To raise dress quality in Dressmaker, treat every commission as three separate jobs: get the client’s measurements right, align and cut every pattern piece correctly, and sew accurately along the guide. Community testing reports those technical elements as fit (20 points), cutting (30 points), and sewing (50 points). Those figures are not an official developer formula, but they explain why careful stitching usually has the largest effect on the quality score.
Five-star customer results require more than a technically clean dress. Your design must also satisfy the commission’s requested style, colors, materials, decorations, and budget. The reliable approach is to verify the brief first, preview the design before consuming fabric, then complete the fit, cutting, and sewing passes without rushing.
What affects quality and customer ratings?
Dressmaker is a single-player sewing simulation from Cozy Lives, published by Free Lives. Its central loop is choosing fabric, arranging and cutting pattern pieces, previewing the result on a mannequin, sewing the pieces together, adding decorations, and delivering the finished dress for reputation and coins. The official Steam description summarizes that loop: “Choose fabric, arrange and cut out your dress pattern, preview them on a mannequin and sew them together.”

A technically excellent dress can still disappoint a customer if it ignores a required color or accessory. Conversely, decorations cannot compensate for a wrong size or visibly inaccurate seams.
The community-tested technical weighting

Read the commission before choosing anything
Open the commission and capture every constraint before buying fabric. Do not rely on the headline or a single highlighted preference; the details determine whether a design is eligible for a high customer rating.
- Target quality or any stated quality threshold
- Silhouette, style cues, or occasion
- Required colors and acceptable color combinations
- Required fabric or material types
- Requested trims, accessories, or decorative elements
- Total budget and any remaining allowance after fabric
A useful habit is to keep a short requirement list visible while designing. Mark each item as mandatory, preferred, or optional. This prevents an attractive but noncompliant design from consuming the budget before you purchase a required detail.

Build the design in the sketchbook
Use the sketchbook to test a proposal before cutting. Select the silhouette, fabric, colors, and accessories, then compare the proposed design with the commission. The preview gives you a chance to remove an unsuitable option while the materials are still available.
Reserve money for mandatory details
Do not spend the entire budget on premium fabric at the start. Subtract the cost of every required color, material, trim, or accessory first, then decide how much remains for upgrades. A simpler silhouette that funds every mandatory component is safer than an elaborate design that forces you to omit one requested element.
Choose between viable designs
When two proposals both appear to satisfy the brief, compare them on three axes:

Do not choose complexity for its own sake. Extra detail is useful when the brief asks for it, but every additional component creates another opportunity for a mismatch or an inaccurate seam.
Set the client’s measurements and mannequin correctly
Fit is the first technical checkpoint. Take the client’s measurements carefully, then set the mannequin to the true values before assembling the dress. A perfect seam cannot repair a fundamentally incorrect size.

- Open the client or commission measurement view.
- Record each measurement exactly as displayed; do not round it for convenience.
- Enter those values on the mannequin.
- Check the mannequin again before placing or pinning pattern pieces.
- If a value looks inconsistent with the first pass, remeasure rather than compensating later with seam placement.
Think of the mannequin as the reference for every later decision. If it is one size too large or too small, the pattern may appear correctly assembled while the finished garment receives a poor fit result.

Cutting contributes a reported 30 points, and orientation is the critical control. Rotate each pattern piece until its grain indicator matches the requirement shown for that piece. Some pieces require a straight grain; others specify a bias cut. Treat those instructions as part of the pattern, not as optional styling guidance.
A safe placement sequence
- Place the piece on the selected fabric.
- Locate the grain or bias indicator.
- Rotate the piece until the indicator matches the required direction.
- Check that the piece lies fully on the fabric and does not overlap another planned cut.
- Only then confirm the cut.
Do this check for every piece, even when several look identical. A single misaligned panel can lower the resulting quality, and visual symmetry is not proof that the grain direction is correct.
Why bias instructions matter
A bias instruction deliberately changes the direction of the piece relative to the fabric. Do not “correct” it to a straight grain because it looks neater. The game’s cutting check evaluates the requested orientation, so a correctly followed bias indicator is the safer choice.
Preview the assembled dress before committing
After cutting, use the mannequin preview before you begin the full sewing pass. Confirm that the pieces form the intended silhouette and that the fabric estimate, colors, and visible details still fit the commission.

- Check the overall shape against the requested style.
- Look for an obviously wrong panel, orientation, or color.
- Confirm that the planned decorations are still affordable.
- Make changes now, while replacing a design is cheaper than repairing a completed garment.
The preview is not a substitute for the final quality score, but it catches design and requirement mistakes before they are locked into the sewing stage.
Sew for the highest technical return
Sewing is the largest reported component at 50 points, so deliberate control here has the greatest potential payoff. Follow the marked seam rather than trying to finish as quickly as possible.
Use the guide line as your path
- Start with the seam displayed by the game.
- Keep the machine or cursor centered on that guide.
- Reduce speed as the line approaches a curve.
- At corners, slow before the turn, make the change of direction, and then resume.
- Continue checking the guide instead of looking only at the destination.
Curves and corners expose small steering errors. A fast straight section may be easy, but carrying that speed into a turn can move the seam away from the marked path.
Use assistance when precision is the problem
If an assist option is available in your current game settings, use it when manual control repeatedly causes misses. The objective is a clean seam, not a self-imposed difficulty restriction. Practice without assistance can help you learn the path, but a customer commission is the wrong place to sacrifice quality while experimenting.
Work one seam at a time
Do not mentally combine several seams into one movement. Finish the current line, verify the result, and then begin the next. This makes it easier to identify whether a problem came from speed, a corner, or an incorrect starting position.

Add decorations only after the structure is sound
Decorations affect the customer’s brief and budget, but they cannot rescue poor fit or inaccurate stitching. Add them after the main garment is assembled and the technical work is secure.
- Use every decoration explicitly requested by the commission.
- Choose optional detail only when it supports the requested style.
- Recheck the remaining budget before confirming an accessory.
- Avoid decorative spending that displaces a mandatory material or trim.
If the customer asks for a specific embellishment, omitting it can reduce satisfaction even when the dress is technically excellent. If no such request exists, restrained detail leaves more budget and reduces unnecessary risk.
Final submission checklist
Before turning in the dress, run two separate checks. The first is technical; the second is contractual.

Only submit when both lists are complete. A high technical score does not erase a missed requirement, and a compliant design does not erase a low-quality seam.
