Install Office updates through the supported channel unless a specific, verified problem makes the latest version unusable. If you are considering a rollback, weigh the disruption against the security, performance, and reliability improvements you would lose—and treat reverting as a temporary troubleshooting step, not a safer default.
Why Office updates can feel like a no-win choice
Updates matter because supported Office editions receive security fixes, but an update can also cause unexpected behavior in a particular app or workflow. That is a real tradeoff, not evidence that every Office update causes problems. The right response depends on how severe the issue is, which Office edition and update channel you use, whether the problem is limited to one device or workflow, and whether your organization manages updates.
Microsoft’s guidance on reverting puts the central decision plainly: “Before reverting to an earlier version of an Office installation, weigh the severity of the issue that you’re experiencing against the benefits of having the security, performance, and reliability improvements that are included in the latest update.” Microsoft’s reversion instructions apply to Click-to-Run installations of Microsoft 365, Office 2024, and Office 2021; they are not general rollback instructions for MSI installations.
Check the issue before changing versions
First identify the affected app, device, Office edition, and update channel. Then check whether Microsoft already lists the symptom or a workaround. A problem that appears after an update may instead be a known Office issue, an installation or activation problem, an add-in or local configuration issue, or a Microsoft 365 service incident.

- Compact design saves desktop space and allows for close, comfortable mouse position.
- Optimized key spacing and key travel for fast, fluid typing.
- Sleek, low-profile design complements any workspace.
- Expressive input key[2] for quick access to emojis, symbols, and more.
- Connect up to 3 devices and switch seamlessly between them[1].
- Review recent Office issues and recent Office installation or activation issues.
- If several people in your organization are affected, ask an administrator to check Service health in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
- Record the exact error, when it began, the affected workflow, and whether it occurs on another device or with another file. This helps distinguish a broad update regression from a local or file-specific problem.
Microsoft’s issue listings and release notes change over time, so check the current entries rather than relying on an old build number or workaround.
Check for Office updates on Windows
Microsoft says Office is normally configured to update automatically. On a user-managed Windows installation, you can check manually from an Office app:

- Open an Office app, such as Word or Excel.
- Select File > Account. In Classic Outlook, the page may be labeled Office Account.
- Select Update Options > Update Now, if those controls are available.
- Allow the update process to finish, then reopen the app and check whether the issue remains.
If Update Options is missing, the installation may be volume licensed or controlled by Group Policy. On a work or school device, follow your administrator’s update instructions or contact the help desk; do not try to bypass the organization’s update controls. Microsoft also points users to Microsoft Update for installations where that is the appropriate route.

| Situation | Practical response |
|---|---|
| The issue is minor, a workaround is available, or Microsoft has not confirmed a regression | Stay on the supported update path, check Microsoft’s issue listings, and avoid an unverified rollback. |
| A verified issue blocks essential work, and Microsoft documents a workaround or correction | Follow the documented workaround or install the corrected update when available. On a managed device, coordinate with IT. |
| A severe, verified regression has no workable fix yet | Consider a temporary reversion only if your installation is Click-to-Run and Microsoft’s instructions apply. Record the version and set a plan to return to a current version once the problem is resolved. |
| The installation is managed by your organization or uses MSI | Use the organization’s deployment and support process. The Click-to-Run reversion instructions should not be assumed to apply. |
For a possible rollback, verify the installation type and read Microsoft’s instructions for reverting a Click-to-Run Office installation before changing versions. A rollback can remove the immediate regression, but it also removes improvements included in the newer release. Keep track of the issue and move back to a current version when Microsoft provides a fix or your organization approves one.
Use the release notes for your edition and channel
Build numbers are not universal: Microsoft lists releases by edition and update channel. Its Office security release notes cover Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise and business, Office 2019, Office LTSC 2021, Office 2021, Office LTSC 2024, and Office 2024. Use the entry for your own product, channel, and platform instead of copying a build number from another installation.

The release notes list a security release dated September 8, 2026, with version and build details by channel and edition. Microsoft also says Office 2019 support ended on October 14, 2025, though it may issue later updates at its discretion. Check Microsoft’s current lifecycle and release information for your edition rather than assuming an older product is still receiving routine support.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not bypass macro warnings to make a file open
Office blocks macros in files from the internet by default because VBA macros can be used to deliver malware or ransomware. A downloaded file may carry Mark of the Web information that Office uses to identify its origin; some files on network shares or intranets can also be affected if Office does not recognize their location as trusted.
Best Value
- Sleek and simple design that complements your Surface device.
- Dedicated Copilot[l] key for instant access to new experiences available on Windows 11.
- Convenient shortcut keys including Call mute, Snip & Sketch, Expressive input and Widget[2] for quick and easy access.
- Comfortable and responsive typing experience.
- Seamlessly pair to your device through wireless Bluetooth 4.0 connection with a range of up to 16 feet.
A “Security Risk” warning is not an update prompt to dismiss. Microsoft says you do not need to enable macros just to view or edit a Microsoft 365 file. Enable them only when you know what the macros do, trust the file and its source, and need the functionality. Be especially cautious with unexpected attachments or messages posing as invoices, receipts, or legal documents.
For a legitimate business-critical macro workflow, ask your organization’s IT team to verify the file and choose an approved approach. Microsoft recommends that organizations identify important macro files and work with business units or software vendors; signed code and trusted publishers may be part of that process. Removing Mark of the Web or adding broad trusted locations bypasses protections and should not be treated as a casual fix.
Leave ActiveX disabled unless a verified workflow requires it
Microsoft 365 and Office 2024 disable ActiveX controls by default. When controls are disabled, users cannot create new ActiveX objects or interact with existing ones. Microsoft warns against unexpected attachments and deceptive prompts that urge users to enable ActiveX, and recommends leaving controls disabled unless they are absolutely necessary.

If a known, legitimate legacy workflow depends on ActiveX, involve your IT administrator before changing the setting. The change affects Office applications broadly, not just the document currently open.
