Use exact arithmetic for CFA-franc prices, then handle cash settlement as a separate, jurisdiction-aware step. Configure the merchant’s country and monetary union—not just a generic “FCFA” label—and enable rounding only when a current local rule has been verified. The official materials cited here establish currency-zone, legal-tender, denomination and dated exchange-rate context; they do not establish one universal XOF or XAF cash-rounding increment or POS algorithm.
Configure the CFA-franc context before setting prices
“CFA franc” can refer to two monetary-union contexts. The BCEAO identifies eight UEMOA countries whose common CFA franc is issued by BCEAO, and six CEMAC countries whose CFA franc is issued by BEAC. Configure the merchant’s country and zone explicitly so currency handling, local rules and reporting do not depend on an ambiguous display label.
- UEMOA / BCEAO: Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo.
- CEMAC / BEAC: Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and Chad.

Calculate prices exactly, not with binary floating point
For whole-franc amounts, integer CFA-franc units are a straightforward representation. If configured unit prices, quantities or intermediate calculations can produce fractional francs, use an exact decimal or integer representation with an explicitly configured scale. Binary floating point can introduce representation errors that are unsuitable for money calculations.

Write down the calculation policy
Define the order and precision for quantity multiplication, discounts, tax bases and tax, and specify where and how any calculation rounding occurs. Apply the same written policy throughout the app and test its boundary cases and reversals. These are engineering practices, not a claim that a central bank prescribes a particular POS calculation algorithm.
Keep price calculation separate from payment settlement
First calculate the line items, discounts, tax and payable total under the merchant’s configured pricing policy. Then evaluate the payment method and the locally applicable settlement rule. If a verified rule permits or requires a tender-specific adjustment, apply it once to the final total, retain the original amount, and record the adjustment separately. Do not alter individual line items merely to make cash tender convenient.

The available official legal-tender material does not settle whether cash-only rounding applies in a particular country, what increment to use, whether it applies to invoices, refunds or business-to-business transactions, or how receipts must present it. Before enabling rounding, validate the current requirement with the competent national authority or local counsel for the deployment country.
BCEAO says the public must accept valid banknotes and coins with legal-tender and liberating power under applicable regulation. That statement is not itself a POS rounding specification. A familiar rule from Belgium—rounding a final euro cash total to five cents—or a rule for CFP francs is not authority for XOF or XAF. The Belgian FPS Economy FAQ is useful only as a warning not to copy another currency’s regime into a CFA-franc configuration.

Keep settlement auditable in the ledger and on receipts
Preserve enough transaction data to reconstruct what was priced, what was paid and why any difference exists. A practical record includes:
- Currency context, including the configured country and zone.
- Original calculated total and final settled amount.
- Payment or tender type, and any tendered amount and change or refund computation.
- Rounding adjustment, reason, and the identifier and version of the policy that produced it.
- For conversion transactions, the rate, source, date/time and quote context used.
Keep receipt fields consistent with the rules for the market; the cited sources do not establish a universal statutory CFA-franc receipt format. Refunds and reversals should reference the original transaction and policy, subject to local requirements, rather than silently recomputing it under a later setting.

Treat denominations as configurable operational data
BCEAO publishes information on FCFA banknotes and coins, which can inform denomination settings and cash-handling workflows. It does not establish that every denomination is equally available at every merchant or locality. Validate change-making and cash reconciliation in the merchant’s actual market instead of assuming universal availability.

If the POS converts amounts, store the rate and its context with the transaction; do not treat a reference quote as a timeless price or overwrite the rate after settlement. BCEAO’s exchange-rates page displayed the euro at 655.957 CFA francs per euro on 2 October 2026. That is a dated page value, not a rate to hard-code. BCEAO’s history page also states parity as 655.957 FCFA = 1 euro. A BEAC-hosted 2020 CEMAC regulation phrases the link as 1 CFA franc = 0.001524 euro; because the displayed decimal precision differs, verify current applicability and the required computational precision for the transaction rather than treating either expression as a universal implementation instruction. The regulation is available as a BEAC-hosted CEMAC foreign-exchange regulation.

Test the boundaries and the full transaction lifecycle
Once a local rule and calculation policy are configured, test the behaviors that can change the amount due or the audit trail:
- Values immediately below, at and above each approved rounding midpoint.
- Multiple quantities, discounts and tax interactions.
- Mixed tenders, cash refunds, voids and reversals.
- Currency conversions using a dated rate and quote context.
- Receipt, ledger, tender and change/refund reconciliation.
These are recommended test cases, not reported test results. BCEAO’s currency issuance and circulation page provides the legal-tender and circulation context, but does not supply a universal POS rounding rule.
