Start by checking that audio is playing through your laptop’s built-in speakers and that neither system volume nor an individual app is turned down. Then test any available audio enhancements one at a time. These free, reversible steps can improve a particular setup, but results depend on the laptop and its audio driver; no setting can overcome every speaker’s hardware limits.
Check where the sound is going and how loud it is
Windows: select the built-in speakers
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, choose the laptop’s internal speakers. If you see a monitor, headset, dock, or other device selected instead, switch to the speakers.
- Raise the system volume to a comfortable level and make sure the output device is enabled.
- Open the Volume mixer in Sound settings and check that the app you are listening to is not muted or set much lower than the system volume.
Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the selected output and volume controls. Its guidance covers Windows 10 and 11; Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so use the current support guidance for your operating system and device.
Mac: confirm the intended output
Check the Mac’s sound settings to make sure the internal speakers are the intended output. If they produce no sound, use Apple’s troubleshooting steps for Mac internal speakers that are not working. That guidance is for diagnosing a lack of output, not a promise of improved tone.
Try audio enhancements as reversible tests
On Windows, available effects depend on the PC and its audio driver. Depending on the device, the output’s enhancement controls or a manufacturer audio app may expose options such as Bass Boost, Bass Management, Loudness Equalization, Enhanced Sound for Laptop Computers, Speaker Fill, or virtual surround. Microsoft’s reference to Windows default audio processing effects documents effect names, not guaranteed sound-quality gains.

- Open the built-in speakers’ available enhancement controls in Windows Sound settings, or open the laptop maker’s audio app if one is installed.
- Note the original settings, then change just one effect.
- Listen to familiar speech and music at a comfortable volume. Consider whether the change helps what you actually listen to, rather than assuming louder is automatically clearer.
- Keep the change only if it sounds better without harshness, pumping, distortion, or other unwanted artifacts. Otherwise, undo it before trying another option.
There is no supported universal equalizer curve or enhancement that suits every laptop. Speaker size, placement, audio processing, and driver behavior differ. Microsoft also warns that enhancements can contribute to audio problems and includes turning them off as a troubleshooting step in its Windows audio guidance.
Fix crackling, distortion, or unexpectedly quiet audio
If sound is crackling or distorted, treat it as a possible settings or driver problem rather than assuming the speakers need replacing. Microsoft identifies audio enhancements, unsupported output formats, driver problems, and stopped audio services as possible causes in its guidance for distorted or crackling Windows audio.

- Turn off enhancements temporarily and check whether the sound clears up.
- Check or reset the available output format for the selected device.
- If the problem continues, look for an appropriate audio driver from the laptop manufacturer and follow its support instructions. Avoid assuming a generic driver utility is a guaranteed fix.
- If audio is unexpectedly quiet, recheck the selected output, system volume, app volume, and mute state before changing other settings.
Change one setting at a time so you can identify what helped or made the problem worse. For persistent issues, use the manufacturer’s device-specific support rather than treating an enhancement as a repair.
What Mac accessibility audio settings can—and cannot—do
Apple’s Mac accessibility audio guide describes options including playing stereo as mono. Its frequency-adjustment control concerns background sounds, and the documented settings are accessibility features—not evidence of a general-purpose equalizer for the Mac’s built-in speakers. For internal speakers that are not working, use Apple’s separate speaker troubleshooting guidance.

How to decide whether a setting is worth keeping
- Availability: Does your operating system, audio driver, or manufacturer utility offer the control?
- Use case: Does it make the speech, music, or other material you listen to easier to hear or more pleasant?
- Artifacts: Does it introduce distortion, harshness, or uneven changes in loudness? If so, turn it off.
- Reversibility: Can you restore the original state quickly? Prefer one-at-a-time tests and note what you changed.
A settings adjustment may help a particular laptop, but it cannot reliably add bass or volume beyond what its built-in speakers can physically produce. The available guidance does not establish a universal accessory, EQ setting, or quantified improvement for all models.
