‑Fi 6 router only when Ethernet is impractical and the existing router cannot provide a stable 5 GHz signal where you play. Treat it as a conditional upgrade, not a guaranteed Remote Play fix. First confirm that the PS5 and client meet the speed thresholds with other traffic paused. If they do not, replacing the router may not address an ISP or service-line limitation.
- Upgrade is more plausible when: the router has poor 5 GHz coverage, regularly drops the wireless link, or cannot handle normal household traffic without severe contention.
- Upgrade is less likely to help when: the PS5 test is below 5 Mbps in either direction because of the ISP, NAT Type 3 comes from an upstream network, or the client is simply too far away for any 5 GHz signal.
Do not judge a router by its maximum theoretical Wi‑Fi speed alone. Remote Play needs a sustained, low-interruption path at the locations where the PS5 and client actually sit.

Lag or delayed controls
- Pause all other uploads and downloads.
- Check upload speed on both the PS5 and client; it must reach at least 5 Mbps, with 15 Mbps recommended.
- Connect the PS5 by Ethernet if possible.
- Move the client to a strong 5 GHz signal.
- If delay persists, test at a lower resolution and Standard frame rate.
If the delay changes dramatically when another household device starts uploading, the controlling issue is contention. If it remains after both endpoints are wired or strongly connected and traffic is paused, record the test results for your ISP or router support; the official guidance does not establish a universal latency threshold.

Blurry, pixelated, or rapidly changing image
Start by stopping competing traffic and checking sustained speeds rather than the plan’s headline rate. Move the client to 5 GHz and wire the PS5. Then select Standard (540p) and Standard frame rate in the Remote Play app; use Low (360p) if the stream still cannot hold steady. Restore higher quality only after several stable sessions.
Brief freezes or repeated buffering
Freezes usually indicate interruptions rather than a single low speed reading. Check the 5 GHz signal at the exact playing position, reposition the router or client, and use Ethernet for the console. Test again with other wireless users temporarily disconnected. A speed test that looks acceptable during an idle moment does not rule out interference or contention during play.
Remote Play cannot find or connect to the PS5
- Update the PS5 and Remote Play app.
- Confirm the same PlayStation account is signed in on both ends.
- Run Settings → Network → Connection Status → Test Internet Connection and inspect NAT type.
- Investigate NAT Type 3 and UDP port 8572 with qualified router or ISP support rather than guessing at forwarding rules.
These checks address connection establishment. Lowering resolution will not fix a console that the app cannot discover or reach.

Quality changes during the session
Variable quality usually means the available path is changing. Watch for a household download beginning, a client moving between bands, or a weak 5 GHz signal. Keep the client stationary, pause background transfers, and compare a wired-console test with a wireless-console test. If only the wired test remains stable, the radio path is the differentiator.
A repeatable setup for the best chance of stable quality
- Update the PS5 and Remote Play app; sign in with the same account.
- Connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet whenever a cable route is practical.
- Connect the Remote Play device to the router’s 5 GHz SSID.
- Place the router and client to preserve a strong 5 GHz signal.
- Pause downloads, uploads, backups, and high-bandwidth streams on other devices.
- Run the PS5 test at Settings → Network → Connection Status → Test Internet Connection, then test the client.
- Confirm at least 5 Mbps upload and download at each endpoint; aim for 15 Mbps in each direction for PlayStation’s recommended performance.
- Launch Remote Play at the desired quality. If it stutters, select Standard (540p) with Standard frame rate, then Low (360p) if necessary.
- If the app cannot connect, inspect NAT type and seek informed help for UDP port 8572 or router configuration.
Keep the final settings that remain stable during normal household use, not merely during an isolated test with every other device idle.
What each fix can and cannot solve
| Fix | Addresses | Does not address |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet cable to PS5 | Wireless interference and console-side signal variation | Insufficient ISP speed, upstream NAT restrictions, or a faulty client connection |
| 5 GHz client connection | Many forms of 2.4 GHz congestion and limited capacity | Weak 5 GHz coverage, ISP limits, or blocked Remote Play traffic |
| Pausing other traffic | Local bandwidth contention and upload queueing | A permanently under-speed service or poor radio coverage |
| Lowering to 540p or 360p | Excessive stream demand on a marginal but functioning path | Account errors, NAT Type 3, or an unreachable PS5 |
| NAT and UDP 8572 investigation | Some connection-establishment failures | Blurry video caused by local congestion or weak Wi‑Fi |
The practical priority is therefore physical path first, congestion second, quality settings third, and NAT troubleshooting when the app cannot establish a session. This order gives you measurable checkpoints without assuming that any single change guarantees a particular frame rate, bitrate, or latency.
