Windows 11 on Arm can run many x86 and x64 Windows games, but success depends on more than the game executable. The practical order is: update to Windows 11 24H2 or newer, install Arm64-capable firmware and graphics drivers, verify the title and its anti-cheat system, prefer a native Arm64 build, then tune power, background workloads and graphics settings. If a kernel anti-cheat driver or another required driver is not available for Arm64, no graphics tweak will make that installation work; cloud gaming or an x86 gaming PC is the dependable fallback.

Microsoft’s Prism technology, built into Windows 11 24H2, translates x86 instructions to Arm64 at run time and caches translated blocks. That makes emulated games possible without installing a separate emulator, while native Arm64 binaries avoid the translation cost and normally deliver the best performance.

What Windows on Arm is actually doing when a game runs

Windows 11 on Arm has two execution paths:

  • Native Arm64: The game was compiled for Arm64, so its code runs directly on the processor. This is the preferred path for frame-rate consistency, CPU efficiency and battery life.
  • Emulated x86 or x64: Windows runs the existing PC binary through its built-in emulation layer. Prism, introduced with Windows 11 24H2, uses just-in-time compilation to translate x86 instructions into Arm64 code and caches translated blocks for later use.

Microsoft describes the goal of emulation as making the Windows software ecosystem available on Arm without requiring application changes. In practice, that statement applies to user-mode code. A game can have an executable that Prism can translate and still fail because it needs a kernel-mode driver that was never compiled for Arm64.

The driver boundary is the hard limit

Graphics, input, storage, virtualization and anti-cheat components that operate in the Windows kernel must have Arm64-compatible drivers. An unsupported driver can prevent a game, peripheral or launcher from working even when the main game binary is compatible. This is why an apparently simple “will it launch?” question has two separate answers: whether the executable can run, and whether every required driver and service is supported.

Why Windows 11 24H2 matters

Prism is part of Windows 11 24H2; there is no separate Prism package to download. Microsoft’s 2025 updates added AVX and AVX2 support to Prism, expanding the set of modern applications and games that can start when those instruction sets are used. Performance still varies with the processor, graphics hardware, game engine, driver quality and laptop cooling.

Check a game before you install it

Do this compatibility check for every title, including games you already own. Compatibility can change after a Windows build, OEM driver, game patch or anti-cheat update.

  1. Confirm the Windows version. Open Settings and select Windows Update. Install available updates and restart. For the documented Prism improvements, use Windows 11 24H2 or a later build.
  2. Install the PC maker’s current drivers and firmware. Use the laptop or tablet manufacturer’s support page for firmware, chipset packages and graphics drivers. Microsoft states that hardware and game drivers must be designed for Windows 11 on Arm; an unsupported package can block software or peripherals.
  3. Look up the title on WorksOnWoA.com. Treat the listing as a starting point, then read the publisher’s current system requirements and known-issues notes. Check the exact edition and launcher, not just the franchise name.
  4. Check anti-cheat separately. A game may have an emulatable x86 or x64 executable but still refuse to start if its kernel anti-cheat driver lacks Arm64 support. Microsoft lists Easy Anti-Cheat, BattlEye, Denuvo and XIGNCODE3 among systems with Windows-on-Arm support or integration, but that support remains title-specific.
  5. Choose the delivery path. Determine whether the store offers a local Windows installation on your device. For Xbox PC app titles, local Arm installation depends on the supported-game rollout; unsupported titles may need Xbox Cloud Gaming or another PC.
Compatibility gate What to verify What failure means
Operating system Windows 11 24H2 or later for current Prism improvements Older builds may lack later emulation fixes and instruction support
Game binary Native Arm64 release, or x86/x64 executable suitable for emulation The game may be unavailable or may rely on unsupported instructions
Kernel components Arm64 graphics, device and anti-cheat drivers The executable can launch in theory but the game can still be blocked
Storefront Whether that edition can be installed locally on Arm Use a supported cloud session or an x86 gaming PC instead

