The most reliable way to improve Cyberpunk 2077 screenshot performance is to benchmark first, clean up software causes, identify whether the GPU or CPU is limiting you, and then change one graphics setting at a time. Use upscaling before cutting every visual option, reserve path tracing (Ray Tracing: Overdrive) for the final capture when necessary, and treat a slow screenshot render as a different problem from low gameplay FPS.
Define the performance problem before changing settings
“Screenshot performance” can describe three different experiences:
- Interactive performance: the frame rate and frame pacing while exploring Night City or composing a Photo Mode shot.
- Capture time: how long the game takes to render and save the final image, especially with path tracing or a high output resolution.
- Image quality: detail, lighting and anti-aliasing in the finished screenshot.
These goals overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A system can feel smooth while you compose a scene and then take several seconds—or minutes—to produce a path-traced, high-resolution capture. Conversely, a game that stutters while you move through a crowded district has a frame-time problem that a slower screenshot render will not fix.
CD PROJEKT RED describes the game as both graphics- and processor-intensive and requires DirectX 12. Your best settings therefore depend on the scene, resolution, CPU, GPU, driver, game patch and whether ray tracing is active. There is no universal percentage gain from one setting or driver update.

Establish a repeatable baseline
Do not judge a change from one walk around the city. Use the built-in benchmark and record the conditions so every comparison is meaningful.
- Open the game’s benchmark from the graphics or gameplay menus and run it with your normal screenshot settings.
- Record the output resolution, preset, ray-tracing or Overdrive state, upscaler mode, frame-generation state and driver version.
- Write down the average FPS and any hitching, long pauses or uneven frame pacing you notice.
- Change one meaningful variable, then run the same benchmark again. Keep the camera path and settings identical.
- After a change that appears helpful, test the actual location and Photo Mode scene where you normally capture images. A benchmark is a controlled reference, not a guarantee for every district.
Patch 1.62 expanded benchmark reporting to include PC specifications, GPU-driver version and selected settings. If you need to report a persistent fault, CD PROJEKT RED’s troubleshooting instructions direct you to the benchmark-results folder. Keep those results with your notes instead of relying on memory.
Clear software causes before lowering image quality
Software conflicts can look like a graphics limitation. Perform this cleanup before deciding that your GPU is too slow.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Update or clean-install the graphics driver
Install the current driver for your GPU. If the problem started after an update, or a normal update did not help, use the driver installer’s clean-install option and reboot. A driver change can fix a particular crash, shader issue or stutter pattern, but it does not guarantee a specific FPS increase; results vary by GPU, driver release, game patch and failure mode.
Verify the game files
Use your launcher’s file-verification or repair command. Damaged or incomplete files can cause missing assets, repeated shader work and instability. Allow the process to finish, then restart the launcher and run the benchmark again.
Disable overlays one at a time
Temporarily turn off Discord, launcher, capture, hardware-monitoring and other in-game overlays. CD PROJEKT RED specifically identifies overlay applications and unnecessary background programs as troubleshooting targets. Disable one overlay, test, and re-enable it if it is not involved; that process tells you which component is actually affecting the game.

Reduce background contention
Close applications that consume CPU time, GPU acceleration or disk bandwidth while you benchmark. Browser video playback, recording tools, hardware monitors and large file transfers can all change the result. Do not assume a background utility is harmless simply because average FPS looks normal: it may create intermittent frame-time spikes.
Find out whether the GPU or CPU is the bottleneck
Use GPU utilization, resolution scaling and scene behavior to choose the next setting instead of changing everything at once.
Signs of a GPU limit
- GPU utilization remains close to its practical limit during the slow section.
- Lowering output resolution or selecting a more aggressive upscaler mode improves FPS noticeably.
- Turning off ray tracing or reducing its quality produces an immediate improvement.
For a GPU-limited system, start with DLSS on supported NVIDIA hardware or FSR 3 on compatible hardware. If the result is still too slow, reduce ray-tracing quality or output resolution before dismantling every other visual setting.
Signs of a CPU limit
- GPU utilization falls well below its limit while city scenes remain slow.
- Performance drops most in dense areas with many pedestrians, vehicles and simulation activity.
- Changing resolution has little effect on the measured frame rate.
Test CPU-heavy options such as crowd density and close unnecessary background applications. CD PROJEKT RED’s warning that the game is processor-intensive explains why lowering resolution cannot solve every city-scene hitch. The exact gain depends on your processor, location and patch, so benchmark each change.
When neither graph tells the whole story
Short shader-compilation pauses, asset streaming and overlays can produce a hitch without a sustained CPU or GPU limit. Compare frame-time behavior, not only the average FPS. Reproduce the same camera move after verifying files, cleaning the driver and disabling overlays; if the hitch disappears, a software cause was more likely than a missing graphics setting.

