You cannot import an entire Magic: The Gathering set into MTG Arena as a player. Wizards of the Coast adds sets through an official Arena client and server release. Your supported import tool is for an Arena-formatted decklist: after the client recognizes the new cards, you can import a deck containing them and craft cards you do not own with wildcards.
This distinction explains why a decklist can sometimes be imported before a set is fully playable, why new cards may appear as missing, and why a printed card list cannot install digital cards in your account.
What “import a new set” means in MTG Arena
MTG Arena has no player command that uploads a complete expansion, starter product, or tabletop collection. Set data, card images, packs, events, grants, Jumpstart content, preconstructed decks, and crafting availability are delivered by Wizards of the Coast in an official release.

What you can import
- An Arena-format decklist copied as plain text.
- A decklist containing cards from a newly released set, once Arena can recognize those card names.
- A deck that uses cards you already own, with missing cards shown for crafting in the editor.
What you cannot import
- An entire set file or complete digital card database.
- A physical booster, starter product, printed deck, or tabletop collection.
- Cards into Arena before Wizards has delivered the relevant set data through an update.
A physical list must first be converted into Arena’s expected text decklist format. Importing that text creates a deck; it does not transfer ownership of the physical cards or add them to your Arena collection.
How Wizards adds a new set to Arena
Set availability is controlled by Wizards’ release pipeline rather than by a player action. An Arena update can deliver the card definitions and other content, followed by account grants, packs, events, crafting access, or additional client changes at the announced launch.
For example, Wizards’ FINAL FANTASY patch notes described a launch-window defect: “Due to a late breaking bug, players will be unable to build decks in MTG Arena using cards from Magic: The Gathering – FINAL FANTASY until the set fully launches on June 10.” The same note said that players could still import decklists using those cards. This is why a successful import is not proof that the complete set is already available for ordinary deck construction.

Those are server- and client-side delivery operations. They are not files a player can install independently.
A related Marvel’s Spider-Man update also described a one-time grant, automatic opening of unopened Through the Omenpaths packs, replacement packs, set-collection changes, and card styles. Such changes are applied to accounts by the service. If your client is missing the update or the set has not reached its announced launch, the remedy is to update and wait for the official release rather than trying to import a whole set.

Exact procedure: import a deck containing new-set cards
Use this process when you have an Arena-format decklist in simplified text form. The list can come from any program that displays the deck in that format.
- Copy the complete decklist. Select the full Arena-format list and copy it to your computer clipboard. Do not copy a formatted web page, a screenshot, or a physical product list.
- Open MTG Arena and sign in. The import action is available after you enter the client and reach your account.
- Open the deck collection. Select Decks from the main navigation.
- Choose Import. The button is at the lower-left of the Decks screen.
- Confirm the import dialog. Arena should report a successful import. If it reports an error, recopy the complete list and retry.
- Find the generated deck. Arena names a newly imported deck Imported Deck by default. Rename it if you want a more descriptive title.
- Edit the deck. Select the deck and choose Edit Deck. Cards not in your collection are highlighted as missing.
- Craft missing cards if appropriate. Use available wildcards in the deck editor to create cards you need and are permitted to craft.
- Finish editing. Select Done when the deck contains the cards and quantities you want.
The import operation creates a decklist entry. It does not automatically open packs, grant cards, or spend wildcards. Ownership changes only when you obtain cards through the release and collection systems or craft them in the editor.

Sometimes, but only within the limits of the release state. Arena may recognize card names for decklist import before the full set launch while blocking normal deck construction. The FINAL FANTASY launch note is the documented example: importing a decklist was allowed even though building decks with those cards was disabled until June 10.
What an early import tells you
- The client can parse the card names in the copied list.
- A deck shell may be created before all set functionality is enabled.
- Missing cards can remain unavailable for ordinary editing until the announced launch.
What an early import does not tell you
- It does not mean packs, events, grants, or crafting are live.
- It does not make the cards legal in every format.
- It does not bypass a release lock or a client update.
If the deck imports but cards cannot be added manually, install the announced Arena update and wait for the set’s full launch. Do not treat a pre-launch import as a way to play the cards ahead of Wizards’ schedule.
Why cards are missing after import
Missing cards after a successful import are normally a collection issue, not a failed set installation. The importer records the requested decklist; it does not assume that your account owns every card in it.