Use this performance-tuning sequence

Change one group of settings at a time and test the same game scene after each change. Average FPS alone can hide stutter, so watch frame pacing and repeatable dips as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start from a clean, updated platform. Finish Windows Update, firmware, chipset and graphics-driver updates before measuring performance. Reboot after a driver or firmware installation.
  2. Connect the charger and select the performance-oriented power mode. Demanding games can expose the difference between a plugged-in performance profile and a battery-saving profile. Do not compare battery and AC results as if they were the same test.
  3. Close competing workloads. Quit unused launchers, browser tabs, recording software, overlays, RGB utilities and other background applications while diagnosing a game. These programs consume CPU time, memory bandwidth, GPU scheduling capacity or power headroom.
  4. Use a repeatable starting resolution. Begin at 1080p, or the device’s recommended native resolution if it is different. Establish whether the GPU or CPU is the limiting resource before making several changes at once.
  5. Reduce the settings that cost the most GPU time. If the GPU is saturated, lower ray tracing first, followed by shadows, reflections and volumetric effects. These changes generally preserve more image detail than dropping every setting to its minimum.
  6. Enable an in-game upscaler when available. Rendering internally at a lower resolution and reconstructing a sharper output can raise frame rate while keeping the displayed image near the panel’s native resolution.
  7. Evaluate Auto Super Resolution where it is offered. Microsoft describes Auto Super Resolution as an operating-system-level AI upscaler for DirectX games. It renders at a lower resolution to improve frame rate and reconstructs a sharper image. Availability depends on hardware and the relevant preview or Windows feature status, so do not assume every Arm PC exposes it.
  8. Retest after every meaningful change. Record the resolution, quality preset, upscaler state, power mode and driver version. If frame pacing worsens even when the average FPS rises, restore the previous setting.

Choose settings according to the bottleneck

When the GPU is the limit

A GPU-limited game shows its largest gains from lower rendering workload. Reduce ray tracing, volumetrics, reflections and shadows in that order, then lower output resolution or use an upscaler. The 2025 Microsoft figure of up to 2.3× higher ray-tracing performance applies to DXR 1.2 features on compatible hardware and supported scenarios; it is not a universal whole-game FPS result and should not be used as a promise for a particular laptop.

When the CPU is the limit

CPU-limited scenes are more sensitive to background applications and emulation overhead. Close launchers and overlays, use the plugged-in performance profile, and prefer a native Arm64 build when the developer provides one. Lowering resolution will not fix a CPU-bound scene because the processor is already the limiting component.

When translation overhead is the limit

An emulated x86 or x64 game has extra CPU work for instruction translation. Prism’s cached translated blocks and its newer AVX and AVX2 support can improve the situation, but they do not turn an emulated binary into a native one. If a native Arm64 build exists, install that edition instead of relying on the emulated release.

Native Arm64, emulated PC, cloud or x86: which path is best?

Path Launch and anti-cheat compatibility CPU execution Graphics and sustained performance Network and storefront considerations
Native Arm64 game Requires the developer to ship Arm64 code and compatible drivers; anti-cheat is still title-specific Direct Arm64 execution, with no x86 translation overhead Usually the best route on the same hardware, subject to OEM driver maturity and cooling Availability depends on the publisher and store
Emulated x86/x64 game The executable may run, but kernel anti-cheat or another driver can still block it Prism translates user-mode instructions and caches translated blocks Performance varies by processor, game engine, graphics driver and thermals Usually installed from the normal PC storefront when the title supports Windows on Arm
Cloud gaming The remote server runs the game, avoiding local Arm executable and driver requirements Remote system performs the game’s CPU work Local hardware matters less, but image quality and responsiveness depend on the connection Requires a supported service, a reliable network and a title available in that service’s catalog
Another x86 gaming PC Uses the game’s conventional PC compatibility path Runs native x86/x64 code on compatible hardware Can offer broader driver and anti-cheat coverage, depending on the model Requires access to a separate computer and the relevant storefront account

