Grade a vintage video game in three separate passes: authenticate it, inventory what is present, and describe physical condition. A factory seal is not proof of mint condition, a high numeric score is not proof that every insert is present, and rarity does not repair a crushed box. Photograph the complete item before cleaning, shipping or encapsulation; record structural, surface and color defects; then choose storage or professional certification based on value, uncertainty and how you intend to use the game.
What a video game “grade” actually measures
Collectors often use “grade” as if it were one fact. For vintage software, it is a set of related judgments:
- Authenticity: Are the game, packaging, seal and components genuine for that release and region?
- Completeness: Does the copy contain the cartridge or disc, manual, inserts, tray, registration card, map, poster and accessories that originally belonged with it?
- Condition: How well have those genuine parts survived, including their structure, surfaces, color and smell?
- Presentation or certification: Has a grading company documented the item and enclosed it in a tamper-resistant holder?
These dimensions can point in different directions. An opened copy may be complete and structurally excellent. A sealed copy may have sun fading, crushed corners, tears, price stickers or a reseal. A scarce edition may command attention while still receiving a modest condition description. Keep the observations separate so a buyer, insurer or future owner can understand exactly what is being offered.
Use precise terminology: sealed, CIB and complete
Factory sealed
“Factory sealed” means the original manufacturer or publisher’s closure appears intact and consistent with that release. It does not mean “unopened and perfect.” A sealed box can be damaged or faded, and an apparently intact wrap can be a later reseal.

Resealed
A reseal is packaging applied after the original closure was opened. The replacement plastic may look convincing and can even be authentic-looking material. Treat seal authentication as its own investigation rather than inferring it from shine, tightness or a seller’s description.
CIB (complete in box)
CIB normally indicates that the expected game and packaging components are present, but the exact checklist depends on the platform, publisher, region and edition. State which pieces you found instead of relying on the acronym. For example, note the cartridge, manual, tray, registration card, map and poster individually.
Box-only and incomplete copies
A box without its original media, or a game missing expected inserts, can still be collectible. Describe it as box-only or incomplete and list every absent part. Never upgrade the condition description simply because the title is rare.

Make one worksheet and one photo set for each copy. This establishes a baseline before dusting, opening, shipping or sending it for encapsulation.
Identification fields
- Platform, publisher, title, region, edition and catalog or product code.
- Box construction: cardboard sleeve, plastic case, clamshell, big-box PC package or another format.
- Whether that release was normally factory sealed, if you can establish this from reliable examples.
- Seal status and observations, including any opened seam, replacement tape, glue or restoration.
Component inventory
- Cartridge or disc, including label, artwork, disc ring and obvious replacement signs.
- Manual, registration card, safety leaflet, warranty card and other paper inserts.
- Maps, posters, catalogs, trays, bags, foam, cables, adapters or other edition-specific accessories.
- Any replacement part, reproduction insert or non-original protective material.
Photographic coverage
Use neutral, diffuse light and keep the camera square to the surface when possible. Photograph the front, back, spine, top, bottom and all corners. Add close-ups of the seal, seams, folds, tears, stickers, writing, labels, disc surfaces, cartridge contacts and unusual marks. Include a scale only if it cannot touch or compress the packaging. Keep the original files and record the date.

Defect vocabulary
Describe what you can see rather than using vague words such as “near mint.” Record:
- Structural: crushed corners, dents, creases, bowing, seam splits, tears, detached flaps or collapsed trays.
- Surface: scuffs, scratches, abrasions, stains, sticker residue, tape, glue, writing and rubbed ink.
- Color: sun fading, uneven fading, yellowing, discoloration or mismatched replacement panels.
- Biological or odor: mold, mildew, active deterioration or persistent smoke and chemical smells.
- History: cleaning, opened seams, re-gluing, tape repair, replacement parts or other restoration work.
How to inspect a sealed game for a possible reseal
Authentication is comparison work. Plastic type, seam style and closure details vary by console and publisher, so there is no single visual test that proves every seal genuine.

