On iPhone 16 and later, you can choose Spatial Audio, Stereo, or Mono; Spatial Audio footage also supports Audio Mix controls in Photos on supported devices and formats.
Choose an audio mode before recording
On iPhone 16 or later, open Settings > Camera > Record Sound and choose a mode. Apple says Spatial Audio captures more realistic, immersive video sound that can be edited later in Photos. The right choice depends on the scene and how you plan to edit it.

Apple says Spatial Audio and Stereo recordings receive automatic wind-noise reduction unless that feature is turned off. This is not a guarantee that wind or other background noise will disappear; microphone placement and the recording environment still matter. Improve the sound at capture
Move the microphone closer to the speaker
When speech is the priority, reduce the distance between the speaker and the microphone. This is a practical recording technique, not a measured guarantee: no microphone setting can ensure that every room sound or wind noise is removed. Make a short test clip and listen back before recording an important moment.

Use AirPods only when the model and app are supported
Apple says supported AirPods and AirPods Pro can serve as a microphone when recording video, but support depends on both the AirPods model and the camera app. Do not assume every AirPods generation works with every recording app. Test the exact combination you plan to use, confirm that the recording uses the AirPods microphone, and listen to the result before the shoot. Apple’s [camera sound documentation] describes the supported recording options.
Use Final Cut Camera when you need manual capture controls
Final Cut Camera is a free Apple capture app with controls including manual focus and white balance. It can help creators who want more control before editing, but it is not itself a sound-restoration tool. Available features can vary by iPhone and app version, so check current compatibility in the App Store and Apple’s [Final Cut Camera announcement].

Adjust speech and ambience in Photos
For supported Spatial Audio recordings, open the video in Photos and use Audio Mix to change how foreground speech and background ambience are rendered. Apple describes the feature as isolating speech as foreground and ambience as background, with multiple creative rendering styles for adjusting the mix. This is useful when a clip contains both a person speaking and environmental sound you want to preserve.
- Open the Spatial Audio video in the Photos app.
- Open the video’s editing controls and select Audio Mix when the option is available.
- Choose a mix or rendering style that gives speech or ambience the emphasis you want, then preview the result.
- Save the edit after checking that voices remain clear and the scene still sounds natural.
Audio Mix is not a general noise-removal switch, and Apple ties the workflow to supported iPhone generations and recording formats. Apple documents the feature beginning with iPhone 16; do not expect the same controls for footage from older iPhones or unsupported formats. Use iMovie for timeline edits and narration
Use iMovie when you need to arrange or trim audio alongside video, record a voice clip, add a sound effect, or balance music against dialogue. Its audio ducking lowers background music while dialogue is playing, helping voices remain audible in a mix.
- Open the project in iMovie and add the video to the timeline.
- Add or trim audio clips, record a voice clip, or add a sound effect as needed.
- Use audio ducking for background music beneath dialogue, then play through the edited section to check the balance.
Apple’s [iMovie audio clip guide] and [iMovie audio adjustment guide] document these editing tools. The cited documentation does not establish that every Photos Audio Mix control is preserved after importing a clip into iMovie, so treat Photos mix adjustments and iMovie timeline editing as separate stages and verify the sound after import.

Pick the workflow that fits the clip

For any workflow, record a short sample in the same room and with the same microphone and app you will use for the real clip. Check speech clarity, wind, background sounds, and whether the intended editing controls are available before relying on them.
