Choose the handling method based on what the screenshot needs to show: keep an overlay for a faithful record of the visitor experience, dismiss it through its normal control for a clean layout capture, or narrowly mask it for a visual comparison. A browser-native JavaScript dialog needs the browser automation framework’s dialog API; a modal, cookie notice, or banner built into the page is ordinary page UI and should be handled through its controls.
Decide what the screenshot should represent
Before changing the page, define what the image is evidence of. A screenshot for a bug report or a record of the visitor experience should usually show the popup as it appeared. A layout or content regression capture may need the overlay dismissed or masked, but document that change so readers do not mistake the result for an untouched rendering.
- Faithful visitor record: leave the overlay visible and capture it.
- Clean layout capture: dismiss a predictable overlay through its intended control before capturing.
- Controlled visual comparison: mask a specific element or apply a narrowly scoped stylesheet, and note that the image was altered.
Use a viewport screenshot when the visible screen is the subject. Use a full-page screenshot when content below the fold matters; the overlay may still affect what is visible at capture time.
Identify which kind of popup is blocking the capture
Browser-native JavaScript dialogs
alert(), confirm(), prompt(), and beforeunload dialogs are browser dialogs, not elements in the page’s DOM. Handle them with the automation framework’s dialog API. Playwright documents its dialog behavior at Playwright dialogs; Selenium documents reading and resolving alerts, confirms, and prompts at Selenium WebDriver alerts.

Cookie notices, newsletter sign-up modals, promotional popups, and sticky banners are webpage UI. Find the specific visible control and decide whether the correct action is accept, reject, close, or another option. Avoid deleting broad groups of elements by CSS pattern: that can hide legitimate page content as well as the obstruction.
Dismiss predictable overlays explicitly in Playwright
When a page predictably displays an overlay, handle it in the normal test flow: wait for its stable locator and activate the intended control. This makes the action and resulting page state clear. Playwright’s overlay guidance also describes page.addLocatorHandler() for overlays that appear less predictably; see the Page API.

For example, assuming the site exposes an accessible button named “Close,” a test can close the modal before taking a viewport screenshot:

});Replace the example URL and locator with the target site’s URL and the actual accessible name or other stable locator for its control. If the page has no dialog role, assert that the known overlay locator is hidden instead. Choose the real action deliberately: accepting a consent prompt is not equivalent to rejecting it, and neither should be substituted for a close action without regard to the capture’s purpose.
When an overlay is unpredictable
A locator handler can respond when a known overlay becomes visible. It is checked before actions or assertions that require actionability; it does not run simply because an overlay appeared while the script performed no action. Do not treat it as a background watcher. Keep the handler focused on a specific overlay and an appropriate control, and retain assertions that establish the expected page state before capture.

Handle native dialogs without stalling
Playwright automatically dismisses dialogs when no page.on('dialog') listener is registered. Once a listener is registered, it must accept or dismiss each dialog; leaving it unresolved can stall the action that triggered it. Choose the response based on the dialog’s meaning and test objective, not as a blanket rule.

});Use dialog.accept() when acceptance is the intended behavior. For a prompt that is meant to receive text, pass the appropriate value to dialog.accept('text'). Selenium WebDriver offers corresponding operations to inspect dialog text, accept or dismiss alerts and confirms, and enter prompt text through its alerts API.
Mask or style an overlay only when that is the right evidence
Playwright’s screenshot API supports masking selected locators and injecting a stylesheet for the capture, as well as full-page screenshots. These are useful when the overlay should remain part of the page’s behavior but is outside the scope of a particular visual comparison. They alter what the image shows, so label or annotate the capture accordingly. See the Playwright Page API for screenshot options.

});Use a locator that identifies only the element you intend to mask. A full-page capture includes content below the fold; it does not by itself mean the popup has been dismissed. After dismissal or masking, inspect the image to confirm the relevant page content remains visible and the overlay has not returned.
Choose the capture and verify its result
- Set the objective: decide whether the image records the visitor experience, a cleaned layout, or a controlled comparison.
- Use the matching handler: resolve a native dialog with the framework API; handle page UI through its actual controls, or mask it narrowly when justified.
- Choose viewport or full page: capture the visible screen for viewport state; use full-page mode when below-the-fold content is relevant.
- Assert the state: check that a dismissed overlay is hidden, or that the chosen mask targets the expected element.
- Review the image: verify that no popup reappeared and that the capture still includes the content the test is meant to show.
- Record alterations: disclose a dismissal, mask, or injected style when the image is used as evidence or a comparison baseline.
Troubleshoot common capture failures
The click on a page control times out
The locator may not match the actual accessible name, the overlay may not have appeared yet, or another element may cover the control. Inspect the page’s accessible UI and wait for the specific locator to become visible before clicking. Avoid replacing this with an arbitrary sleep unless a genuine timing requirement is established.
The action that triggered a dialog hangs
If a Playwright dialog listener is registered, make sure every dialog reaches accept() or dismiss(). A listener that only logs the dialog leaves it unresolved and can block the triggering action.

A locator handler does not close an overlay immediately
page.addLocatorHandler() is evaluated around actions and assertions that require actionability, not as soon as the page changes. If the overlay is predictable, explicitly wait for and handle it in the main flow. If it is intermittent, ensure the script reaches an action or assertion that invokes the handler.
The screenshot still contains the overlay
Confirm that the intended control was activated and that the overlay locator is hidden before capture. A dismissal may not persist if the site shows the prompt again; inspect the resulting page state rather than assuming the click worked.
The cleaned screenshot hides real content
A broad CSS selector or mask may cover more than the popup. Target the specific overlay and inspect the capture. If the purpose is to document the visitor experience, do not remove it at all.
