The right fix depends on what is wrong: use Voice Isolation when callers hear background noise, try Wi‑Fi Calling where cellular coverage is poor, and check the microphones when your voice sounds muffled or unclear. These options address different problems; none guarantees better audio in every call.

Choose the fix that matches the problem

What you notice First step What it can address
People hear surrounding noise or struggle to hear you Turn on Voice Isolation during the call; check the microphone if the problem remains. Noise picked up by your microphone, or a blocked or faulty microphone.
Calls drop or service is poor indoors Try Wi‑Fi Calling if your carrier supports it and your Wi‑Fi works reliably. Little or no cellular coverage in a location with suitable Wi‑Fi.
You hear the other person too softly Check supported headphone settings, including Headphone Accommodations. How audio is presented to you through supported headphones.

Apple’s support guidance describes how to use these settings but does not publish a measured call-quality improvement. Results depend on the cause of the problem and, for some features, your iPhone, iOS version, carrier, region, or headphones.

Reduce background noise with Voice Isolation

Voice Isolation changes the sound sent from your microphone. Apple describes it as a mode that “Prioritizes your voice and blocks ambient noises.” It can help when the other person hears traffic, wind, or other sounds around you; it does not improve cellular reception.

  1. While on a supported call, swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Center.
  2. Tap the controls for the app handling the call.
  3. Under Audio & Video, choose Voice Isolation.

For phone calls, Voice Isolation requires iOS 16.4 or later and a supported iPhone XR, iPhone XS model, or later. The mode choice persists for that app until you change it. Standard uses standard voice processing. Automatic Mic Mode, available with iOS 18 or later, selects a mode according to the call; Apple gives the example of Voice Isolation for calls through the receiver and Standard for speakerphone calls. Wide Spectrum is not available for phone calls.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Try Wi‑Fi Calling when cellular service is weak

Wi‑Fi Calling can route calls over Wi‑Fi when cellular coverage is little or absent, provided your carrier and region support it and the network is suitable. Availability and settings can vary by carrier and country or region.

  1. Open Settings > Cellular > Wi‑Fi Calling.
  2. If you use multiple SIMs, select the line you want to configure.
  3. Turn on Wi‑Fi Calling on This iPhone and follow any prompt to enter or confirm an emergency-services address.

When Wi‑Fi Calling is in use, Apple says the status bar shows “Wi‑Fi” with the carrier name. If the option is missing or will not activate, check carrier availability and update iOS. Then restart the iPhone, try another Wi‑Fi network, and switch Wi‑Fi Calling off and on. Reset Network Settings is a later troubleshooting step, not the first one to try.

Apple EarPods Headphones with Lightning Connector
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with Lightning Connector also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a Lightning connector and support iOS 10 or later, including iPod touch, iPad, and iPhone. Also works with iPad models with iPadOS.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Do not treat Wi‑Fi Calling as a guarantee that an emergency call will connect. Apple says emergency calls use cellular service when available and may use Wi‑Fi Calling when it is not. Location information may help responders; some carriers may use the registered address, and emergency alerts may not be received while connected to Wi‑Fi Calling. See Apple’s Wi‑Fi Calling guidance for details that may apply to your carrier and region.

Check the microphones if your voice is unclear

Voice Isolation cannot fix an obstructed opening or a hardware fault. If other people still cannot hear you clearly, remove the case, film, or screen protector and clear debris from the microphone openings. Then use Apple’s recording checks to narrow down the cause:

Adjust incoming sound for supported headphones

If you hear the other caller too softly through supported headphones, Headphone Accommodations can tune frequencies or amplify soft sounds. Open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations, turn on the feature, and enable Phone if you want the adjustment to apply to phone calls. Availability depends on the headphone model; consult Apple’s Headphone Accommodations guide for supported devices and options.

Phone Noise Cancellation is a separate setting that Apple documents for iPhone 12 and earlier. It is on by default on those models and can be turned off for comfort; it is not a universal setting on newer iPhones.

Consider a headset only for the problem it can solve

A headset may improve microphone placement or help in a noisy setting, but it cannot restore cellular coverage or repair a damaged iPhone microphone. Apple lists AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3 as compatible with Voice Isolation during calls on iPhone, iPad, or Mac, and says it can remove background sounds such as wind for the listener. Start with the built-in Voice Isolation and microphone checks before considering an accessory. See Apple’s AirPods Voice Isolation guidance.
