To upload a local file in Puppeteer, find an input[type=file] and call uploadFile(path); to upload in Playwright, use a locator’s setInputFiles(path). When an application opens a file chooser dynamically, register a chooser waiter before clicking the control. Playwright also exposes page downloads through a Download object; Puppeteer’s current Files guide does not document a programmatic download-handling method.
Upload a file with Puppeteer
For a standard file input, wait for the element and call uploadFile with the file path. Puppeteer’s Files guide documents this pattern (version 25.12.0 at the time identified by the source): Puppeteer: Files.

If your script connects to remote Chrome, a local path may not identify a file available to the remote process; Puppeteer specifically warns that chooser acceptance from a local script connected to remote Chrome requires absolute paths. Confirm where the browser process can read the file rather than assuming local and remote paths are interchangeable.
When the page opens a chooser after a click
Start waiting for the chooser before triggering the click, then accept the path:

The chooser reference documents accept and cancel: FileChooser. The waiter does not return a chooser that was already open, so arm it before the action. Each chooser must be accepted or cancelled before another appears. Puppeteer does not intercept DOM APIs such as window.showOpenFilePicker.
Upload or clear a file with Playwright
For an input that is already part of the page, use a locator and setInputFiles. Locator operations are the preferred approach over ElementHandle-based operations in Playwright’s guidance. See Playwright: Upload files.

});Playwright resolves relative paths from the current working directory. Use a path that exists and is readable in the environment running the test.
When an input or chooser appears dynamically
If clicking a control triggers the file chooser, register the event wait first and then set the file on the returned chooser:

Handle downloads in Playwright
Playwright emits a download event when a page initiates a download, and provides a Download instance for basic file operations. The cited API documents the event and object; the exact download destination and file availability depend on your test setup. Puppeteer’s current Files guide does not describe an equivalent programmatic download-handling method, so do not assume the Playwright Download API applies to Puppeteer.
Troubleshoot local-file automation
- The upload control is not found: Check that the page has finished rendering the input and that the selector or accessible label matches it. If it is added only after an action, wait for the chooser event before performing that action.
- The chooser wait never resolves: Start waiting before clicking. Puppeteer’s waiter does not retrieve a chooser that is already open; Playwright’s event wait can likewise miss an event that fires before it is registered.
- The path works locally but not in CI or remote Chrome: Verify that the browser automation process—not just the test author’s machine—can read the file. For Puppeteer chooser acceptance when a local script connects to remote Chrome, use the absolute path available to the remote setup.
- The upload contains no file or fails to select the expected files: Confirm that the file exists, that the process has read access, and that the correct path or array was passed. For Playwright-generated content, provide the required filename, MIME type and buffer.
- A second Puppeteer chooser does not appear: Accept or cancel the active chooser before expecting another one.
- You are trying to automate a native picker API: Puppeteer’s documented chooser handling does not intercept
window.showOpenFilePicker; the chooser approach applies to the supported file-input flow.
