To brighten a dark pre-recorded clip in an OBS YouTube loop stream, add OBS’s Color Correction filter to the clip’s video source and adjust gamma, contrast, and brightness gradually while checking both shadows and highlights. There is no universal setting for dark footage: the right balance depends on the clip. For one repeating file, use a Media Source with Loop enabled; for multiple clips, use a VLC Video source with a playlist.
Choose the right source for your loop
Use OBS’s Media Source for one local video file. OBS documents support for common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. To rotate through several files, use VLC Video; VLC must be installed for that source type to appear in OBS.
- One clip: Media Source has a Loop option, which is off by default. “Restart playback when source becomes active” is on by default.
- Playlist: VLC Video supports a playlist, and Loop Playlist is on by default. Consider whether playback should restart or continue when the source becomes active or is hidden.
OBS describes these playback controls in its Media Sources documentation.
Add Color Correction to the video source
- In OBS, select the scene containing the clip and locate its Media Source or VLC Video source in the Sources list.
- Right-click the video source and choose Filters. OBS allows filters on sources as well as scenes; applying this adjustment to the clip source avoids unintentionally changing other scene elements.
- In the Filters window, add Color Correction under Effect Filters.
- Adjust gamma, contrast, and brightness in small increments. Pause on representative frames, including the darkest and brightest parts of the video, and check whether useful shadow detail becomes visible without washing out highlights or flattening the image.
- Review the clip at the actual stream output before going live. Check several scenes rather than judging the effect from one frame.
OBS calls this filter one that “Modifies the color of the Source.” The controls and their documented ranges are:

These are documented control ranges, not recommended target values. OBS does not prescribe a preset for dark footage. Start from the defaults and make restrained adjustments based on the content. The OBS Color Correction Filter guide lists the controls and says the filter is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Check the result before streaming
- Compare shadow visibility with highlight detail. A brighter image is not necessarily a better one if bright areas lose detail.
- Check whether skin, skies, lamps, and other familiar colors still look plausible across different scenes.
- If the video looks washed out or unnaturally colored, back off the changes and adjust one control at a time.
- OBS Media Source’s YUV Color Range defaults to Partial. Do not change the range just to brighten a clip; investigate a possible range mismatch first.
OBS’s Filters Guide also lists Apply LUT and Sharpen. A LUT can be used for color grading, but OBS does not say one is necessary to brighten a dark clip.

Do not confuse brightening SDR with HDR streaming
Color Correction changes a source’s appearance; it does not turn ordinary SDR footage into HDR. YouTube’s HDR guidance applies to compatible HDR content and an encoder configured for HDR. Its documentation specifies HEVC and lists OBS 30.1 as the minimum version for the described setup. YouTube also says viewers without HDR support receive SDR, and the Live Control Room preview does not display HDR colors. Check YouTube’s current HDR live streaming requirements if you are preparing an actual HDR stream; those settings are not a general fix for dark SDR video.