Use wildcards in the deck editor
Open the imported deck, choose Edit Deck, and inspect the highlighted cards. If the card is craftable and you have the required wildcard, use the editor’s craft control. The card then becomes part of your Arena collection and can remain in the deck.

Check whether the card is actually enabled
During a launch window, a card can be recognized in a pasted list while normal deck construction is still blocked. If the card cannot be selected even after import, verify that the set’s announced launch has occurred and that the client is up to date.
Consider reprint ownership rules
A card that appears in a new set may be a reprint of a card name you already own. Wizards’ May 2025 collection update says deck-use copies are counted across printings. Once you have collected four copies of a card name, collecting one copy of a new printing can enable four copies of that printing for deck use, subject to Arena’s rules. Therefore, a reprint may require fewer new copies than its decklist quantity suggests.
Check the collection after the reprint-system update before spending four new wildcards. The exact result depends on the card name, your existing copies, and the rules Arena applies to that printing.
Ways to obtain cards from a new set
Importing a deck and obtaining its cards are separate decisions. The following comparison shows what each route changes and when it can work.

No player-side import route converts tabletop ownership into digital ownership. A tabletop list becomes useful only after it is represented as an Arena-format text decklist and the corresponding digital cards are available through Arena’s own systems.
Format legality and release timing
An imported deck can contain cards that Arena recognizes but that are not yet usable in the format you selected. Availability date, acquisition method, collection ownership, and format legality are separate checks.
- Availability date: Was the set merely announced, in a pre-launch recognition window, or fully launched?
- Acquisition method: Are the cards supplied by packs, events, grants, or wildcards, or are they only names in an imported list?
- Collection ownership: Does your account contain the cards, including any copies counted under reprint rules?
- Format legality: Is the card permitted in the selected Arena format at that point in the release cycle?
- Digital versus tabletop: Is the item an Arena account asset or only a physical card?
Use the deck editor and the format selector to identify the specific reason a card cannot be used. Importing solves only the text-entry problem; it does not change the other four conditions.

The Import button does nothing or shows an error
- Return to the source and copy the complete decklist again.
- Make sure the text is on the computer clipboard before opening Decks and selecting Import.
- Retry the import and confirm the success dialog.
- If it still fails, remove accidental page formatting or extra text and use a plain Arena-format list.
An error in this step concerns the list or clipboard content; it is not evidence that the whole set must be installed manually.
The deck appears, but every new card is missing
This is expected when your collection lacks those cards. Open Edit Deck and craft the missing cards with wildcards when available. Importing never grants the cards automatically.

New cards cannot be added manually
Check the announced launch date and install any pending Arena update. A pre-launch recognition window can allow import while ordinary deck building remains disabled. Wait for the full release rather than repeatedly recreating the deck.
A reprint seems to need four new copies
Review your collection after the reprint-system update. Arena may count copies across printings. If you already own a playset of the card name, collecting one copy of the new printing can enable four copies of that printing for deck use, subject to the applicable Arena rules.
A physical card list will not import
Convert the list to Arena’s simplified text format first. A booster contents list, starter product, printed deck, or tabletop inventory cannot install digital cards and cannot be pasted as though it were an Arena decklist.
A practical checklist for a new-set deck
- Confirm that Wizards has announced an Arena release and note whether the set is in a pre-launch window or fully live.
- Update the Arena client and sign in.
- Copy a complete Arena-format text decklist.
- Use Decks > Import and confirm the success message.
- Rename the generated Imported Deck entry if needed.
- Open Edit Deck and identify missing cards.
- Check existing copies of reprinted card names before crafting a full playset.
- Use wildcards only for cards that are available and legal for the format you intend to play.
- After the set’s full launch, verify that the deck can be built and queued in the selected format.
The key boundary is simple: Wizards supplies the set; you import a decklist that uses it. Any cards absent from your collection must then be obtained through the digital release, packs, events, grants, or crafting—not through a whole-set import.