| Technology | Hardware and feature requirements | How to use it for screenshots |
|---|---|---|
| DLSS Super Resolution | Supported NVIDIA RTX hardware | Use it first when the GPU is limiting performance. Compare the reconstructed image at the target output resolution before reducing ray tracing. |
| DLSS Frame Generation | RTX 40-series card and hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling | Enable only after the rendered base is stable. Generated frames improve displayed smoothness but do not replace responsive, well-paced rendered frames. |
| DLSS 4 features | Patch 2.21 adds Multi Frame Generation for compatible RTX 50-series cards; its Transformer model supports Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction across RTX cards. | Use the feature your GPU supports, then verify image stability and frame pacing in the actual Photo Mode scene. |
| FSR 3 | Available across a broader range of hardware; FSR Frame Generation requires FSR 3 upscaling to be enabled. | Reach at least 60 rendered FPS first, use a 120 Hz-or-higher display, and enable hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling before testing frame generation. |
For a screenshot, judge the final file at its intended viewing size. A mode that raises the benchmark average may still show shimmer, ghosting or soft detail in fine geometry. If the reconstruction is unacceptable, step back one quality level or reduce ray-tracing cost rather than stacking multiple aggressive compromises.
Frame generation is a second-stage option, not a stutter cure
Frame generation inserts predicted frames between rendered frames. This can make camera movement appear smoother, but it cannot create the same input responsiveness as a strong rendered base. Severe hitching, unstable frame pacing or a very low native frame rate remains visible and can feel worse with generated frames enabled.
- First obtain a stable base frame rate with the chosen resolution, upscaler and ray-tracing mode.
- For FSR 3, meet CD PROJEKT RED’s recommended baseline of at least 60 FPS before enabling Frame Generation.
- Use a display running at 120 Hz or higher for the FSR 3 workflow and turn on hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.
- For DLSS Frame Generation, confirm that the GPU is RTX 40-series and that hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling is enabled.
- Compare camera movement, aiming and Photo Mode navigation with the feature on and off. Keep it enabled only when the smoother presentation outweighs any added latency or artifacts.
DLSS Multi Frame Generation in Patch 2.21 is a separate RTX 50-series feature. It can produce additional displayed frames, but the same rule applies: stabilize the rendered base first and inspect the final image for artifacts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConfigure ray tracing and Overdrive for the capture pass
Ray Tracing: Overdrive is path tracing, not merely a small step above conventional ray tracing. It is substantially more demanding than raster rendering and standard ray-tracing modes. CD PROJEKT RED currently recommends Overdrive on NVIDIA RTX 40-series hardware beginning with the RTX 4070 Ti and above. Its 2160p/60 FPS reference configuration uses an RTX 4080 with DLSS Frame Generation enabled.
Compose first, render last
- Start with Overdrive disabled if it makes navigation or Photo Mode composition uncomfortable.
- Choose the camera, character pose, lighting and output resolution while using a responsive setting.
- Save or note the exact composition so you can reproduce it if a setting change causes a failure.
- Enable the highest ray-tracing mode your GPU can complete reliably for the final capture.
- Take the screenshot, then return to the interactive setting for continued exploration.
Photo Mode includes an option that applies path tracing to screenshots. CD PROJEKT RED warns that higher resolution and a less powerful GPU increase capture time from a few seconds to several minutes. That delay is a render-time cost, not proof that your normal gameplay FPS has fallen by the same amount.
Choose between standard ray tracing and Overdrive
- Use standard ray tracing when you need to move through the scene, adjust the camera repeatedly or capture many images quickly.
- Use Overdrive/path tracing when the final lighting quality matters more than interactive movement and you can tolerate a slow capture.
- Use raster rendering when your priority is a stable base frame rate, quick composition and consistent frame pacing.
Lowering the output resolution can reduce capture time, while reducing ray-tracing quality lowers GPU work during both composition and rendering. Test one of these variables at a time so you know which compromise produced the result.

