If Bluetooth calls sound muffled or people struggle to hear you, first check which devices your call app is using for audio input and output. Then test the connection nearby with downloaded audio, adjust fit and noise-processing settings, and—on a computer—check whether using the headset microphone is forcing a lower-fidelity Bluetooth mode.
Start by identifying which side of the call sounds poor
“Bad call quality” can mean two different problems: voices sound muffled or thin to you, or the people on the call cannot understand you. The first points toward the headphone output route or playback mode; the second points toward the selected microphone, fit, background noise, or voice-processing settings.
- You hear others poorly: verify the call app’s output device and check whether activating the headset microphone changed the Bluetooth audio mode.
- Others hear you poorly: verify the app’s input device, then check microphone placement, earbud fit, background noise, and noise suppression.
Check the call app’s input and output devices
In the call app’s audio settings, select the intended Bluetooth headphones for output and the intended microphone for input. The microphone may be the headset’s, the computer’s built-in microphone, or a separate microphone. If sound becomes poor only after joining a meeting or call, check whether the app switched devices when the call began.
Changing the input microphone can be a useful diagnostic on a computer: if playback improves when the headset microphone is not in use, the Bluetooth connection mode may be the cause. Whether the app and computer allow separate input and output devices varies.

Why Bluetooth playback can sound worse when the microphone is active
Bluetooth Classic on Windows
In Microsoft’s Windows implementation, Bluetooth Classic uses A2DP for playback without microphone capture and HFP for microphone capture, with lower-fidelity playback. A call app that activates the headset microphone can therefore change what you hear through the headphones. Microsoft Learn describes HFP audio during VoIP calls at 8 kHz or 16 kHz in this context, with concurrent audio resampled to match the endpoint; those figures describe the documented implementation, not every headset or Bluetooth device. Microsoft Learn: Bluetooth Classic audio. Zoom likewise cautions that Bluetooth headphones may provide lower-quality microphone audio in meetings: Zoom Support: Bluetooth headphones.
If the headset microphone is the bottleneck on a computer, try the computer’s built-in microphone or a separate USB microphone while keeping the headphones as output, if the app supports that arrangement. This is a possible workaround, not a guaranteed fix; behavior depends on the computer, operating system, and app.

Windows 11 LE Audio
Microphone-active stereo playback may be available on supported Windows 11 systems using Bluetooth LE Audio, but it is not a general setting for every PC or headphone. Microsoft says stereo playback during microphone use requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, a PC with integrated Bluetooth LE support, and compatible Bluetooth LE Audio headphones. If stereo glitches, Microsoft recommends trying mono for compatibility. Check the current requirements and controls in Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance.
Mac
Apple says audio quality and volume can drop when an app uses a Bluetooth headphone’s microphone. If that happens during calls, test a different microphone or output route if the app and Mac allow it. Test whether the Bluetooth connection is the problem
- Put your phone or computer within a few feet of the headphones.
- Play audio stored on the device rather than streamed audio.
- Listen for dropouts or distortion, then move away from likely wireless interference and repeat the test.
- If downloaded audio is stable but streamed audio is not, investigate the streaming service or network separately from the Bluetooth connection.
Apple recommends checking proximity and possible wireless interference when troubleshooting connection problems: Apple Support: Resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference.
Check Windows sound settings, troubleshooting, and updates
If the problem is on a Windows PC, confirm the selected Bluetooth output device in sound settings, then use the Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Check for Windows and Bluetooth driver updates as well; Microsoft identifies settings, drivers, and compatibility as possible causes of poor audio or disconnections. Adjust fit and noise processing
Reseat earbuds or adjust the headphone fit, especially if your voice sounds distant or inconsistent. Then test the call app’s noise suppression setting and the headset’s own noise-processing controls one at a time. Sony lists poor earbud fit, possible interaction between headphone and app noise suppression, and wireless interference as troubleshooting possibilities for the WF-1000XM6. Consider replacement hardware only after checking routing, connection stability, fit, and processing. For computer calls, a separate USB microphone may avoid relying on the Bluetooth headset microphone. If replacing a headset, compare voice intelligibility in noisy rooms, fit and stability, compatibility with your operating system and call apps, microphone-active playback behavior, controls, and comfort.
