Is the slowdown happening on one device, over Wi-Fi throughout the home, or across the satellite connection? Start by isolating where the problem occurs and measuring it with other household internet use paused. That helps distinguish a device or Wi-Fi issue from plan data rules, congestion, weather, signal-path problems, or provider equipment.
First, identify what is affected
- Check more than one device. Restart the affected device and confirm it is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network. If only one device is slow, focus first on that device and its Wi-Fi connection. If several devices have the same problem, check the router, satellite service, account status, and weather.
- Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection if possible. Test close to the router, then use Ethernet if your router and device have compatible ports. If wired performance is normal but Wi-Fi is poor, the local wireless connection is a more likely cause. Ethernet is a diagnostic comparison, not a fix for satellite congestion, weather, or plan data limits.
Keep track of when the issue began and whether it affects one device, all Wi-Fi devices, or both wired and wireless connections.
Measure speed under useful conditions
Pause streaming, downloads, cloud backups, and other household internet use before testing. Viasat recommends stopping other internet use during a speed test and suggests Speedtest.net; use your provider’s own app or test where available. Record download and upload results, plus latency or packet loss if the test reports them. Repeat at a different time if results vary. Evening slowdowns can reflect higher network use.
Do not treat a Wi-Fi speed-test result as directly equivalent to a plan’s advertised maximum. The device, wireless link, household activity, network load, and test setup all affect the measured result. Viasat’s guidance on speed tests and common causes is available at Viasat’s slow-speed troubleshooting page.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Check plan data and time-of-day patterns
Sign in to your provider account and review data use, the plan’s allowance, and any rules for high-speed data or reduced priority. Policies vary by provider and plan, so use the current terms shown in your account rather than assuming every satellite service handles data the same way.
- HughesNet: Its support FAQ says that after a customer exceeds plan data, the connection may remain available but run more slowly during high-traffic periods until the next billing cycle. See HughesNet’s slow-or-no-connectivity FAQ.
- Viasat: Its support page describes some plans that move from high-speed data to slower standard data, with congestion potentially reducing speeds or priority further. It also describes separate priority language for Unleashed when usage is trending above typical network usage. Check the terms for your specific plan at Viasat’s slow-speed troubleshooting page.
If the issue occurs mainly at busy times or after heavy household use, data rules and network congestion are worth checking before buying equipment.

Separate Wi-Fi problems from satellite-service problems
Test near the router and compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, if available. A substantial improvement near the router or over Ethernet points toward the home Wi-Fi link rather than the satellite connection itself.
- Place the router in a central, open location instead of behind furniture or among obstacles.
- Reduce simultaneous heavy use while testing, including streaming and large downloads.
- Check device Wi-Fi settings and whether several devices are competing for the wireless connection.
- Make sure the modem is positioned with airflow. HughesNet recommends keeping its modem upright and notes that an older router can be a factor; that is a troubleshooting clue, not a universal reason to replace a router.
If your device and router have Ethernet ports, a Cat 6 Ethernet cable can help compare wired performance with Wi-Fi. It does not increase the satellite service’s available bandwidth.

Consider weather and obstructions
Note whether interruptions coincide with severe weather and look for visible changes—such as tree growth—that could obstruct the dish’s view. Do not climb onto a roof or adjust a provider-installed dish as routine troubleshooting; contact the provider about installation or alignment concerns.
HughesNet identifies weather and objects such as trees as possible causes of line-of-sight disruption. Viasat says severe thunderstorms or heavy snowstorms can temporarily interrupt service, and weather near a distant gateway can affect service even when conditions are clear at home. Heavy snow or ice on equipment can also impair reception. Viasat’s weather guidance says accumulation on an accessible antenna can be wiped off, but only attempt this if it is safely reachable; otherwise contact the provider. See Viasat’s weather-impact guidance.

- Check that the modem has power and note its status lights.
- Make sure accessible cable connections are secure.
- Restart the modem using your provider’s instructions. HughesNet’s FAQ lists unplugging the modem from the wall, waiting 10 seconds, and plugging it back in; follow the current instructions for your own equipment and service.
- After it reconnects, repeat the same speed or connectivity test so you can compare results.
A restart is different from a factory reset. Do not repeatedly factory-reset the modem or attempt dish repairs unless provider support directs you to do so.
When to contact provider support
Check your provider’s outage and support channels, then contact support if the connection remains unreliable after basic checks, if the modem reports a service fault, or if the problem affects both wired and Wi-Fi devices. HughesNet advises contacting customer care when service does not resume after weather clears or its troubleshooting steps do not restore connectivity. Viasat directs customers to its customer-care outage channel. Starlink’s indexed support guidance points customers to check obstructions and network conditions and file a support ticket when basic troubleshooting does not resolve slow speeds; its intermittent-internet guidance recommends tracking time, weather, and Wi-Fi patterns. See Starlink’s slow-speed troubleshooting page and Starlink’s intermittent-internet troubleshooting page.
When you report the issue, provide the times it happened, affected devices, whether Ethernet was tested, speed-test results, weather conditions, account data status, and any modem status lights or messages. Follow the provider’s instructions for your service and equipment.
