You can run a continuous YouTube Live feed from a Mumbai-region cloud VM by looping a video through FFmpeg and sending the encoded output to YouTube over RTMPS. The basic chain is video file → FFmpeg on the VM → YouTube Live. It is a self-managed setup, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service: the VM, process, source file, network path or YouTube ingest connection can fail.
This guide covers one outbound stream of prerecorded video. It also explains when a managed streaming service makes more sense, how to choose a Mumbai deployment, and what to monitor.
Choose the right streaming approach
For a single feed from a prerecorded file, FFmpeg on a VM gives you direct control over the encoder and output. A managed live-transcoding service is a different option: consider it if you need managed transcoding, multiple renditions or remote distribution. Neither approach removes the need to plan for failures.
| Approach | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg on a cloud VM | One encoded feed sent directly to YouTube | You manage the VM, process, restarts, monitoring and recovery. VM size and total cost depend on the workload and provider. |
| Managed live-transcoding service | Managed input and channel output, or needs such as transcoding and distribution | Check the service’s location, session limits and resource/output charges. Google Cloud Live Stream API has a 24-hour active-session limit; see Google Cloud’s quotas and limits. |
| StreamNeo | Keeping uploaded video live on YouTube without operating an encoder VM | Always-on looping from the cloud, any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and a free first day. |
Choose a Mumbai region and estimate the real cost
Google Cloud documents Mumbai as asia-south1 for its Live Stream API. That is evidence of API location availability, not a guarantee that every compute VM family is available there. For a VM-based encoder, confirm the specific instance family and networking in the provider console before building around that region. Google’s guidance for its managed service also identifies latency, cost, resilience and co-location with other Google Cloud resources as location considerations; an API input or channel’s location cannot be changed after creation. See Google Cloud’s location guide.

There is no single reliable monthly price for this setup without choosing a provider, VM SKU, stream duration and output bitrate. Estimate these items for your own configuration:
- VM runtime and storage for the source file.
- Outbound data transfer (egress), based on the encoded bitrate and hours streamed.
- Any managed-channel, endpoint or output charges if you use a managed service.
- Redundancy or monitoring costs if your availability needs require them.
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API pricing page describes charges that depend on region and resource/output configuration, including ongoing charges for active channels and started distribution endpoints. Those charges are not a price quote for a basic VM.
Prepare YouTube Live and the stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream’s ingestion URL and stream key from the Live Control Room. Explicitly choose the RTMPS URL; YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS setup instructions.
- Keep the key private. Do not paste it into a public script, shared log, screenshot or world-readable file. Anyone with access to it may be able to publish to your stream.
- For RTMPS, the connection carries RTMP inside TLS and uses port 443. YouTube’s protocol details are at the RTMPS ingestion guide. YouTube’s stream resource documentation describes ingestion fields at LiveStreams.
Install FFmpeg on the VM
Install FFmpeg using the package manager for the VM’s operating system. Google Cloud’s documentation gives sudo apt install ffmpeg as an installation example, but package names, availability and versions vary by image. Check the package offered by the OS you selected; Google’s example is documented in its Live Stream location documentation.
For a Debian- or Ubuntu-based image where the package is available, the example is:
sudo apt update && sudo apt install ffmpeg
Confirm the installed version with ffmpeg -version. A transcoding workload uses CPU differently from a stream that can be copied without re-encoding, so do not assume a universal VM size. Benchmark the actual source, output resolution, codec and frame rate on the chosen instance.

Set YouTube-compatible video and audio parameters
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. For H.264 1080p30, the current main table lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; match the bitrate to a reliable upload connection. Check the codec column and current table in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, since alternate renderings of that table have shown conflicting values.
- Resolution and frame rate: choose values supported by the source, encoder and available upstream bandwidth.
- Rate control: use CBR for YouTube’s recommended setup.
- Keyframes: set a 2-second interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: use AAC or MP3 and verify that the selected audio stream is present and audible.
- Testing: test with representative motion and audio, then inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages before depending on the feed.
Loop a prerecorded file with FFmpeg
The central loop option is -stream_loop -1, which asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. Use -re to read the file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. AWS’s documentation demonstrates this pattern with an RTMPS endpoint, but its example is not a YouTube-specific configuration; adapt and test it for your YouTube stream. See AWS’s FFmpeg streaming example.
A basic H.264/AAC example, with placeholders for values from your YouTube Live Control Room, is:

