When crypto dashboard data looks wrong, treat it as a data-quality problem before treating it as a market move. Keep the exchange’s timestamp and source with every value, detect stale observations by their timestamps, show missing values as missing, and rebuild interrupted feeds from a fresh snapshot or documented backfill. Exchange feeds do not share a universal freshness threshold or a single canonical price, so make the source and “as of” time visible.

Start by recording what each value represents

A number alone is not enough to diagnose a feed problem. Store the value alongside its provenance so you can distinguish an old reading from a current one and compare equivalent measurements.

  • Source: exchange or provider, endpoint or stream, and venue.
  • Instrument: exact market and quote currency, such as BTC/USD versus BTC/USDT.
  • Time: exchange event time or candle interval time, plus the time your system received it.
  • Time unit: record whether timestamps are in milliseconds, microseconds, or another unit before comparing them.
  • Measurement: trade, ticker, candle close, or derived index; these are not interchangeable.

Binance Spot REST timestamps are in milliseconds by default, and its documentation also describes requesting microseconds. Normalize units before calculating age or reconciling REST data with a stream. Binance also notes that its API is asynchronous and response delay can occur; REST data sources such as Matching Engine, Memory, and Database have differing potential delays. See the Binance Spot REST API documentation.

How to detect missing and stale data

Missing observations

Keep the expected time bucket or requested field in your internal model even when no value arrives. That lets the dashboard distinguish “no observation” from “not yet received,” “unsupported symbol,” or “feed unavailable” when the system has enough information to tell them apart. Do not replace absence with a zero price or zero volume: zero is a real value and can mislead users.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not assume every interval without a trade should become a synthetic candle. Follow the specific exchange feed’s interval semantics, and make any decision to display or omit empty intervals explicit.

Stale but nonempty values

Determine freshness from the source or interval timestamp, not from whether a field contains a value. Calculate data age using exchange time and local receive time as separate facts, then apply a threshold suited to that instrument, endpoint, update cadence, and dashboard use. The reviewed exchange documentation does not establish one correct number of seconds for every feed.

If you keep a last-known value on screen, label it as stale and show when it was observed and when your system last received an update. A Kraken Spot OHLC WebSocket snapshot can contain the last valid candle even if there were no trades in the requested interval; its documented end time helps identify that candle as old. This behavior is described in the Kraken WebSocket v1 OHLC documentation. That page is legacy API documentation, so verify the current API version before implementing against it.

What to do when a real-time feed drops updates

Monitor connection state and any heartbeat or sequence information the feed provides. A socket that is connected is not necessarily delivering complete data: a missed update can leave a local view internally inconsistent.

Plan for reconnection

Binance Spot WebSocket connections have a documented 24-hour lifetime. The server sends ping frames every 20 seconds, and its documentation says the client must promptly return a pong carrying the ping payload; failure to receive a pong within one minute results in a disconnect. Build reconnection into the client rather than assuming a connection lasts indefinitely. These are Binance Spot stream parameters and may change; check the Binance Spot WebSocket Streams documentation for the current rules.

Rebuild a Binance local order book after a sequence gap

For Binance’s documented local order-book procedure, buffer stream events, fetch a REST depth snapshot, discard buffered events already covered by the snapshot, and confirm that the first remaining event bridges the snapshot’s update ID. If a later event begins beyond the local update ID plus one, Binance says updates were missed and instructs clients to discard and rebuild the local book.

  1. Detect the sequence gap and mark the local book incomplete; do not present it as a reliable current book.
  2. Buffer incoming stream events while obtaining a new REST depth snapshot.
  3. Discard buffered events already represented by the snapshot, then apply the remaining events only if they bridge the snapshot update ID as documented.
  4. If a gap remains, discard the local book and restart the snapshot-and-stream process.
  5. Mark the book complete only after reconciliation succeeds.

This is a specific Binance order-book recovery procedure, not a universal recipe for every exchange or data type. Use the relevant feed’s documented sequence and backfill rules. Binance’s documentation states: “you have missed some events. Discard your local order book and restart the process from the beginning.”

How to handle conflicting prices and other values

First check whether the values are actually comparable. A BTC/USD spot trade, a BTC/USDT ticker, a candle close, and a derived index may all differ without any feed being broken.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Match the venue, instrument, quote currency, time interval, and measurement method.
  • Compare both event or interval time and receive time; a delayed value can differ simply because it reflects an earlier moment.
  • Keep source identity attached to every observation so a disagreement can be traced later.
  • Choose and disclose a primary source for each displayed metric, and explain how alternate sources are used.
  • Show an “as of” time. If comparable values differ beyond a tolerance your product has defined, surface the disagreement rather than blending them into a falsely precise figure.

There is no universal cross-exchange canonical price or disagreement tolerance established by the cited exchange materials. Do not imply that one venue is authoritative for every market or metric.

Poll and recover without exceeding exchange limits

Recovery requests can create a second problem if a client responds to a feed failure by polling too aggressively. Rate limits differ by exchange, endpoint, and account context; they are not interchangeable rules for all crypto APIs.

  • Binance Spot REST: for request-rate violations, Binance documents HTTP 429 and a Retry-After response header, and tells clients to back off. Continued violations can lead to HTTP 418 IP bans. Respect the header and avoid tight retry loops. Details are in the Binance Spot REST API documentation.
  • Kraken public Spot REST: its guidance says limits apply by IP, with additional currency-pair limits for Trades and OHLC. The support page, last updated October 1, 2026, says public endpoint calls at one per second or less remain within its limits; higher frequency could be restricted. This guidance is specific to Kraken public Spot REST, not a general limit for WebSocket, Futures, every endpoint, or all account classes. See Kraken’s API rate-limit guidance.

Use the applicable exchange documentation for the precise endpoint and market you call. Backoff and retry behavior should follow that source’s current guidance, not a rate copied from another service.

Make data quality visible to dashboard users

A dashboard can preserve a last-known reading without pretending it is current. Pair the value with source identity and an “as of” time, and make stale, incomplete, and unavailable states visually distinct from normal live data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Stale: a prior observation exists, but it exceeds the freshness rule used for this feed.
  • Missing: no observation is available for the requested field or interval; do not substitute a fabricated numeric value.
  • Incomplete: an interruption or sequence gap means the view is not yet reconciled.
  • Unavailable: the source or endpoint cannot currently provide data.

For a feed-selection decision, compare venue and instrument coverage, timestamp availability and precision, stream lifecycle and heartbeat behavior, sequence or backfill recovery support, REST data-source behavior, and endpoint-specific rate-limit guidance. Keep provenance with the data so later discrepancies can be explained.
