For Playwright screenshot comparisons, hide a rotating ad at capture time with a narrowly targeted stylesheet rule, or mask its locator if you want the excluded area to remain visible. Both approaches keep the ad’s changing pixels out of the comparison while letting the rest of the page remain under test.
Hide the ad with screenshot-only CSS
Playwright’s screenshot assertion documentation describes using a stylesheet to filter dynamic or volatile elements and improve screenshot determinism. Identify the smallest stable element containing the ad, then set only that element to display: none in the screenshot stylesheet.
For example, create tests/visual.css:

Choose a selector that protects nearby content
Prefer a stable, semantic or application-owned selector over a positional rectangle. Hiding a broad wrapper can conceal content or layout changes that the test should detect. If the ad occupies space and that space is part of the expected layout, consider whether removing it is appropriate: display: none removes the element from layout during capture, so surrounding content may shift.
Mask the ad when its location should stay visible
A mask excludes changing pixels from comparison while leaving a visible overlay over the matched element. This is useful when you want the screenshot to retain a clear indication of the excluded area, or when removing the element would alter the layout being checked.

});The mask covers the matched element’s bounding box with an overlay, which appears in the screenshot. Playwright’s Page API documentation describes screenshot masks. Check the captured image to confirm the mask covers the intended ad and not adjacent content.
Apply the exclusion without weakening the test
- Inspect the page. Use browser developer tools to locate the ad and determine whether a stable selector identifies only that ad.
- Choose hide or mask. Hide it when the ad should disappear from the captured image; mask it when a visible covered region better preserves context.
- Apply the change at capture time. Keep the exclusion tied to the screenshot rather than changing normal page behavior under test.
- Review the screenshot and diff. Verify the rotating pixels are excluded, nearby content is still checked, and any layout shift is acceptable.
Ads inside cross-origin or otherwise inaccessible frames need separate investigation. The cited Playwright documentation does not establish that a page-level selector or stylesheet can reliably target those elements, so do not assume a selector that works in the main document will work inside such a frame.

When Percy or Applitools is already in your workflow
Teams using visual-testing services can use their documented exclusion mechanisms rather than adding a separate native Playwright workflow. Percy documents ignore regions using selectors, XPath or explicit coordinates, and also documents temporary CSS injection. Applitools Eyes documents Playwright ignoreRegions. These are optional integrations, not prerequisites for hiding or masking an element with Playwright.
Chromatic documents Playwright snapshot integration and a review-and-approve workflow. Its cited setup documentation does not establish ad-specific ignore controls, so confirm the feature you need in the current product documentation before relying on it: Chromatic’s Playwright guide.
