Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReg-suit compares image files; its documented core configuration does not provide a per-element or per-region ignore setting. To keep a changing timestamp, ad, or live count from creating noisy diffs, stabilize or hide that content while generating the screenshot, then give the prepared image to reg-suit. Its thresholds adjust comparison sensitivity; they do not mask a chosen area. The reg-suit README describes the image-comparison workflow, and its Puppeteer demo shows screenshots being generated before comparison.
Where dynamic-content handling belongs
Reg-suit is a command-line tool for visual regression testing: it compares current images with previously published expected images and produces an HTML difference report. The documented workflow supplies current screenshots through actualDir; expected images are fetched into the working directory before comparison. The official Puppeteer example likewise generates screenshots first and then runs reg-suit.
That division matters: reg-suit starts with image files, not a live page it can query for DOM selectors. The README’s documented core settings include comparison thresholds, matching, antialias handling, concurrency, and optional x-img-diff reporting, but do not document a selector-based or rectangular region-ignore option. S3 and GCS publisher plugins store snapshot data; they do not change which pixels are compared.
Choose how to control the changing content
First decide whether the changing value is part of the behavior your visual test should verify. The narrowest, most reliable fix is usually to make the test page deterministic. If that is not feasible, prepare only the volatile element during screenshot capture.

| Approach | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed fixture data or stable test state | The application can be tested with controlled data or a dedicated test account. | Preserves the UI while removing variability in its inputs; the fixture must represent the state you intend to test. |
| Freeze the relevant clock | A timestamp or date-derived label changes between runs. | Keeps the element visible, but only works when the value is driven by a clock you can control. |
| Hide the volatile element before capture | The content itself is irrelevant to the screenshot assertion. | Can also hide a meaningful style or layout regression. Keep its space if surrounding alignment matters. |
| Replace its content before capture | The element must remain visible or retain its dimensions, but its live value is unstable. | Tests the element’s stable presentation, not the changing value. |
These are capture-workflow techniques, not reg-suit masking features. Your browser automation framework must perform the preparation before it writes the screenshot.
Prepare the screenshot before running reg-suit
- Identify the source of variability. Find the precise timestamp, rotating ad, recommendation, live count, or user-specific value that changes independently of the UI behavior under test.
- Try to stabilize the page first. Use fixed fixture data, a frozen clock, or a stable test account/state when practical. This retains more genuine UI coverage than concealing pixels.
- If needed, alter only the volatile element. In your screenshot-generation step, hide it or replace its content. Preserve the element’s layout space when its dimensions affect surrounding alignment; remove it only when that layout is not part of the test.
- Write the prepared image to the configured current-image directory. Reg-suit’s
actualDirmust point to the images you want it to compare. - Run the normal reg-suit comparison. Review the resulting HTML diff report to confirm that the intended region is stable without suppressing meaningful changes elsewhere.
The Puppeteer example in the official repository illustrates the capture-then-compare arrangement. It demonstrates the workflow, not a reg-suit masking API; apply any page preparation through the capture code you use.

Why thresholds are not region masks
Reg-suit’s thresholdRate and thresholdPixel control tolerated difference levels across a comparison. They do not mean “ignore this timestamp” or designate a rectangle. Raising a threshold can make the comparison less sensitive more broadly, potentially allowing unrelated visual changes through. If one region is noisy and the rest of the screenshot matters, control that region before image comparison rather than treating a global tolerance as an ignore rule. See the README configuration documentation for the documented options.
Keep the test useful while reducing noise
- Keep the scope narrow. Suppressing a large area can conceal real layout or styling regressions.
- Preserve geometry when appropriate. Hiding an element while retaining its space tests neighboring alignment more faithfully than removing it from layout.
- Do not mask content the test is meant to validate. A changing count may be noise in a typography test but essential in a test of count presentation.
- Choose storage separately from comparison behavior. The project lists S3 and GCS publisher integrations; select one based on existing storage and operations, not as a way to ignore dynamic pixels.
Troubleshooting noisy or misleading comparisons
The same area keeps appearing in the diff
Confirm that the value is actually controlled in the page state used by capture. If it is still live, stabilize it or target that single element in the screenshot-generation step. Then make sure the generated image in actualDir is the prepared one, rather than an earlier unmodified capture.

A threshold change hides unrelated changes
Restore a suitably sensitive global comparison setting and address the unstable content upstream. Thresholds do not provide selective exclusion, so increasing tolerance can affect pixels beyond the troublesome element.
The page layout shifts after hiding an element
Use a preparation method that preserves the element’s space, or replace its content with a stable value of comparable dimensions. Remove it from layout only if the affected positioning is intentionally outside the test.

The comparison does not reflect the screenshot you just captured
Check the configured actualDir, the capture output path, and the image files supplied to the run. Reg-suit compares those files; it does not take a fresh browser screenshot itself.
Or skip the browser setup
For an API-generated screenshot, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-call capture. Before capture it accepts cookie/consent banners and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. It does not replace a test-specific strategy for arbitrary changing content, so keep deterministic fixtures or targeted capture preparation where the visual assertion requires them.
