Move ZIP parsing, decompression, and other CPU-heavy archive work into a Web Worker so it does not monopolize the browser’s main thread. Send progress and results back as messages; update the page and announce status on the main thread. For large data, also manage memory deliberately: transfer an ArrayBuffer when the main thread no longer needs it, and use chunked processing if your ZIP library supports it.
Why large ZIP operations freeze a browser interface
JavaScript that runs synchronously on the main thread competes with the work needed to render the page and respond to clicks, typing, and scrolling. Parsing an archive, decompressing entries, or transforming large amounts of extracted data can therefore make an interface appear frozen while that work is underway. Moving the CPU-heavy work to a worker lets the main thread remain available for interface updates.
Put archive work in a Web Worker
A worker runs in a separate global context and cannot directly access or change the page’s DOM. Treat it as the place for archive computation, not interface rendering.
- In the worker: parse the ZIP, decompress the needed entries, and perform CPU-intensive transformations.
- On the main thread: receive progress and results, update the DOM, and provide accessible status announcements.
Use worker messages to communicate between the two contexts. Keep messages compact and report progress at useful intervals rather than posting an update for every small chunk; excessive messaging adds overhead without helping the user understand what is happening.

Pass large archive data without unnecessary copies
Ordinary worker messages serialize values, which can mean copying data. When you send a large ArrayBuffer that the main thread will not need afterward, transfer it using the postMessage transfer list. This moves the underlying memory resource rather than leaving a usable copy with the sender. After transfer, the sender’s buffer is detached, so do not try to read it again on the main thread.
Transfer ownership only when the worker can take over the buffer’s use. If the interface or another part of the application still needs to read that data, transferring it is not appropriate without first changing the ownership or data-flow design.

Use chunks when the ZIP implementation supports them
The Streams API provides a general way to process data in chunks, and it is available in workers. Chunking can help an application avoid materializing all input or output at once, but the API’s existence does not mean a particular ZIP library supports streaming extraction.
When choosing a ZIP implementation, check its own documentation for whether it can read selected entries and stream their output, or whether it loads whole archives or expanded entries into memory. Verify support for the archive features and compression methods your application needs, as well as malformed or encrypted archive behavior. Do not promise bounded memory use unless the actual library API and your implementation establish it.

Do not mistake Compression Streams for ZIP extraction
The browser’s Compression Streams API provides streaming transforms for gzip and deflate codecs. It is not a ZIP parser: a ZIP archive also has container metadata and entries that must be indexed and selected. Compression Streams alone does not parse ZIP central directories, choose entries, or extract a ZIP file. Use a ZIP-capable implementation for those archive tasks.
Handle failures and cancellation deliberately
Moving work to a worker protects the interface from the main-thread computation, but it does not make archive processing infallible or guarantee that expanded data fits available memory. Design the operation to account for:

- Malformed archives and decompression failures.
- Cancellation while parsing or extracting.
- Worker errors and unexpected worker termination.
- Expanded output that is unexpectedly large.
Report errors to the main thread so the interface can explain what failed and let the user recover. Avoid advertising a universal safe ZIP size limit: a fixed threshold is not established here, and practical limits depend on the browser, device, archive contents, and implementation.
