For large images in Puppeteer, first choose the smallest screenshot area you need, then wait for the page to reach the state your capture requires. A navigation or network-idle wait helps with timing, but does not prove that every image has finished loading and decoding. Use ElementHandle.screenshot() for one image or element, clip for a region, and fullPage: true only when you need the entire document.
Choose the right screenshot scope
A large image does not automatically require a full-page capture. Match the screenshot method to the visual result you need:

The screenshot API also exposes captureBeyondViewport. Consult the ScreenshotOptions reference for the exact options supported by your installed Puppeteer version.
Set the viewport before navigating
When the image’s displayed size depends on responsive layout, set the viewport before loading the page. A viewport that is too narrow or too wide can cause the site to choose a different layout or image size than the one you intend to capture.

Puppeteer notes that some sites do not expect phone-sized dimensions. Changing isMobile or hasTouch can also trigger a page reload. See Page.setViewport() and the screen configuration guide for configuration details.
Wait for the page, then check image readiness if needed
Navigation lifecycle waits and network-idle waits are useful timing signals, not image-readiness guarantees. Puppeteer’s screenshots guide shows waitUntil: 'networkidle2' as an example, and page.waitForNetworkIdle() can wait separately for network activity to quiet down. Its documented default idle period is 500 milliseconds. Neither condition establishes that all image elements have been decoded or are visually ready.

If a particular image must be ready, add application-specific checks for that page and image. The official material cited here does not specify a universal, guaranteed image-decoding recipe. Do not treat network quiet alone as proof.
Runnable example: capture a large image element
This Node.js example uses Puppeteer’s element screenshot method to save one image. Install Puppeteer in your project with npm install puppeteer, then save and run the script. Replace the URL and selector with those for your page.

})();The selector must match an element on the target page. If the image is inserted later by application code, waiting for the selector only establishes that the element exists; verify its actual visual readiness when the capture depends on it.
Capture a region or the full page instead
Use a clip when the image is not itself a convenient element target but its location and dimensions are known. Clip coordinates are page screenshot options; ensure the rectangle corresponds to the intended area.

});Full-page capture can produce a much taller output than the viewport. The Puppeteer documentation does not establish a universal maximum image size, memory budget, or performance penalty for these choices, so test with the pages and runtime conditions that matter to your application.
Choose an output format
Puppeteer screenshot output defaults to PNG. The quality option applies to formats other than PNG; setting it does not change PNG output. Select the type and options explicitly when they matter to your downstream workflow, and check the ScreenshotOptions reference for supported formats and constraints.

Large-image troubleshooting
- The screenshot shows an empty image area: a selector wait confirms the element exists, not that its image content is ready. Inspect the page-specific loading state and wait for the condition your application uses to indicate readiness.
- The capture is incomplete after network idle: network idle means network activity has been quiet for the configured period; it does not guarantee image decoding or visual completion. Add a page-specific readiness check.
- The captured image is the wrong size or layout: set the intended viewport before navigation, and confirm the site has not switched to a responsive layout you did not expect.
- The screenshot contains too much content: replace full-page capture with an element screenshot or a clip around the required region.
- The quality setting has no apparent effect: Puppeteer documents quality for non-PNG formats only; use a supported non-PNG output type if quality adjustment is required.
- The script exits before the capture completes or leaves browser processes behind: await screenshot operations and close the browser after the work. Puppeteer’s Page.screenshot() documentation describes screenshot lifecycle coordination, and its getting-started guide ends the workflow by closing the browser.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Reducing the capture area is a practical way to avoid producing an unnecessarily large output, but the cited Puppeteer documentation does not quantify memory or speed differences among viewport, clip, element, and full-page captures. Measure the dimensions and runtime behavior in your own environment rather than relying on an unsupported fixed limit.
For repeatable captures, keep the viewport and page state consistent, choose an appropriate navigation wait, and verify the specific image state when correctness matters. Puppeteer documents screenshot return values as bytes or base64 depending on the encoding option; screenshot operations also coordinate with page creation and closing within the same BrowserContext.