- Map every seam. Photograph the top, bottom and side closures. Note where the film overlaps, where a seam is folded, and whether the pattern is centered or offset.
- Examine tension and folds. Look for consistent shrink tension, orderly folds and expected perforations. Loose film, irregular puckering, excess overlap or a reheated area deserves a qualification, not an automatic verdict.
- Check for reopening evidence. Look for cuts, lifted edges, adhesive, heat distortion, scuffed cardboard beneath a seam or a flap that appears to have been forced.
- Compare trusted examples. Use well-documented copies of the same release and region. Do not compare a different publisher, later revision or different market and assume the closure should match.
- Separate the conclusion. Record “appears consistent,” “uncertain” or “evidence of reseal,” and explain which observations led there. If the value warrants it, obtain professional authentication rather than claiming certainty from photographs alone.
Opened games can later be wrapped in authentic or non-authentic plastic. For that reason, “sealed” should be a finding supported by seam observations, not a synonym for high condition.
Evaluate the box, media and inserts independently
Paperboard and printed surfaces
Check whether corners retain their shape, whether folds are sharp or broken, and whether the spine remains attached. A small tear at a flap hinge can be more structurally significant than several light scuffs. Record front and back fading separately; a box displayed on a shelf may have one bright panel and one dark panel.
Cartridges and discs
Inspect labels for lifting, trimming, discoloration, writing and replacement. For discs, note scratches, ring cracks, delamination or a damaged hub. Keep media condition separate from the box description: a clean disc does not raise a torn box, and an excellent box does not make a damaged disc complete.

Manuals and loose paper
Look for missing pages, detached staples, tears, writing, stains, folds and clipped coupons. A manual can be original yet heavily worn. Record edition-specific inserts individually because a missing registration card or map may matter to completeness even when the box looks untouched.
Restoration and replacements
Disclose tape, glue, recoloring, replacement trays, reproduction manuals and swapped media. Conservation work may stabilize an item, but it changes its history and can affect how a grading service describes it.
How professional grading services differ
Professional services generally authenticate, assign condition grades and encapsulate the game, but their scales and labels are provider-specific. A number from one company is not automatically convertible to a number from another.

CGC’s published standards state that “CGC 10 is the highest grade assigned.” That statement describes its own scale, not a guarantee that every company’s 10 means the same thing. Provider pages are the authority for eligibility, cleaning policy, holder options and submission instructions at the time you send an item.
When professional certification is worth considering
- Uncertain authenticity: A valuable sealed copy with unusual seams or provenance may justify an independent authentication decision.
- High replacement cost: Fees, shipping and insurance are easier to justify when the item’s value materially exceeds those costs.
- A standardized record: Certification can document a condition snapshot for insurance, sale or long-term collection management.
- Protection from handling: Encapsulation limits casual contact and can provide a tamper-resistant display format.
Certification is less compelling for a common, low-value game; a heavily damaged box whose defects are already obvious; or a copy you intend to open and play regularly. Before submission, verify eligibility, declared-value limits, cleaning restrictions, turnaround, shipping insurance and holder dimensions. Photograph the item and packing process so its pre-shipment condition is documented.

Preserve vintage packaging with a stable environment
Paperboard, inks, adhesives and plastics age at different rates. The practical goal is to reduce light, moisture, heat, pressure and handling rather than to promise a fixed lifespan.
Light
Keep boxes and manuals away from direct sunlight and strong display lighting. Rotate displayed items instead of leaving one face exposed indefinitely, and use UV-filtering display materials when their specifications are known. Fading is cumulative; a dark room cannot reverse color already lost.
Moisture and temperature
Avoid damp rooms, condensation and rapid temperature swings. Do not store packaging against an exterior wall or near a radiator, vent, bathroom or basement leak risk. Stable, moderate household conditions are safer than an attic or garage that cycles between heat and cold.
Dust, pests and mold
Use a clean, enclosed cabinet or archival box and inspect periodically for insects, droppings, odor and new spotting. Isolate any moldy or actively deteriorating item before it contacts the rest of the collection. Do not brush visible mold into the air or return an affected item to a shared container without specialist advice.

