To host a YouTube live stream giveaway, publish clear official rules before you go live, make entry free, explain exactly how and when to enter, and select and award the prize according to those rules. You—not YouTube—are responsible for running the contest. Check the laws that apply to you and your entrants as well as YouTube’s contest policies and guidelines.

Plan the giveaway before scheduling the stream

Decide the terms first, then build the livestream around them. YouTube says a contest must have official rules and that the creator is responsible for administering it and awarding prizes as described. Put the following details in writing before announcing the giveaway:

  • Organizer and eligibility: Identify who is running the contest and who may enter. Specify any age, location, or other eligibility limits that apply.
  • Prize: Describe the prize accurately and state any material conditions for receiving it.
  • Entry window and method: Give the start and closing times, time zone, and one clear way to enter. State how an eligible entry will be recognized.
  • Winner selection and notification: Explain when and how you will choose the winner, how you will contact them, and how long they have to respond. State what happens if they do not respond by the deadline.
  • Privacy: Say what personal information you collect, why you need it, and how you will use it. Collect only what is necessary and use it as disclosed.
  • Required disclosures: Include the statements YouTube requires, including that YouTube is not the sponsor and a release of YouTube from contest-related liability.

Entry must be free. Do not require a purchase, paid message, or other payment to participate. YouTube also warns creators to check local lottery laws. Applicable requirements can depend on where you and eligible entrants are located, the prize, and the contest structure; YouTube’s policy is not legal advice. See YouTube’s contest policies and guidelines.

Do not make entry conditional on actions intended to manipulate YouTube views, likes, dislikes, or subscriber counts. For example, avoid rules that require viewers to inflate those metrics as the price of entry. Your contest must not misrepresent genuine engagement.

Choose a livestream setup and check chat eligibility

YouTube lists mobile, webcam, and encoder livestreaming workflows. Choose the one suited to your equipment and format; a computer webcam is needed only if you choose the webcam workflow. YouTube’s live streaming tips state that a channel needs to be verified and must not have had livestream restrictions in the past 90 days to livestream. Check the current guidance and your channel status before promoting a stream.

If viewers will enter through live chat

Tell viewers to enter on the YouTube watch page. YouTube says live chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players. Its help page documents a limit of up to 11 messages per 30 seconds and 200 characters per message; check YouTube’s live stream information before the event in case platform limits have changed.

Check the stream’s audience setting and channel status in advance. YouTube says live chat is disabled on streams marked made for kids, so chat is not a suitable entry channel for those streams. Its livestream restrictions guidance covers this and other limitations.

If chat is not a good fit

Choose an entry method you can administer consistently and explain it in the official rules and on stream. Do not assume a third-party picker or chat-entry tool is compatible with YouTube or handles entrant data appropriately without verifying those claims yourself.

Publish rules that satisfy YouTube’s requirements

Make the official rules accessible before the entry window opens. In addition to the contest details above, YouTube requires a link to its Community Guidelines, legally required disclosures, a statement that YouTube is not the sponsor, a release of YouTube from contest-related liability, and a privacy notice that explains how collected personal data will be used. You must not imply that YouTube sponsors or endorses your giveaway without prior written consent. Review the full policy when drafting your rules; the precise legal language depends on your circumstances.

Explain the process during the livestream

At the start of the stream—and again before entries close—briefly point viewers to the rules and state the practical essentials:

  • Who is eligible to enter.
  • How to enter for free and where to do it.
  • The exact closing time and time zone.
  • How and when the winner will be selected and contacted.
  • Where to find the prize, privacy, and claim-deadline terms.

Use one repeatable method to identify eligible entries. Keep the records you need to administer the prize as promised, and do not collect more personal information than necessary. After the entry window closes, follow the published selection and notification process; do not change the terms to favor a particular entrant.

Troubleshoot common giveaway problems

Problem Likely cause What to do
Viewers cannot enter in chat They may be watching an embedded player, chat may be disabled, or the stream may be marked made for kids. Direct viewers to the YouTube watch page. Check audience settings and channel restrictions before the stream; use another entry method if chat is unavailable.
An entry instruction is unclear or gets missed The method, closing time, or eligibility terms were not stated plainly or repeated. Keep one entry method, publish complete rules, and restate the essential instructions before the entry window closes.
Chat entries are too long or arrive too quickly YouTube documents limits on message length and rate. Ask for a short, simple entry and allow enough time. Recheck YouTube’s current chat limits before the event.
The winner does not respond The rules did not explain a response deadline or what happens afterward. Set the claim deadline and next step in the rules before the giveaway, then follow that process.
The planned stream cannot go live The channel may not meet livestream eligibility requirements or may have a restriction. Check channel verification and livestream status using YouTube’s current streaming guidance before announcing the event.
