When a game crashes or refuses to load a save, protect the original save before deleting, reinstalling, or attempting recovery. Then use reversible checks—restart, updates, service-status checks, file verification, and a clean test—to determine whether the installation, platform service, hardware configuration, or one save is responsible.

If a new game works but the existing save repeatedly fails, treat the old save as potentially corrupted and preserve it. A useful support ticket gives the publisher reproducible steps, exact error text, platform and account details, system diagnostics, and approved copies of logs or save files rather than only saying that the game does not work.

Protect your save before troubleshooting

Save data is often the only copy of hours of progress. Troubleshooting can make recovery impossible if it deletes, overwrites, or detaches that data from the correct user account. Make preservation the first step, not something you attempt after reinstalling.

Stop destructive actions temporarily

  • Do not delete the game, save files, user account, or local profile until you know where the save is stored and whether a backup exists.
  • Do not repeatedly overwrite a potentially damaged save by launching, saving, and quitting over it.
  • Do not initialize a console, clear storage, or use a recovery option that can remove data unless the platform documentation explicitly says the option preserves saves and you have checked the wording.
  • Do not send a password, payment information, or unrestricted account credentials to support.

Make a preservation copy where the platform allows it

Use the platform’s documented cloud, USB, external-storage, or manual-copy feature. The exact path depends on the console, account, game, and storage model. Label the copy with the game, user, platform, and date, and keep the original untouched. An external USB drive can be useful for platform-supported backup or game-data management, but it cannot repair an already corrupted save and is not universally compatible.

Record the state before changing anything

Write down the title and version, platform and storefront, user account, region, the last successful session, and the exact point at which loading or saving fails. Capture the error code, a screenshot, or a short video if the platform permits it. This baseline lets you compare every later test and gives support a way to understand what changed.

Use a reversible crash-triage sequence

Perform one change at a time and test after each step. Stop when the issue is resolved; unnecessary changes make the cause harder to identify.

  1. Reproduce once and document it. Note whether the crash occurs at launch, during a particular scene, when loading one save, while saving, or after a fixed amount of play. Record the exact message and frequency.
  2. Restart the game and the device. Fully exit the game rather than merely suspending it, then restart the console or computer. A clean process can remove a temporary lock or memory condition without touching saves.
  3. Install current system and game updates. On Windows, install current Windows updates. On a PC, update video, sound, motherboard, and processor drivers as appropriate. Use the platform’s normal update mechanism and restart when requested.
  4. Check the service and network status. Look for an outage affecting the platform, publisher, authentication, or the specific game. If online services are unavailable, repeated reinstalls will not fix an account or server-side failure. Test again when service is restored.
  5. Verify the installation files when supported. Use the storefront or launcher option that checks installed files. Verification can replace missing or altered program files without deleting saves; read the platform’s warning before confirming.
  6. Remove variables temporarily. Test without mods, overlays, unusual peripherals, extra monitors, or multi-GPU configurations. PlayStation’s PC guidance specifically calls out disabling SLI or extra monitors when relevant. Keep a record of what you disconnected so you can restore it later.
  7. Run a controlled save test. Start a new game or use a beginning save, as described below. This separates a title-wide crash from a failure tied to one save.
  8. Reinstall only after save protection. Reinstallation is a later step, not a first response. Confirm the save is backed up or otherwise preserved, then remove and redownload the game if earlier checks did not help.

Windows-specific checks

For a PC crash, include the Windows version, graphics card, processor, memory, driver versions, graphics settings, and whether the crash occurs with a clean launch. If the publisher requests it, generate a DxDiag report and attach it through the approved support upload path. Do not assume that a driver update alone proves a driver caused the crash; it is a controlled test whose result should be reported.

Console launch failures

For a PlayStation launch failure, the documented sequence includes restarting, restoring licenses, deleting and redownloading the game, installing system-software updates, and using Safe Mode cache or database recovery. Treat deletion and database recovery as later steps after protecting saves and checking for an outage. PlayStation also advises moving a game from USB extended storage to internal storage during troubleshooting; make that a test of the storage location, not a promise that it will repair a damaged save.