Set resolution and image quality for the intended output
Native resolution maximizes per-pixel detail but also maximizes GPU work. Upscaling lets you keep a high output resolution while rendering fewer internal pixels. For a final screenshot, compare images at the size where they will be viewed; inspecting a zoomed crop can exaggerate artifacts that are invisible in the delivered image.
- Keep the output resolution that matches your monitor or publication target when the GPU can sustain it.
- If the GPU is saturated, try a higher-quality upscaler mode before abandoning the target resolution.
- If capture time remains excessive, lower the output resolution for the shot or switch from Overdrive to standard ray tracing.
- Do not change resolution, upscaler, ray tracing and frame generation simultaneously; you will not know which change helped.
CD PROJEKT RED recommends enabling upscaling on cards with 16 GB or less of VRAM at 1440p or higher. Treat that as practical guidance rather than a guarantee: memory use also depends on ray tracing, texture settings, scene complexity and the rest of your configuration.
Understand the current hardware reference tiers
CD PROJEKT RED’s current requirements describe target combinations rather than a promise that every PC will achieve the same result in every scene.
| Target tier | Reference resolution and frame rate | Rendering mode and storage |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum, non-ray-traced | 1080p at 30 FPS | Standard rendering; 70 GB SSD |
| Recommended, non-ray-traced | 1080p at 60 FPS | Standard rendering; 70 GB SSD |
| Ultra, non-ray-traced | 2160p at 60 FPS | Standard rendering; 70 GB SSD |
| Minimum, ray-traced | 1080p at 30 FPS | Ray tracing; 70 GB SSD |
| Recommended, ray-traced | 1080p at 60 FPS | Ray tracing; 70 GB SSD |
| Ray Tracing: Overdrive | 2160p at 60 FPS | RTX 4080 reference configuration with DLSS Frame Generation; 70 GB NVMe |
The 2160p/60 Overdrive tier is a demanding reference point, not a requirement for ordinary screenshots. A lower-tier PC can still produce good images by composing with path tracing off, using an upscaler and enabling the expensive mode only for a slower final capture.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose storage for loading and asset streaming—not guaranteed FPS
The official requirements call for 70 GB on an SSD for the standard and ray-traced tiers, and 70 GB on an NVMe drive for the 2160p Ray Tracing: Overdrive tier. Moving an installation from a hard drive to an SSD or NVMe drive is therefore a sensible response to long loads, texture pop-in or asset-streaming pauses.
Storage cannot replace a capable GPU or CPU. An NVMe drive may improve loading and streaming behavior while leaving average FPS unchanged when the graphics processor is already saturated by ray tracing or a high output resolution. Measure the symptom you are trying to fix before buying an upgrade.

Practical setting recipes
For smooth Photo Mode composition
- Use a stable raster or standard ray-tracing mode while moving and framing the shot.
- Enable DLSS or FSR 3 upscaling if the GPU is near its limit.
- Keep frame generation off until the rendered base is stable; then test it only if your hardware and display meet the requirements.
- Disable overlays and close background applications before a long capture session.
For the highest-quality single screenshot
- Compose the scene with responsive settings.
- Switch to the highest ray-tracing mode your GPU can complete, including Overdrive if supported.
- Use the desired output resolution and allow the capture to finish, even if it takes minutes.
- Inspect the saved image for reconstruction artifacts, then repeat with a less aggressive mode if the result is not clean.
For a GPU-limited 1440p or 4K system
- Enable an appropriate upscaler before lowering every quality setting.
- Reduce ray-tracing quality or output resolution if the benchmark remains GPU-bound.
- Use frame generation only after reaching a stable base; it is not a substitute for fixing severe stutter.
For a CPU-limited dense city scene
- Keep the output resolution unchanged and observe whether lowering it changes FPS.
- Test crowd density and close background programs.
- Use the same route or benchmark run after each change so the comparison reflects CPU behavior rather than a different scene.
Troubleshoot common screenshot problems
The game is smooth until ray tracing is enabled
Ray tracing adds substantial GPU work, and Overdrive adds path tracing on top of that. Confirm GPU utilization, enable an upscaler, lower ray-tracing quality or output resolution, and reserve Overdrive for the final capture. If the base game is already unstable, do not try to hide the problem with frame generation.
Photo Mode takes minutes to save a screenshot
High output resolution and a less powerful GPU can produce capture times ranging from seconds to several minutes when path tracing is applied. This is expected behavior for a demanding capture pass. Compose with path tracing off, then enable it only for the image you intend to keep, or reduce output resolution and ray-tracing quality.
The game hitches when taking screenshots
Verify the files, clean-install the driver if appropriate, disable overlays and close unnecessary applications. Then compare a capture with path tracing off and on. If only the path-traced pass pauses, the delay is likely rendering cost; if ordinary movement also hitches, investigate CPU load, streaming and background software.
Frame generation looks smooth but feels delayed
Generated frames do not replace the responsiveness of rendered frames. Return to the base setting, raise the rendered FPS with upscaling or lower ray-tracing cost, and enable generation only after the baseline is stable.
Moving to an SSD did not raise average FPS
That result is normal when the GPU or CPU is the bottleneck. SSD or NVMe storage targets loading, asset streaming and related pauses; it is not a universal average-FPS upgrade.
Use a bottleneck-based upgrade decision
Only buy hardware after the benchmark identifies a limitation that settings cannot reasonably solve.
| Observed limitation | Most relevant response | What it will not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| GPU saturated by high resolution or ray tracing | Upscaling, lower ray-tracing mode, lower output resolution, or a faster GPU | A fixed FPS gain across all patches and scenes |
| CPU-limited crowds and city simulation | Lower crowd density, close background programs, or a faster CPU | Higher performance in every GPU-bound scene |
| Long loads or asset-streaming pauses | Move the game to an SSD or NVMe drive | Higher average FPS when rendering is the limit |
| Unstable base frame pacing | Driver/file/overlay cleanup and lower-cost settings | Frame generation fixing the underlying hitch |
An RTX 4080-class configuration is the official reference for 2160p/60 Overdrive with DLSS Frame Generation, but ordinary screenshots do not require that target. Match the purchase to your measured bottleneck and the images you actually plan to make.