Installing Game Pass titles on an Arm PC

The Xbox PC app can install supported games locally on Windows on Arm PCs. Microsoft’s 2025 Insider rollout covered supported titles, including many PC Game Pass games, but “Game Pass” is not a guarantee that every catalog entry has a local Arm installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install or update the Xbox PC app and sign in with the account that owns the subscription or game.
  2. Open the title’s page and check whether an install option is offered on the Arm PC.
  3. Before downloading a large game, verify the title’s current Arm compatibility and anti-cheat status. A local install can still fail at launch if a required kernel component is unsupported.
  4. If local installation is not offered or the title cannot pass its driver checks, use Xbox Cloud Gaming where the game and subscription support it, or play on an x86 system.

Steam and other PC stores should be treated the same way: the presence of a Windows download does not prove that the game’s drivers, anti-cheat or launcher support Windows on Arm.

Anti-cheat and driver failures: symptoms and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Action
The game never starts and reports an anti-cheat or driver error A kernel anti-cheat component is not available for Arm64 Check the publisher’s current support statement and WorksOnWoA listing; install updates only from the PC maker and game publisher. If Arm64 support is absent, use cloud gaming or an x86 PC.
The game launches but a controller, headset or other device is missing The device driver is not Arm64-compatible Install an Arm64 driver from the device or PC manufacturer. If none exists, the peripheral may remain unusable on that computer.
Performance changed after a Windows or game update New scheduling, graphics, emulation or anti-cheat behavior Install the latest matching firmware and graphics driver, retest with background apps closed, and recheck the title’s compatibility status.
A game uses AVX or AVX2 and previously failed to launch The older Windows build lacked the required Prism instruction support Move to Windows 11 24H2 or later, then retest. The update expands compatibility but does not guarantee that the game’s drivers or anti-cheat will work.

How to get stable results during long sessions

Thin Arm laptops and tablets can deliver good short bursts and then reduce clocks as heat and power limits accumulate. Test demanding games while plugged in, keep air intakes clear, and compare a short benchmark scene with a longer session. A setting that produces a high initial FPS but increasingly uneven frame times is not a practical improvement.

Microsoft’s 2025 gaming work addresses background workload management, power and scheduling, graphics-stack optimization and updated drivers. Those improvements arrive through Windows, firmware and driver updates rather than through a separate gaming utility, so keeping the complete platform current is part of performance tuning.

What you can and cannot conclude from compatibility claims

  • “Runs through emulation” means the user-mode executable can be translated; it does not certify anti-cheat, launchers, peripherals or every DLC component.
  • “Arm-supported anti-cheat” describes a technology integration, not a blanket approval for every game using that technology.
  • A native Arm64 build should normally be favored over an emulated build on the same device, but the game still depends on the quality of its Arm64 graphics driver and its own implementation.
  • The reported 2.3× ray-tracing figure is a DirectX feature result for compatible hardware and supported scenarios, not an independent benchmark of all Windows-on-Arm games.
  • There is no single FPS expectation for a “Snapdragon laptop.” Processor model, GPU configuration, memory, cooling, driver version, game patch and power mode all affect the result.

A practical decision tree

  1. Does the game have a native Arm64 build? Use it, then apply the normal power, background and graphics tuning steps.
  2. If not, does the x86/x64 build pass the title and anti-cheat checks? Update to Windows 11 24H2 or later and test the emulated build with current OEM drivers.
  3. Does it launch but perform poorly? Plug in the device, close competing workloads, identify whether the CPU or GPU is limiting, then lower the appropriate settings or enable an available upscaler.
  4. Does a required driver block launch? Do not spend time lowering graphics settings; wait for Arm64 support, use cloud gaming, or move the game to an x86 PC.
  5. Is local Game Pass installation unavailable? Check whether the title is supported in the Xbox PC app rollout. If not, use a supported cloud session or another compatible PC.
