For an eligible item listing, turn on Hide from friends in the listing’s creation or edit options. This reduces exposure to Facebook friends; it does not make the listing private or guarantee that they cannot find it.
How to turn on “Hide from friends”
- Open Facebook Marketplace and start creating an item listing, or open an existing listing to edit it.
- In the listing options, look for Hide from friends and turn it on if it appears. Facebook’s interface and feature availability can change, so the current form is the practical check. Facebook Help Center guidance, as summarized by Mamamia, describes this control for eligible item listings.
- Review any group-sharing destinations. The guide says listings posted in groups cannot be hidden from friends; turning on the control removes the listing from groups.
- Save or publish the listing, then treat it as publicly discoverable rather than confidential.
Which listings have the control?
The summarized Facebook Help Center guidance says “Hide from friends” is available for item listings, but not for apartments, homes, or vehicles. If you are creating one of those categories and do not see the control, do not assume another setting will hide it; the current listing form determines whether it is available.
What “Hide from friends” does—and does not—hide
The control is a way to reduce visibility to Facebook friends, not a private-listing setting. According to the same secondary guide’s account of Facebook help pages, listings may still be found in Marketplace browsing or search, through search engines, or by someone with a shared link. It also reports that a listing may be viewable by friends who are logged out, former friends, and friends-of-friends. Previews in Messenger or Stories may persist for a time after a link has been shared. These visibility details are reported by the guide rather than verified here against a directly retrieved Marketplace Help Center page.
Marketplace also does not make a seller anonymous. In a March 12, 2026 announcement, Meta said buyers may see profile details such as account tenure and friend count, plus a summary of Marketplace activity such as listing history, item types, and seller ratings. Meta notes that features may roll out unevenly: Meta’s Marketplace update.

Marketplace visibility and your Friends list are separate settings
Changing who can see the Friends section on your profile does not control who can see a Marketplace listing. Facebook’s Friends-section setting governs that profile section; mutual-friend information may still appear elsewhere. See Facebook’s instructions for controlling who can see your Friends section. Use the Marketplace listing control for listing exposure, when available, and profile privacy settings for profile information.