Store a rigid box upright only when its structure can support that orientation without leaning. Use flat, fully supported storage for weak, bowed or large-format packages. Never stack heavy objects on a soft box, and never pull a package from a tightly packed row by its top flap.

Choose safe enclosures and display methods
- Use an inert, correctly sized sleeve, box or case that supports the package without bending it.
- Do not force a box into a holder that compresses corners, flaps or shrink-wrap.
- Keep plastics from pressing directly against printed surfaces for long periods, particularly when heat or humidity can build up.
- Provide padding that prevents impact while avoiding materials that shed, transfer dye or trap moisture.
- Leave enough clearance to remove the item without scraping a spine or catching a flap.
For framed or shelf displays, support the bottom and back rather than hanging weight from a fragile flap. Display hardware should not pinch the package, and vibration from speakers, doors or unstable shelving should be minimized.
Handle, clean and ship without adding damage
Handling
Wash and dry hands before handling clean paper surfaces; use clean nitrile gloves when they improve grip or protect against oils, but remove them if they reduce tactile control. Support weak corners and lift from the base, never by a top flap or shrink-wrap. Keep food, drinks, smoke and pets away from the work area.
Cleaning
Start with the least invasive action: remove loose dust with a soft, clean brush or air bulb held at a safe distance. Do not use water, solvent, adhesive remover, heat gun, hair dryer, tape or household cleaner on printed cardboard unless a conservator has specified the method. Rubbing can remove ink, flatten texture or spread a stain. Record any cleaning you perform, including materials and date.

- Photograph all sides and vulnerable corners immediately before packing.
- Wrap the enclosure or box in clean cushioning that cannot abrade the surface.
- Use a rigid inner carton with clearance on every side; prevent movement with non-abrasive padding.
- Place that carton inside a strong outer box, again immobilizing it without compressing the game.
- Mark orientation for your own packing discipline, but do not rely on carrier labels as a substitute for internal support.
- Insure and declare the value according to the carrier and grading service’s current rules, then retain tracking and packing photographs.
Extreme temperature, moisture, damaging environmental conditions, excessive light, motion, impact and vibration are all identified in CGC guarantee language as conditions that can affect collectibles or their holders. Treat that list as a shipping and display risk checklist rather than waiting for visible damage.
What the National Archives lifespan figure does—and does not—tell you
The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration wrote in 2016 that magnetic tapes stored under archival conditions generally have a lifespan of about 10 to 50 years before exhibiting difficult-to-handle decay. That estimate applies to magnetic tape, not directly to cardboard game boxes, manuals, cartridges or optical discs. It is useful as a reminder that media composition and storage conditions matter, but it cannot be transferred to packaging as a predicted service life.
A repeatable grading workflow
- Identify the exact release. Confirm platform, region, publisher, edition and product code.
- Photograph before intervention. Capture every face, edge, corner, seal and component in neutral light.
- Inventory completeness. List media, manual, inserts, trays and accessories one by one.
- Assess authenticity. Compare seal construction and components with trusted examples from the same release.
- Describe condition. Separate structural, surface, color, biological and restoration observations.
- Choose a preservation plan. Select supported storage, low-light display or professional encapsulation according to the item’s needs.
- Decide on submission. Compare current service rules, fees, declared value, insurance, turnaround and market recognition before shipping.
- Update the record. Add any cleaning, repair, move, sale, certification number or new defect with its date.
This workflow keeps a trustworthy condition history even when you decide not to purchase a numeric grade. It also prevents a desirable title or attractive seal from masking missing components and physical damage.