In-game crash reports

Some games expose a crash-report option after a failure. Use it when available and note the report time or confirmation number. An in-game report supplements, rather than replaces, a ticket containing reproduction steps and account information.

Determine whether the save or the whole game is broken

The most informative test changes only the save. A title that crashes with every save points toward installation, platform, service, hardware, or a broader game defect. A title that runs normally with a new save but fails consistently with one existing save makes that save the leading suspect.

Run the clean-save comparison

  1. Preserve the original save and close the game.
  2. Launch the title without opening the old save.
  3. Start a new game, or use the game’s beginning or test save option.
  4. Play long enough to reach the action that normally triggers the crash, if practical, and attempt a new save.
  5. Exit and reload the new save to test both writing and reading.
  6. Record whether the new save works, whether the old save still fails, and the exact point of failure for each.

PlayStation specifically recommends playing from the beginning without the existing save to check whether the save is corrupted. If the clean save works while the old one repeatedly crashes, keep the old file intact and report that comparison to the publisher. Do not delete the old file merely because the new game loads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test another title or application

If saving or reading fails, try another game or application. Nintendo recommends this comparison as part of its troubleshooting. If several titles fail in the same way, investigate the console, storage, account, or system software before treating one game’s save as the cause. If only one title and one save fail, include that narrow scope in the ticket.

Confirm the user account

On Nintendo systems, save data is tied to each user account and stored in console system memory. Verify that the game is using the account that created the save. Nintendo warns that deleting a user account also deletes all save data associated with that user and that the data cannot be recovered. Do not create, delete, or switch users experimentally until you have identified the original account.

Use symptoms to classify the failure

Observed result Most useful interpretation Next controlled test
The game crashes before its menu or on every save A title, installation, system, driver, hardware, or service problem is more likely than one save Check updates, status, files, drivers, peripherals, and another title
A new game loads and saves, but one old save always crashes The old save may be corrupted or contain data the current build cannot read Preserve the old file and send the clean-save comparison to the publisher
Several games cannot save or read data Storage, system software, account, or console-level trouble is more likely Try another application and platform-approved recovery that explicitly preserves saves
The problem appears only during an outage or login failure A service or authentication issue may be blocking normal operation Check the platform and publisher status, then retest after service returns

Recovery options differ by platform

There is no universal save-repair procedure. Cloud retention, external backup, account binding, recovery menus, and file access differ by platform and by game. Follow the current support page for the exact title and edition instead of applying instructions from another system.

PlayStation

  • Keep the original save before deleting or redownloading a game.
  • For launch failures, work through restart, license restoration, system updates, and status checks before reinstalling.
  • If the game is on USB extended storage, test it from internal storage as PlayStation recommends.
  • Use Safe Mode cache or database recovery only after reading the current warning and confirming that the selected operation preserves saves.
  • When a new game works but the old save does not, tell support exactly that; do not present the result as proof until the comparison has been repeated.

Nintendo systems

  • Confirm the selected user account before assuming that a save disappeared.
  • Remember that saves are stored in system memory and tied to the user; deleting that user deletes the associated saves and cannot be undone.
  • Try another game or application when reading or writing fails.
  • Use the platform’s recovery-mode restoration only when the current instructions state that save data is not deleted.
  • Check the game’s current support page for title-specific cloud or backup behavior; do not assume every game supports the same recovery path.

Windows PC

  • Preserve the save folder before reinstalling, changing launchers, or deleting configuration files.
  • Install current Windows, game, and hardware-driver updates, then restart.
  • Verify files through the relevant storefront or launcher.
  • Temporarily remove mods, overlays, extra monitors, SLI or other multi-GPU configurations, and unusual peripherals when relevant.
  • Keep a copy of crash logs and provide DxDiag only when the publisher requests it through an approved channel.

Build a support ticket that can be acted on

Support teams need a reproducible technical report, not a conclusion such as the game is broken. Put the scope and evidence at the top, then describe the steps in order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Include the identity and environment

  • Game title, edition, version or build, platform, storefront, and region.
  • Platform username or user ID requested by the publisher. Never include a password or authentication code.
  • For PC, Windows version, processor, graphics card, memory, driver versions, display setup, and in-game graphics settings.
  • Whether the issue affects one title, one account, one save, or multiple games and applications.

