First find out whether the slowdown affects your whole internet connection or only Chromecast. If other devices are slow too, restart your router and contact your internet provider if service does not recover. If Chromecast alone struggles, focus on its Wi-Fi connection: confirm its network, update router firmware, restart both devices, improve signal and reduce wireless congestion. Ethernet can bypass a weak Wi-Fi link on supported models; mesh Wi-Fi can improve coverage. Neither can make a slow broadband service faster.
Find out whether the problem is your internet service or Chromecast’s Wi-Fi
Try browsing or streaming on another device connected to the same home internet. If several devices are slow or offline, the issue is more likely with the router, broadband service or provider than with Chromecast. Restart the router; if service remains slow or unavailable, contact your internet provider.
If other devices work normally but Chromecast buffers or its video quality changes, troubleshoot the connection between Chromecast and the router. Google notes that network availability over time and other factors can affect the resolution a device can show. A speed measurement at one moment is not a guarantee of steady streaming.
Work through the no-cost connection fixes
- Confirm the network. Make sure Chromecast is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network. Where setup or casting requires it, the phone or tablet and Chromecast must be on the same network. See Google’s Chromecast connection troubleshooting.
- Update router firmware. Install any available firmware update for your router, following its manufacturer’s instructions. Google recommends keeping router firmware current.
- Restart Chromecast and the router. Restart both after checking for updates, then try streaming again.
- Improve the signal. Move the router closer to Chromecast where practical and reduce obstructions. Keep Chromecast clear of nearby electronics, wires and cables that could interfere with its connection.
- Check wireless network load. Many devices using the Wi-Fi network at once can affect performance. If possible, pause downloads or other high-demand activity and see whether streaming improves.

Check whether Chromecast has enough bandwidth for the video
Google lists at least 20 Mbps for 4K content, alongside a 4K-capable display and supported streaming-device hardware. Google does not display a publication year for this requirement, and it is not a promise that 4K will remain stable under every household or network condition. Internet availability over time and other factors can affect streaming resolution. See Google’s Chromecast device requirements.
If you see the message “The video quality keeps changing throughout the video,” treat it as a sign to investigate connection consistency. Check whether other devices are affected, then address the local Wi-Fi link if Chromecast is the only device having trouble. The wording appears in Google’s connection troubleshooting.

Choose Ethernet or mesh only if Wi-Fi is the bottleneck
| Option | Best fit | What to check | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compatible Chromecast Ethernet adapter | Wi-Fi is unreliable and a wired path to the router is practical. | Confirm the adapter matches the exact Chromecast generation, connector and power requirements; check cable reach and setup. | It bypasses the wireless link but does not increase the broadband speed coming into your home. |
| Mesh Wi-Fi | The Chromecast location has weak wireless coverage. | Consider home size and layout, device capacity, setup and total cost. | It can extend coverage but does not fix slow internet service from your provider. |
Google says supported Chromecast devices can use Ethernet through an adapter sold separately, and recommends mesh Wi-Fi to improve coverage. Adapter compatibility depends on the model, so verify it before buying. Details are in Google’s connection troubleshooting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check Wi-Fi compatibility when setup or discovery fails
Wi-Fi band support varies by Chromecast generation. Google says first-generation Chromecast supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only; do not switch bands without checking your model and the signal available where the device is located. For other setup failures, check whether the router uses access point or client isolation, which can prevent devices on Wi-Fi from communicating. Networks that require a captive-portal sign-in, such as some public networks, are unsupported. See Google’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

These compatibility checks are especially relevant when Chromecast cannot connect, be discovered or complete setup. They are less likely to solve buffering caused by a broadband service that is slow across multiple devices.