This illustrative command targets H.264 at 1080p30 with a 2-second GOP (60 frames at 30 fps) and the 14 Mbps recommended video bitrate listed in YouTube’s current main table for that profile. It assumes the file is compatible with the selected output dimensions and frame rate; it does not scale or pad the input. Adjust output settings to match your source, encoding capacity and YouTube’s current guidance. Replace the endpoint and key with the actual values copied from YouTube; do not use the placeholder text literally.

If the source already matches the required codec and settings, stream-copying may reduce encoding work, but it will not fix incompatible media parameters. Validate the file and test the output rather than assuming that a copy mode is suitable.
Start safely and verify the live output
- Before a long run, make a short test stream with the intended video and audio. Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate.
- Start FFmpeg and watch its output for input errors, encoder errors and upload failures.
- Check the YouTube Live Control Room for incoming video, audible audio and stream-health messages.
- Confirm that the video loops as expected at the file boundary and that audio does not disappear or become distorted.
- Only rely on the setup after the test succeeds under the VM and network conditions you plan to use.
Keep the process running and plan for failures
A shell command alone is not a 24/7 operating plan. Configure the selected operating system to start the encoder after reboot and restart it after a process crash; retain logs and monitor the VM, source-file availability, FFmpeg exit status, upload failures and YouTube stream-health alerts. A service manager such as systemd or a container supervisor can be part of that plan, but its unit, permissions and restart behavior need to be verified for your OS. Protect the stream key from world-readable configuration files and logs.

Decide what should alert an operator and how you will restore service if the VM or its network path is unavailable. A single VM and a single publishing path remain single points of failure; no reviewed source establishes a provider-neutral failover design or guaranteed availability for this setup.
Understand the 24-hour managed-service limit
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API documents a 24-hour active-session limit and says a channel may be restarted after that period. This qualification applies to that managed API, not to an FFmpeg process publishing directly from a VM. Do not infer that the API’s session limit is also a limit on direct VM publishing; equally, the absence of that documented API limit does not guarantee that a self-managed stream will stay uninterrupted. Details are in Google Cloud’s quotas and limits.

| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming stream | Check that FFmpeg is running, the RTMPS endpoint and key were copied correctly, and outbound port 443 is allowed by the VM’s network rules. |
| FFmpeg reports a connection or upload error | Check network reachability, the RTMPS URL, key validity and YouTube’s stream status. Keep the key private while correcting configuration. |
| Video arrives but stream health is poor | Check whether the VM can encode at the selected resolution and frame rate in real time, whether the source is readable, and whether upstream bandwidth can sustain the bitrate. Lower the output load if the tested VM or network cannot sustain it. |
| Audio is missing or wrong | Inspect the source’s audio streams and FFmpeg output, verify that an audio encoder is selected, and listen to a test stream before leaving it unattended. |
| The video does not loop or stops at the end | Verify that the command uses -stream_loop -1 before the input and that the input file remains available and readable. |
| The feed stops after a VM reboot or crash | Check that a process supervisor is configured for the selected OS, that it can access the source and protected key configuration, and that logs identify why FFmpeg exited. |
Check copyright and YouTube rules before going live
A technical loop does not grant rights to the video or audio. Use content you own or have permission to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies before publishing. Repeating a recording can also affect whether a channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies; do not assume that a 24/7 stream or reused recording is eligible for monetization. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance for streaming setup, and consult the current YouTube policy pages relevant to your content and monetization status.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this setup for a live camera feed?
This walkthrough is for looping a prerecorded file. A camera-based workflow needs a live video source and a capture or encoder setup appropriate to that source.
Does a Mumbai VM guarantee lower latency to YouTube?
Not by itself. The documented Mumbai location applies to Google Cloud’s Live Stream API; for a VM, confirm the compute option and test the route and stream health from the chosen deployment.
