If your 24/7 YouTube stream has no one watching chat, either arrange trusted moderator coverage or turn live chat off. YouTube’s automatic filters can hold potentially inappropriate messages, but they are imperfect and held messages stay hidden unless a moderator reviews and approves them. Super Chats are still subject to moderation, and removing one does not refund the buyer.
Choose what should happen while nobody is watching
Decide whether you are willing to leave chat open without live human coverage. The available choices have different trade-offs:

If keeping chat open matters, arrange a moderator and set safeguards before leaving the stream unattended. If nobody can cover chat and you do not want unattended messages visible, turning chat off is the clearest fallback.
Set up moderator coverage
YouTube offers standard and managing moderator roles. Standard moderators can remove messages, put users in time out, hide users, and review held messages. Managing moderators have additional controls, including the ability to change some live chat settings. They do not have access to Live Control Room or YouTube Studio, so the channel owner should configure stream and channel settings in advance. See YouTube’s live chat moderation guidance.

- Choose someone you trust to apply the channel’s rules consistently, including during quiet hours.
- Explain what warrants removing a message, timing out a user, or hiding them from the channel.
- Clarify whether the moderator should review held messages and when to leave them hidden.
- Do not imply that paying for a Super Chat guarantees that a message will stay visible or receive a reply.
Configure safeguards before unattended hours
In YouTube Studio, set automatic moderation to Basic or Strict if you want potentially inappropriate messages held for review. You can also maintain a blocked-words list and enable slow mode. YouTube documents these controls in its live chat moderation tools for computers and its moderation guidance.
- Held messages: With Basic or Strict moderation, potentially inappropriate messages are held. They remain hidden unless an owner or moderator chooses to show them.
- Blocked words: Add words or phrases that violate your channel rules. This is a filter, not a guarantee that every unwanted message will be caught.
- Slow mode: Limit how frequently viewers can send messages to make rapid chat activity easier to manage.
These settings lower exposure; they do not replace a person reviewing the conversation. YouTube cautions that “No system is perfect” in its live chat moderation documentation.

Apply the same rules to Super Chats
A paid message is still a chat message. YouTube allows Super Chats and Super Stickers to be moderated like other messages, so make your rules clear and apply them consistently. Payment does not guarantee a message will remain visible or receive a response. YouTube’s Super Chat and Super Sticker guidance says that if a Super Chat or Sticker is removed for violating YouTube policies, YouTube donates its portion of the revenue to charity.
Super Chats and Super Stickers are voluntary, non-refundable payments. Moderating or deleting one does not generate a refund for the buyer, including when a message is deleted after the live stream. Do not promise refunds for moderation decisions; see YouTube’s purchase guidance and eligibility, availability, and policy information.

Turn off live chat if you cannot provide coverage
If you do not want chat messages arriving while no one can review them, the channel owner can turn live chat off during a stream, except on Premieres. YouTube says Super Chats and Super Stickers are unavailable when live chat is off. This preserves the stream itself but removes live chat interaction and Supers for that video. Check YouTube’s live chat controls for the current computer instructions.
Understand the Super Chat revenue figure
YouTube says creators receive 70% of Supers revenue confirmed by Google. That calculation is after local sales tax and iOS App Store fees; YouTube says it currently covers transaction costs such as credit card fees. The figure is therefore not 70% of every displayed purchase amount before those deductions. Details are in YouTube’s Super Chat and Super Sticker documentation.
