To import passwords into Apple’s Passwords app on a Mac, export them from your current password manager as a CSV file, then use File > Import Passwords from File in Passwords. Check the import results and delete the CSV afterward: it contains unencrypted passwords.

Before you import

In the password manager you’re leaving, export your passwords to a CSV file. The export steps vary by app, so follow that app’s own instructions. Apple documents the CSV handoff but does not specify export steps for every third-party manager.

Keep the CSV somewhere only you can access while you complete the transfer. Apple warns that exported passwords are not encrypted and are visible to anyone who can access the file.

Import the CSV in Passwords

  1. Open Passwords on your Mac.
  2. From the menu bar, choose File > Import Passwords from File.
  3. Select the CSV file you exported, then click Import.
  4. Review any passwords Passwords reports it could not import. Check important accounts in the app rather than assuming every record transferred.
  5. When the import is complete, delete the CSV file. Apple’s post-import instruction is to click Delete [filename] to protect your websites and apps.

Apple’s documented menu path and post-import security instruction are in its Passwords User Guide.

What may not transfer as expected

Existing passwords are not replaced

Apple says imported passwords “won’t replace passwords you already have in the Passwords app on your Mac.” Its guide does not explain every duplicate case, so don’t assume that matching entries will be merged or that one version will automatically win. Review important accounts after importing.

Some records may fail to import

Password formats can differ between apps, and Apple’s instructions do not promise that every CSV or record will import. Passwords lets you review entries it could not import, but Apple’s guide does not provide a complete list of CSV columns or formatting rules. If an important entry is missing, check it in the source app and add or correct it in Passwords as needed.

Apple documents some export exclusions

Apple’s Mac export guide says its password export excludes Wi-Fi passwords, group-shared passwords unless you created the group, and access to Sign in with Apple accounts. These are exclusions from Apple’s documented export; they do not establish what a particular third-party app includes in its own CSV. See Apple’s Mac password export guidance.

Passwords app or Safari?

For a password-manager CSV migration into Passwords on a Mac, use the Passwords app’s File > Import Passwords from File command. Safari also has a CSV password import route into iCloud Keychain, but it is a distinct browser workflow; Apple’s Safari guide points Mac users to Passwords for password import and export.

Does importing sync passwords to other devices?

Importing adds passwords on the Mac; syncing them across devices is a separate setting. Apple says syncing requires the same Apple Account on each device and Passwords enabled in iCloud settings. Passwords can also store passkeys and verification codes; those are separate from the CSV password migration described here. See Apple’s Passwords overview.