Describe the failure precisely

  • Exact error text and code, preserving capitalization and punctuation.
  • Date and local time of the latest occurrence and how often it happens.
  • Numbered reproduction steps that another person could follow.
  • What changed immediately beforehand: a game or system update, driver installation, mod, hardware change, suspend or resume, storage move, or account change.
  • What happened after each troubleshooting step, including steps that did nothing.

Attach evidence safely

PlayStation asks for error codes or messages, a detailed description with replication steps, and a screenshot or video when possible. Naughty Dog asks players to verify game files, update drivers, and collect crash data and save files before attaching them. KRAFTON’s checklist includes platform, username or user ID, DxDiag for PC, in-game graphics settings, reproduction steps, screenshots or video, and a copy of the save folder when applicable.

Compare the available troubleshooting paths

Path Reversible? Save-data risk Diagnostic evidence Best use
Restart, update, and service-status check Yes Low Error time and result First response to a transient or service-related failure
File verification Usually; read the launcher warning Normally low, but preserve saves first Verification result and changed files Missing or altered installation files
Clean-save comparison Yes when the old save is preserved Low if no deletion occurs New-save versus old-save behavior Isolating a potentially corrupted save
Another game or application Yes Low Whether the fault is title-specific Separating a game problem from system or storage trouble
Reinstall or move storage Partly; it changes installed data Medium unless saves are protected Before-and-after launch and load results Persistent installation or storage-location faults
Recovery-mode or database operation Depends on the selected option Potentially high Console model, menu option, and outcome Later-stage platform recovery that explicitly preserves saves

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Deleting the save to test whether it is corrupt

Deletion removes the comparison you need and may be irreversible. Preserve the file, test a new game, and provide both outcomes to support.

Reinstalling before checking service status

A platform or game-server outage can make a healthy installation appear broken. Check status early and record the time of the check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing many variables at once

Updating drivers, removing mods, moving storage, and reinstalling in one session may restore play but leaves no reliable explanation. Use one controlled change per test and write down the result.

Assuming a missing save belongs to the wrong account

On systems where saves are account-bound, verify the original user before creating or deleting profiles. On Nintendo systems, deleting the user deletes that user’s saves and cannot recover them.

Sending only a screenshot

A screenshot shows the symptom but not the trigger. Add the exact steps, frequency, version, platform, account identifier requested by support, and the result of each attempted fix.

Uploading sensitive files through an unapproved channel

Use the publisher’s support form or upload portal. Never email a password, post a save publicly, or share a full diagnostic report outside the channel support specifies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do after submitting the ticket

  1. Keep the original save, the ticket number, and a copy of every attachment.
  2. Do not make destructive changes while waiting unless support instructs you and you have a fresh backup.
  3. If the issue changes, reply in the same ticket with the new date, error, and exact step that changed the behavior.
  4. Answer requests for logs or save files through the same approved portal and state whether the file is a copy.
  5. If support proposes a recovery operation, ask which data it changes, whether it is reversible, and what backup is required before running it.

A practical decision path

Use this order when you are unsure what to do next:

  1. Can you still access the save? If yes, stop overwriting it and make a platform-supported copy. If no, confirm the original account and storage location before changing anything.
  2. Does the game fail before a save is selected? Prioritize updates, service status, file verification, drivers, peripherals, and another title.
  3. Does a new game load and save? If no, continue platform or installation triage. If yes, preserve the old save and report a likely save-specific failure.
  4. Do other titles or applications fail to save or read data? If yes, investigate system, storage, or account behavior and use only recovery options documented as save-preserving.
  5. Is the issue still reproducible? If yes, submit the complete ticket with logs and the clean-save comparison. If no, record which change resolved it and keep the backup until normal play is confirmed.

Bottom line for safe troubleshooting

Preserve the original save, test the least destructive explanation first, and change one variable at a time. A clean-save comparison and an alternate-game test reveal whether the fault follows one file or the wider platform. When you contact support, provide the exact build, account context, error, numbered reproduction steps, system details, and approved diagnostic attachments so the team can investigate without asking you to repeat avoidable work.
