To assess a suspected fake, compare several independent clues: the label, software-reported identity, exact-model manufacturer support, and—only if appropriate—internal hardware markings. Treat any single clue as a lead, not an authentication test.
What can make a Blu-ray drive appear counterfeit?
A drive may be presented as a higher-end model while containing an older or different mechanism, sometimes inside the expected-looking shell and packaging. On October 1, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that RPCS3 developers had warned of drives with older mechanisms that cannot read PS3 discs, paired with higher-end enclosures and packaging and firmware that misreports the drive’s identity. The report described warning signs including misspelled labels, misaligned logos, incorrect manufacturing dates, and covered PCB markings (Tom’s Hardware).
That report is a warning, not a measure of how common counterfeits are. It also means a plausible model name—whether printed on the case or returned by software—is not conclusive proof of the hardware inside.
Which clues are useful, and what can they prove?

How to check a suspected drive safely

Record exactly what was sold
Photograph the drive label and packaging. Record the exact model and serial number, firmware revision, seller description, and purchase date. Keep the images and receipt; an attractive carton or case does not establish that the mechanism inside matches it.

Inspect the exterior before opening anything
Check for misspellings, poorly aligned logos, inconsistent model or date details, and signs of replaced labels. Tom’s Hardware reported these as warning signs. Redump also documents examples such as “CONNECOTOR” and “FORMAT|LOGO” on desktop-drive labels, and “Blu-DVD,” “The Nethelands,” “SN,” “Data Siorage,” or a misaligned LG logo on slim examples (Redump’s OmniDrive guide). These examples are clues, not an exhaustive list or proof by themselves.

Compare the software identity with model-specific information
Record the model, firmware, form factor, and any platform or chipset reported by Windows Device Manager or a reputable drive-information utility. Compare the results with documentation for the exact model. Software identity can help identify a mismatch, but a reported value can be spoofed.

Brand and mechanism do not always match: FreeMKV notes that some ASUS-branded drives use LG hardware, while a visually similar ASUS model is a rebadged Pioneer drive. It recommends checking the label or Windows Device Manager and notes that software support varies by drive family and firmware version (FreeMKV). A difference between the brand on the case and a software-reported mechanism is therefore not, by itself, proof of counterfeiting.

Check official firmware support for the exact model
Search the manufacturer’s support information for the full model name and revision, and determine whether the drive is a retail product or an OEM unit supplied through a computer maker. Follow the support route specified for that product.

Do not run an updater for a different model as a test. Pioneer says its firmware utility is not suitable for updating OEM drives and directs OEM owners to their computer maker; it also warns that improper firmware can make a drive inoperable. LG’s CH10LS20 support page says its listed update requires a genuine LG drive with that exact model name and directs OEM owners to the other manufacturer (Pioneer firmware support; LG CH10LS20 support). A utility that does not recognize a rebadged or OEM drive does not, on its own, establish that the drive is fake.

Consider internal markings only if the risk is acceptable
Opening an external drive should be a last-resort check, not the first step: Redump warns that some external-drive warranties may be voided and that these devices are not designed for easy disassembly and reassembly. If the warranty and damage risk are acceptable and you can open it competently, compare the PCB markings and layout with documentation for the exact model.

Redump’s specific examples concern half-height HLDS drives and compatibility with its OmniDrive use case. In that context, it identifies PCB codes JB8 or JB9 as compatible and JB7 or JBC5 as incompatible. For slim drives, it identifies a BU5 2019.07.31 PCB marking as compatible in the same context. It also describes plastic covering the PCB markings on both sides as a fake-drive sign. These are not universal authenticity rules for every brand, model, or intended use (Redump’s OmniDrive guide).
For those covered HLDS models, Redump says MakeMKV reporting an MT1959 chipset is high-likelihood evidence of compatibility, not a guarantee; at least one drive reporting MT1959 was still incompatible. MT1939 or no chipset identification is incompatible for the guide’s stated purpose. Apply those findings only when the specific model and use case match.

Judge the combination, then preserve evidence
Several independent mismatches—such as label errors, internals inconsistent with the claimed model, an unexpected chipset, or support information that does not fit—are a stronger reason to contact the seller or manufacturer than any one clue. Preserve photographs, packaging, receipts, and software-reported details when asking for help. A basic disc read or one matching identity field does not establish that every advertised capability is genuine.
Why date and lid shape are weak tests
Redump describes a flat lid with four dimples and a manufacture date from late 2015 onward as possible compatibility clues for its covered OmniDrive examples, but says the lid shape is not a guarantee. It calls dates the weakest evidence because a counterfeit may carry a newer date than its hardware suggests. Neither a plausible date nor a familiar lid should outweigh contradictory model-specific hardware evidence.

- Do not flash firmware from another model to investigate.
- Keep the drive, packaging, labels, receipt, and photographs unchanged while you contact the seller or the appropriate manufacturer support channel.
- Describe the precise mismatch—such as a label typo or a board code that conflicts with model-specific documentation—rather than presenting one clue as definitive proof.
- If the drive is advertised for a specific capability, assess that capability separately; appearance, reported identity, and a basic disc read do not verify all functions.
